Mark Consuelos Exits ‘Riverdale’

Photo: JPI

Last night, All My Children alum, Mark Consuelos (Ex-Mateo Santos) made what appears to be his final appearance for now on CW’s soapy drama, Riverdale.

Consuelos departed Riverdale as a series regular on the season 5 finale, after coming on to the show in its second season in the role of villain, Hiram Lodge.

Riverdale executive producer and showrunner, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, shared with Deadline a statement on Consuelos contribution and run on the series: “From the moment Mark joined us, he was up for literally anything, a hundred percent committed to making Archie’s life a living hell. And what’s funny is, Mark couldn’t be more different from Hiram. A classy pro and the sweetest guy, always looking out for everyone. We wish Mark the best and hope this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Hiram Lodge.

Consuelos offered up these sentiments in a statement on his Riverdale exit: “First and foremost, I would like to thank Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa for this incredible opportunity. Never before has playing a character that was so bad, felt so good. Huge thanks to the Riverdale fandom, to the brilliant crew and amazing cast, whom I consider dear friends and family.”

So, will you miss seeing Mark on Riverdale? Elsewhere, still no word on the “Pine Valley” reboot in which Mark and wife, Kelly Ripa, are two of the executive producers of that many All My Children fans were hoping would come to fruition. Share your thoughts via the comment section below.

Hiram isn’t really necessary for Riverdale to go on. The character was basically stuck in a repeat loop of cartoon villainy anyway.

The one thing Riverdale needs to do is… LOSE the damn musical episodes!! They’re not good… and the one last week was especially awful.

Satan, glad to read your commentary here. We are totally in agreement. I have tried to stick with the show since its promising beginnings. But it quickly devolved into one ludicrous plot after another, detouring swiftly away from any semblance of the Archie comics. I tune in very sporadically now.

So glad you brought up the musical episodes. Who is writing this show anyway? A frustrated Broadway star wannabe? Betty has become so vicious and unlikable. Sadly, they are allowing the very public split between Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart to permeate the writing and direction. And they continue to prop up KJ Apa’s Archie by having the character constantly saving lives and the town (usually shirtless), even though the Jughead character is more nuanced and sympathetic, and Sprouse is the best (and most popular) actor of the bunch.

I think they just got “lost” this season. “OK, let’s graduate all the kids from high school, and then jump forward in time about 7 years….” and then WHAT, exactly??

Why was the time jump a good idea?? Who knows, maybe Luke Perry gave them some advice (before his sudden death) about having a show based on high school kids who are actually LONG past high school age… a subject Luke would have known a little something about. I think some of his 90210 cast mates were pushing 40 by the time that show ended!

The whole “Betty vs this year’s serial killer” thing has become as tedious as Veronica’s battles with daddy. At least the latter appears to be over. Though Betty & Jughead… seems like they’re going another direction for now. Had no idea the actors were together off screen, let alone that they split up (don’t follow celebrity gossip much down here in Hell) but that might explain the change in writing there. Not sure why they also split up Veronica & Archie, after finally getting rid of the obstacle of Veronica’s so-called “marriage”. And then they put her with Reggie, for Hell’s sake?? Hell, even in the old Archie comic books, that pairing never worked!

And Cheryl’s maple syrup religious cult…. don’t even get a Devil started on that lunacy! I guess if her cult goes all “Jim Jones” and drinks Kool Aid with maple syrup in it, the worst that can happen is that they all pass out from diabetic comas??

Satan, just a quick reply here to say I agree with your further analysis. Some (most?) of these writing decisions don’t make much sense, believable plotlines or not. Also, with regard to the cult drinking “Kool Aid with maple syrup” leading to “diabetic comas,” I think that is also what happens to the viewers while watching one of theses musical episodes, although vomiting may help…

My sense is that he is leaving a sinking ship.

Nope.

GH should hire him to play an evil Cassidine. He would be perfect!

Please bring back all my children!!!! We miss it so much!!!

I predict he’ll take over Ryan Seaquest spot on LIVE….Ryan is on work overload & needs to drop something. Just sayin.

I hope so Donna, since I’ve been on “Seacrest Overload” since the start of AMERICAN IDOL. Just don’t get the appeal.

Ryan is young, he can handle the load! He knew what he was up against when he started doing LIVE. He was not there this week because they were taping American Idol

I will miss seeing Mark. I hope he gets another TV role.

The Pine Valley reboot has about as much chance as the proverbial “snowball in hell.” Most potential new shows never make it out of the development stage, and scarce fewer make it to the pilot stage. Don’t get your hopes up.

Personally, I was hoping he would concentrate on bringing PINE VALLEY to fruition. It sounded so definite last Christmas, as if it were happening very soon. It’s been almost a year since the initial announcement was made. The actors involved have all said “oh yes, it’s a real deal, it’s happening!” but I have seen or heard little since. If they don’t get the ball rolling soon, the viewers and the actors will be too old to care – ABC really needed to be more proactive after their long battle to regain character rights (from Prospect Park) – I don’t mind waiting but it’s getting kind of ridiculous. If the project really isn’t moving forward, can’t they just state that?

Malachy McCourt, ‘Ryan’s Hope’ and ‘All My Children’ Actor, Dead at 92

If you watched Ryan’s Hope through its 14-year-run, you know that Kevin the bartender became a beloved “member’ of the Ryan clan on the defunct ABC daytime drama series. The character of Kevin MacGuiness became so loved by the fans because of the actor who portrayed him, Malachy McCourt.

Sadly, according to his wife Diana McCourt to The New York Times, Malachy passed away on Monday from a heart condition and battling cancer. The actor was 92-years-old.

Playing Kevin on Ryan’s Hope was not much of a stretch for McCourt, because in his lifetime, he was the owner of 1950s Irish pub Malachy’s on Third Avenue in Manhattan. Known as one of the city’s great story-tellers, patrons from longshoremen to the actor Richard Harris would stop in and talk all things Irish with . On Ryan’s Hope, Kevin was best friends to “Ryan’s Bar” owner, Johnny Ryan (Bernie Barrow) and he tried to keep Delia (Ilene Kristen) on the straight and narrow.

In his soap opera career, McCourt also was widely-known for his role of Father Clarence McCourt on All My Children especially come Christmastime. Was Clarence, actually St. Nick? That was always the proverbial question. McCourt also appeared on the New York soaps: One Life To Live, Search For Tomorrow and Another World. Other roles included: Devil’s Own, Brewster’s Millions, The Molly Maguires, and Starman, to name

Later in 2006, Malachy ran for governor of the state of New York as a Green Party candidate. He tackled social issues of the time including being an advocate for gay and lesbian groups to march in the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

McCourt’s childhood was recounted within his brother Frank McCourt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela’s Ashes, which detailed their mother’s attempt to raise the four of their surviving seven children in poverty in Limerick, Ireland. Later, Malachy wrote his own memoirs: 1998’s Monk Swimming, and 2000’s Singing My Him Song.

Malachy is survived by his aforementioned wife, Diana, daughter Siobhan McCourt; sons Malachy Jr., Conor and Cormac; stepdaughter Nina Galin; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
