Nathan Fillion Talks His Start On OLTL On ‘The View’ With Whoopi Goldberg

Courtesy/ABC

On Thursday’s episode of ABC’s The View, Nathan Fillion visited the show promoting his series, The Rookie.  But during the beginning of his conversation with Whoopi Goldberg, he talked about what he learned from his humble beginnings in show business as Joey Buchanan on the beloved One Life to Live.

Of course, OLTL fans recall that Nathan was involved in a romantic storyline with Llanview icon, Robin Strasser (Dorian) and played the on-screen son to another icon, Erika Slezak (Viki).

Fillion shared about this time on One Life: “Everything I did and everything I do I learned on that show.  I never speak poorly on daytime … it was such a warm kind place to be.   I learned everything there.  I don’t know where an actor can go and work with people that have worked in the business for 25, 35, 40 years, and I had no idea what i’m doing …and they said, ‘no problem here is what you do’.  So, it was very good people.”

Goldberg also alluded to that she “missed the soaps” meaning All My Children and One Life to Live that shot right where they are in New York City at the ABC studios on 66th and 67th street.

Watch Nathan talk his early career and more with the ladies of The View below.  Then, let us know what you think about the sentiments he share from his time at One Life to Live via the comment section.

I loved that storyline with Joey and Dorian together. One of my faves. Not just on OLTL.

We miss New York soaps too…but thats a bygone era and doubt they will come back…All My Children was far too gone when it ended…OLTL was good and ratings up when it ended…Prospect Park showed promise but like the Variety Show daytime soaps are a thing of the past-hold on to the last four as long as you can…hopefully prime time can revive them one day again…Peyton Place return would be nice…i can see Chloe Lanier as Allison Mckensie!!!///Knots Landing i miss too!!!

Joy made a mistake. She said “there are a couple of soaps left on other networks.” I guess she forgot General Hospital.

so here’s what I got out of Nathan Fillion interview today on the view, whoopi claimed to miss the soaps, she didn’t specify which one and I guess doesn’t realize theres still 4 on network tv. Then Joy added to whoopi comment by saying theres still some “on other networks”. hello! maybe someone should let these two know that GH is on abc its the networks longest running show, now joy doesn’t come across as a soap fan but whoopi made herself sound real fake by saying plural I miss the soaps especially when 4 are still on the air,… Read more »

Yeah, aria, I agree those remarks weren’t really thought out. Whoopi probably meant she misses the “golden era of soaps” as many of us do. But Joy seemed a bit dismissive, as if soaps are still there for the fools who can find them. I’d like to see her try and memorize umpteen pages of dialogue every day to do ONE TAKE on most scenes, working often in little corners of a studio posing as big rooms. Hats off to soap actors: the BEST IN THE BUSINESS. I’d like to see Ryan Gosling or some spoiled starlet pull it off.… Read more »

Lol let’s face it folk’s, The Rookies got Nathan, it doesn’t need to be promoted on The View. Nathan was there to bump ratings for The View. Good to see folks are noticing how mediocre and ignorant Joy and Whoopie are…finally!

I wish ABC would try to re-boot OLTL. There are enough actors from the show ( I would think ) that could be on the show to get it going again….

Kudos to Nathan for speaking so highly of his daytime roots. He is so right. The New York soaps were such a fertile training ground for young actors.

I loved Nathan as Joey. He and Robin Strasser were great together. He is truly a very talented man to have worked so well with such seasoned icons as Robin and Erika Slezak.

I always admire an actor who has made in in prime time or films and still talks with such fondness about their daytime roots. They are a truly classy breed. Nathan Fillion is one class act.

Maybe Whoopie meant that she missed the soaps as you would miss someone, or missed them, as not seeing them? Never the less, it was her loss. Nothing lasts forever, and we still have four left that I enjoy. I am glad M.F appreciates what he learned from them, as countless others have. Some people have always looked down their noses at the soaps and I’ve had friends and family over the years ask me if I’m still watching that stuff, to put it nicely. Just hope they last as long as I do.

I watched Nathan on The View. Nice to see him. Surprised they didn’t bring up “Castle” that featured other soap actors throughout the years making cameos on episodes. And besides OLTL, there were also my other favourites he was in…”Firefly”and as the not so friendly Preacher in “Buffy.”

Julianne Hough Replaces Tyra Banks as New Co-Host of ‘Dancing with the Stars’

After Tyra Banks revealed she was stepping away from Dancing with the Stars, a new co-host needed to be named and it looks like the reality-ballroom dance competition series has found their gal.

Julianne Hough, will rejoin the series, but this time as the new co-host alongside Alfonso Ribeiro.  Hough has previously appeared on the dance series as both a pro dancer and a judge.

With Julianne returning to the ballroom, she will be reunited with her brother, Derek Hough, who will be back at the judges table for the show’s upcoming 32nd season streaming on Disney+.

The new co-host has twice won the mirrorball trophy with celebrity partners, Apolo Ohno and Hélio Castroneves, during Dancing with the Stars fourth and fifth seasons on ABC.

As for Tyra Banks, last week, she told TMZ that she felt that it was time for her to exit DWTS and focus on her business and entrepreneurship, and that she would also be producing more TV but behind the scenes.
