GH’s Parry Shen Delivers the ‘Power Performance of the Week’

Photo: Mariana Tosca

How many of us have lost, or had to say goodbye to our best friend? Somehow fate or illness intervenes and cuts short someone you share so many memories with.

On last Thursday’s episode of General Hospital, Dr. Britt Westbourne’s (Kelly Thiebaud) family and friends gathered for her memorial at the GH chapel.  However, viewers knew of the special connection between Britt and her bestie, Brad Cooper (Parry Shen).

Photo: ABC

Devastated at losing Britt, upset that she never told him she about her diagnosis with Huntington’s Disease, and mourning her death, Brad comes to her former office, where Britt was the Co-Chief of Staff at the hospital. After exchanging heartfelt moments with Britt’s mother, the grieving Liesl (Kathleen Gati), and Scott Baldwin (Kin Shriner), Brad (with a paper bag in hand) spends some time alone in Britt’s former office, which has now been cleaned out.

Next, Brad takes out a carton of ice cream (for those who know the back-story, Britt and Brad would sit together each with ice cream and watch the red carpet at the Nurses’ Ball on TV and hoot and howl at the residents of Port Charles), and thus begins a very emotional and five-hankie moment, where Brad recalls all the key moments in their friendship.

Parry Shen was so touching in this scene, that if you have been a fans of Britt and Brad’s friendship, we are sure you shed some tears.

Later, during the memorial, Brad is pained listening to the others eulogize Britt, and when it is his turn to speak, he does his best to get through it and pay homage to his best friend.

We will miss the Brad and Britt friendship as will many GH viewers for it was one-of-a-kind on the soaps – two originally, not so nice people, doing bad things and finding common ground with each other, and eventually turning their lives around and being there to support each other.

For all of these scenes mentioned above, Michael Fairman TV names Parry Shen’s work, the Power Performance of the Week.  You can check out a clip featuring Shen below.

Now, let us know, what did you think of Parry’s Performance during Britt’s memorial episode? Comment below.

It would have been nice to have Lucas pay a visit. Sadly, Brad will now disappear like all the other LGBTQ characters on the show!

Why? He’s part of the WU family and will hopefully be pulled into that business.

I love Brad, Soaphound—-I’m with you—let’s hope he does get pulled into his aunt’s “business”, as dark as it is.—His performance was so real. I cried!!
Aside—Sterling Robinson called his daughter a blushing bride, yeah, Right—she’s so virginal, she’s not sure of her own daughter’s paternity. Between her and Trina I don’t know whom I dislike less or more. I cannot warm up to either.
But, I love aunt Selina —-go figure!!‍♀️

Oops—Sorry, Stephanie—-I’m so used to corresponding with Soaphound, my hand automatically typed her pseudonym LOL

He was phenomenal! I really hope they find something else for him to do now that Britt’s gone. He still has work for his aunt and an ex-husband hiding out somewhere in the hospital. There’s plenty of history to play out and plenty of potential for Perry and Brad.

Well deserved! And yet he is so under used. I hope we see more of Brad than we currently do.

I read that he is also married with two children… best straight man playing a gay man role ever !

I also like the other black male nurse, very friendly with Opiphany. Can’t remember his name but also liked him at the Nurses Ball too.

I’ve always liked Brad, even when he was the ultimate bad boy; I know many don’t. I hope Britt’s bequest helps him become his own man…and perhaps find one of his own as well. Parry Shen is really sexy, that impish smile snd gorgeous hair. I hope he stays front and center for a while.

Parry’s performance was compelling. I wanted to jump into the television and hug him and tell him that life will get better and Britt will forever be in his heart. If ever there was any doubt about Parry’s ability as an actor that scene says it all. Great job Parry. I can’t wait to see what comes next.

It’s time to give Brad a new love interest. My “fan-fic” ties him into another big storyline. What if Taggert knew all along that Trina wasn’t his bio-daughter? That he (and maybe Portia) were hiding something else – that Taggert was gay? With a strict traditional raising as a cop, Marcus never felt safe coming out. Have him connect with Brad. It actually gives Taggert and Brad something to do and is a twist on the tired “who’s the daddy” storyline. Taggert would clash with Selina’s influence over Brad.

Just wishful thinking.

Wondering if Zeke, Portia’s brother, will be Brad’s new love at The Savoy.

I was thinking the same thing when Zeke appeared followed by Brad showing up to give Curtis Selina’s gift. Then Brad didn’t stay so maybe not.

I cried watching Perry/Brad’s heart wrenching performance at Britt’s memorial. I cried again just now watching the recap video. I’ve always liked poor, misunderstood Brad and I’m a HUGE fan of Perry’s. I hope that GH gives him a center storyline… His scenes are all too wonderful!

I completely agree that Parry Shen’s performance at Britt’s memorial was the Power Performance of the week. He had me in tears when Brad brought ice cream into Britt’s office & “spoke” to her & the scene at Britt’s memorial, as well as earlier scenes when Brad is facing Britt’s death, were both touching & heartbreaking. Honestly, I wasn’t a Brad fan for a long time. But Perry won me over as I read about him in Soap Opera Digest & began following him on Facebook. Besides being a wonderful actor, he is a charming & witty writer, a devoted… Read more »

Thank you for featuring Parry Shen with these powerful scenes. His character is underused and overloved, that is, if any of us can ever be “overloved….” That being said, Love to all!

GH EP Frank Valentini On Taping the Sonya Eddy Tribute Episode: “It Was an Extraordinary Script, and It Was a Labor of Love That Day”

This week on General Hospital, the ABC daytime dramas series kicks off its 60th anniversary set of episodes, with what is sure to be the most emotional – the tribute episode for the late Sonya Eddy in honor of her beloved GH character, Epiphany Johnson.

GH’s executive producer spoke with Soap Opera Digest (in their latest issue on newsstands now), about how the show decided to handle the delicate subject of a real-life cast member’s passing and connect it to the story on the canvas of the soap opera.

In conjunction with GH co-head writers, Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor, the trio decided that if they weren’t ever going to be able to see Sonya as Epiphany again, that there was no way they were going to ever recast the role.  Valentini shared: “We decided it was important to honor not only Sonya, but Epiphany and we wanted to dedicate a full entire episode all about that.”

The EP went on to give praise to his writers, and the cast for their performances when taping the episode: “I think everyone was touched by what the writer’s wrote. It was an extraordinary script and it was a labor of love that day in honor of Sonya, who was so incredibly loved by everybody in the cast and  crew.

The way the death of Epiphany is structured on the airshows is key also to the upcoming Nurses’ Ball episodes set to air the following week. Frank expressed: “Epiphany is a very pivotal person in the Nurses’ Ball, so it’s almost like a part two (of her tribute).

The Sonya Eddy tribute episode airs Wednesday March 29th.
