The Bold and the Beautiful's Scott Turner Schofield Chats On The Story Of Maya Avant, Transgender Advocacy & Caitlyn Jenner!

Courtesy/CBS
Scott Turner Schofield has already made daytime and broadcast television history. Back in May, when he debuted on The Bold and the Beautiful in the role of Nick, Maya’s (Karla Mosley) friend and mentor, Schofield became the first transgender actor to play a major, or recurring role on a daytime drama series.
As an expert, diversity speaker, and author for the transgender community, Scott brings an important and critical realism to the story of Maya Avant and B&B’s mission to tell great story while shedding light on the transgender community, which is ultimately at its epicenter a compassionate love tale between Maya and the man in her life, Rick Forrester (Jacob Young) filled with internal struggles, and public opinion. For Schofield, who has quite the theatrical resume, he has seized this opportunity to embrace the soap world and help spread the message of acceptance, and to raise awareness for the often struggles of this long under-represented part of our population in the media.
On-Air On-Soaps caught up with Scott to ask him about: his first foray into the soaps, working alongside the likes Mosley and Thorsten Kaye (Ridge), what he thought of Caitlyn Jenner’s Vanity Fair debut to the world, and how we now can open up a dialog for a clearer understanding of the transgender community.
Did you watch yourself back on your first episodes of The Bold and the Beautiful? What did you think?

Courtesy/CBS
SCOTT: It is totally weird and strange to look at yourself, but I did this pep talk that is all over the internet, too … and that is even weird. There is this disconnect. Only I wonder, if it’s especially much because I am transgender, and to see myself. There is just this huge mind/body disconnect. So when my first episode of B&B aired, my mom and I were traveling together. We were in the Hampton Inn lobby in Virginia, and it was 1:30 in the afternoon and we had to check out. So we asked them to turn on the TV … and my mom started crying!
What have you thought of the scripts, and how B&B has handled the telling of Maya’s journey and spotlighting the issues that face the transgender community?
SCOTT: I mean this, and I am not saying this just because I want to keep my job, but I am an expert on transgender issues … not only an expert, but also as someone who wants to uplift and honor the transgender community, and that is who I am already. I would not have taken this role if I thought that was not going to happen. When Brad Bell (executive producer and head writer, B&B) came in to tell me to let him know if there was anything wrong with the scripts, and to give an actor that power, that just doesn’t happen or exist! What is so upsetting to me is that people don’t watch daytime like they do everything else. It’s OK, because B&B has 30 million viewers worldwide, but I am saying in the United States if we were doing this on Netflix, if we were doing this on primetime, people would be losing their minds. So if they are not watching, they should! If they would set their DVR’s, their minds would be blowing right now!

There you were in one of your first scenes with none other than Thorsten Kaye (Ridge)! And when Nick came into speak with Ridge; the two had quite the conversation. How was working with Thorsten? Were you at all intimated?
SCOTT: He is so wonderful. Everybody in the cast and crew has been amazing, and everyone there is excited for what is happening on the show, and that I am there to help them bring that. Thorsten and I had this very intense scene, and me as an actor going up against Thorsten Kaye, I am sitting there going, “Wow! We are not in a theatre, or off-off Broadway anymore, kid.” He was so kind, and he saw me, and he knew it was my first soap opera in a scene against, or with, this leading man. I am the guy who is supposed to show up as a man who is a transgender, and so there was all kinds of a stuff going on between us. Thorsten offered me a word of advice, which was, “Look at the side of my face. That will open up your face for the cameras.” He would be like, “Open the door this way,” and would even have the crew do another take with me. He helped make me look good, and if that is not an ally, then I don’t know what is.
Was there a long audition process you had to go through to land the part of Nick?
SCOTT: I am sure it was for them (B&B), because the two times I went into read for the part there was an array of people of all types, looks, levels, and they really didn’t know what they were ultimately going for, but they liked me.
How has it been working with Karla Mosley (Maya)?

Courtesy/GLAAD.org
SCOTT: I love Karla. We have a friend in common, and we have the theatre world in common, and so when we figured that out in hair and make-up the first day. Karla just became my friend, and then when we were at the GLAAD Media Awards together in New York City, and met Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black), and I almost fainted. She is a godsend! She is an incredible being, and I just wanted to thank her for all she has done. When I met her I kind of lost faculties in my speech. I was so mad at myself, and there were no cameras around recording what happened, or any documentation of this ever happening. So Karla took me by the wrist and turned me around, and there was Laverne! And Karla said, “Laverne, so nice to see you again. Could we take some photographs?” I went, “Oh! Karla Mosley is a big star! I forgot!” (Laughs)
Recently, Karla was put through her paces on Janet Mock’s MSNBC talk show So Popular. One of the pointed questions Mock posed to Karla was: did the actress ever think why B&B didn’t just hire a transgender actress to take on this key role instead of her? What are your thoughts on that line of questioning?

Courtesy/Twitter
SCOTT: It is a question, of course. And here is what I loved from the Janet Mock perspective, and from her book “Redefining Realness”. Janet Mock left Hawaii after having all of her work done, and so she left Hawaii as a woman … the woman that she was always meant to be, the woman that she is today. She moved to New York. She did not tell people she was transgender – she didn’t tell people she lived with, she didn’t tell men that she was with romantically – she didn’t tell anyone for quite a few years. Then she met the man of her dreams, which is now her fiancée, and this is in the book. She realizes she has to disclose everything, because that is what a relationship is built upon that is a deeply intimate relationship – this kind of information. So then we go through all of her life in her book. But the deal is: Karla Mosley/Maya Avant is a woman, just like all women, which is exactly the point of Janet Mock’s book “Redefining Realness”. Janet has always been this real woman, and she has to disclose this one fact about her medical history. Our culture thinks being transgender is “such a huge deal”. I have been out as transgender for ten years now.
I am sure, as others have, you must have suffered emotionally trying to be accepted as your authentic self.

SCOTT: Of course, but I only suffered because people who weren’t transgender wouldn’t accept me as transgender. I knew this the whole time, right? I have been a man physically, legally for ten years, and now I am just a man in every day life. Sure people think I am a gay guy, which is totally fine with me. But I am a real man in every sense of the word. Just like Maya Avant is in this story on The Bold and the Beautiful, a real woman. When I meet someone that I want to have that level of intimacy with I will share that with them on my timetable when I feel I am ready, and that’s exactly what the character of Maya has done. So, I think the way they wrote the story is terrific for people who blend, and no one ever asks the question … ‘were you ever something else before?’
With all the headlines made by Caitlyn Jenner – while so many are wildly supportive and admire her – still others have voiced mixed feelings on this. Caitlyn has a lot of money, and could afford surgeries that many in the transgender community couldn’t even dream of being able to finance. Many in the community have faced abuse, and have to scramble by any means necessary to go through a transition. What are your thoughts on the message that Caitlyn Jenner is sending out to the world?
SCOTT: One thing that we do in the transgender community is that we tear each other down, and it’s hard enough out there. Here is the thing about Caitlyn Jenner: there was a study done and 8% percent of people said that they knew a transgender person. Everybody now knows a transgender person, and you can’t say you don’t – unless you have literally been living under a rock – and that is really valuable. Now that people know a transgender person, hopefully they have some questions, and they will be kind and human enough to have a conversation. And, in those conversations they will find out that we are two to three times more likely to be unemployed, and therefore we are broke as a general rule, not like Caitlyn. That we have a one in twelve chance of being murdered, and that forty percent of us attempt suicide. Now some serious talks will come if anyone cares enough to ask. I do think now someone will care enough to ask, or at least be a little bit prepared, because they all know at least a name they can say.

What did you think of Caitlyn’s Vanity Fair cover? It was quite the well-thought out and executed publicity plan, too.
SCOTT: I thought it was a beautiful photograph and the Marilyn Monroe synchronicity is great. I think a lot people have mixed feeling on this, and perhaps even Caitlyn does, too. But you do the one thing that you can, and the fact that an American hero became Marilyn Monroe in her own way, I mean … that is so great!
Do you think fans of B&B can expect Nick to be in the mix more, and more as Maya’s story continues to be told?
SCOTT: Here’s what I can tell you: it was built as a four-episode arc, and my sixth episode recently aired. So I am a recurring character, and that is all I know. I hope I will be recurring for a while. I love it over at The Bold and the Beautiful and to be my whole self at work, and to be so respected, and so supported. This is what we are going for in transgender advocacy: for people to go to work, be their whole selves, and be supported. I get to that every day I am on set there. So yes, I want to go back there all the time.
What do you think about what Scott shared about his experience & the transgender community? Do you hope Nick continues to be a vital part of The Bold and the Beautiful canvas as the CBS Daytime drama series continues to tell the story of Maya Avant? Share your thoughts below!
You can change ones appearance on the outside but what about the inside…doesnt Caitlin still have a prostate?…i dont think when one changes sex you become 100% that sex…your insides remain what you are born with…just curious
I wonder the same thing. I’ve read articles that state most people that sex change operations are no happier now than before their surgeries. And I remember seeing a transgender male to female interviewed on TV and she said she wish she had never done it, also said she couldn’t ever have an orgasm after the change.
Yes. Just inverted and nipped and tucked but the parts are still the same. Everything that made Bruce a man is still there in some form.
I really like that the character of Nick came on as this huge wealth of knowledge and was a part of Maya’s journey when it was time to disclose to Rick but I do want to see B&B keep This character on the show Scott has more than proved he has a great acting ability so I want to see this character in a storyline purely his own in a romance or maybe something about his past whatever but just beyond being Maya’s friend on the show.
I love that brought in a transgender person, because there are so many young people out here killing them self cause they families don’t accept them love is love, also I’m a gay man in a loving relationship appreciates how really this subject and we as people can teach and let the next generation know it’s ok to be different cause god loves you for who u are
God is with a capital “G” and your right God loves us all. He loves murderers, rapist as well because we are all His creation but He may not like the life style we chose. God loves all His creation animals as well but that does not mean I want Noah’s ark in my backyard.
I’m already sick of this story. For the past few mts. we’ve had Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner shoved down our throat’s . Transgender has been around forever why is it being treated like something new? Can we please get on with it.
when they shoved the gay community down us housewives throats and gave us no choice in the matter we quit watching our fav soaps and I see there all saying R I P on the board my friends and I have no problem with gays but most of us women are bible believing women and we refuse to have these matters forced on us so as of today when it was confirmed that Maya was coming back we officially quit watching B&B it hurts us to do this because we have all watched it since the beginning but we will not be forced to accept nothing
ENOUGH with the transgender stuff. More Ridge & Caroline. Leave the transgender to Bruce/Caitlyn
MICHAEL FAIRMAN & SCOTT TURNER SCHOFIELD — GREAT INTERVIEW!!
Wow, people! Where’s your compassion, humanity? You quit watching B&B because Maya revealed she was transgender?? I love this storyline, and I love Rick & Maya’s love story. There’s nothing sick about it. Maya IS a WOMAN, in EVERY way. She’s NOT a homosexual ‘man’ being involved with a heterosexual man. She’s legally & emotionally every bit a woman as I am. I don’t feel threatened by her, or afraid of her, etc. Apparently, there’s a lot of ‘Transphobia’ in the world, as well as within most of the comments I’ve read here. You need to educate yourself on Transgender issues, especially the physical and emotional parts. You need to learn the difference between a Transgender and a Homosexual. I feel people should be who they want to be, inside and outside. Why does that scare you? Don’t YOU want to be accepted for who you are? Sure you do! So, can’t you learn to accept EVERYONE for whomever they choose to be?
And, I LOVE the character of Nick, acted by the awesome Scott Turner Schofield. A transgender character being acted by a transgender man is an amazing occurrence. I’d like to see more of ‘Nick’, maybe eventually have his own storyline, maybe with a backstory. He’s a great friend & mentor to the ‘Maya’ character; so, maybe after people get more familiar with the ‘Nick’ character, ‘Nick”s’ story can flow into the story. I don’t feel ANYTHING has been shoved down people’s throats. People, get a life…and get educated!! Smh

Shemar Moore Makes Another Return to ‘The Young and the Restless’ as Malcolm Winters
When Shemar Moore (Malcolm Winters) made his most recent on-screen return to his old stomping grounds at The Young and the Restless back at the beginning of April. Viewers also know that it has been teased that he was not done taping his most recent return story arc, and that he would be back to wrap it up.
Circle next week on the Monday, June 8 and Wednesday, June 9 episodes of the top-rated CBS soap opera, when Malcolm Winters, who has survived his bone barrow transplant surgery after being diagnosed with aplastic anemia, is back for some important conversations.
This time out, he will reconnect once again with his daughter Lily (Christel Khalil) and is recently discovered biological son, Holden (Nathan Owens). In addition, according to Parade, he will interface with his son’s New York City “travel companion” in Claire Newman (Hayley Erin).

Photo: CBS
THE LEGACY OF MALCOLM WINTERS
Part of the bigger story is Malcolm’s relationship with his ex Dr. Stephanie Simmons (Vivica A. Fox), who happens to be the mother of his child, Holden. Viewers can look for some unfinished business that the two need to settle in the upcoming episodes. Both Moore and Vivica A.Fox first appeared together on Y&R back in 1994 and then some 30 years later just a few months ago.
Shemar Moore made his debut as the younger brother of the late Neil Winters (Kristoff St. John) back in 1994 and stayed with the soap until 2005. A Daytime Emmy win later, and with his first television experience under his belt, Moore went on to major primetime success on CBS’ Criminal Minds. Next, he helped launch and was the centerpiece for S.W.A.T. also on CBS, until it was canceled. Now, he will soon be seen in the new spin-off series, S.W.A.T. exiles.
During a recent conversation for Michael Fairman TV, Christel Khalil shared of working with her TV dad again: “It’s always amazing to have anyone come back that’s been away for a while, but especially, Shemar. It’s all the history with him being Lily’s dad. For me, it’s been 20 years of knowing him. Obviously, I don’t get to talk to him or hang out with him and that kind of thing. So it was just nice just to see him again and have that moment around Neil’s portrait, and to be able to share that together and even talk about that off-camera. It’s just special and feels like family, which is nice.”
So, looking forward to seeing Shemar Moore for a few more episodes as he wraps up Malcolm’s recent story arc and visits with his newly found son, Holden and his ex Stephanie? Do you hope for more emotional scenes that were not played out the first time he was back looking for a bone marrow donor to save his life? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

How ‘The Young and the Restless’ Mark Grossman Almost Became ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’s’ Thomas Forrester
As initially reported by Michael Fairman TV, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation recently held a live daytime drama casting directors panel which featured: Greg Salmon (The Young and the Restless), Marnie Saitta (Days of Our Lives), Christy Dooley (The Bold and the Beautiful), and Kim Coleman (Beyond the Gates).
The four soap opera casting directors traded behind the scenes stories, their process to help actor’s in the audition process, the most difficult and important recasts to their respective shows during their tenure, and the challenges of casting under-five roles, which surprisingly can harder than finding the series regulars.
When the talked turned to a major recast that Greg Salmon had to find it was to fill the shoes of Justin Hartley who exited the CBS soap to star on the NBC drama, This Is Us. The role of the black sheep of the Newman clan was previously played by Chris Engen and Michael Muhney, before Hartley. Salmon knew they found their man to be the fourth Adam when Mark Grossman entered the picture.

Photo:JPI
THE SEARCH FOR ADAM NEWMAN
Salmon explained, “That was a really tough role to recast. Before Justin, there were two other people who played the part. Adam Newman is central to the show. This is Victor Newman’s son, so it’s an incredibly important character. I remember Mark came in and read with Eric Braeden (Victor Newman) and a few other members of the Newman family. His energy was just off the charts. It felt like this is how Adam should be. Eventually, I think the audience really accepted him. Mark has playing the role for several (7) years now and he’s completely made the role his own.”
However, in an ironic twist, it appears that Grossman came very close to joining Y&R’s sister soap, The Bold and the Beautiful in the part of Thomas Forrester played most recently by Matthew Atkinson, and before that Adam Gregory and Drew Tyler Bell.
THE SEARCH FOR THOMAS FORRESTER
Responding to Salmon, The Bold and the Beautiful ‘s casting director Christy Dooley revealed that Mark Grossman was once in the running for the role of Ridge and Taylor’s son. “He tested for us,” she recalled. “Mark came in and read for the role of Thomas Forrester, and he was my choice for the role,” Dooley shared.
Dooley added, “The role wound up going to Matthew Atkinson. But then Mark came down (the hall) to read for The Young and the Restless.”
Fans of The Young and the Restless know that during his 7-years as Adam Newman, that Mark Grossman has become one of the most popular stars on the show. So it’s difficult to wrap you head around that B&B might have nabbed his first as Thomas, and if so, we wouldn’t have gotten to see him turn out those stellar performances in Genoa City .
So, what did you think of this casting tidbit? Could you have seen Mark Grossman as Thomas Forrester? Glad that Y&R had him firmly as their Adam Newman? Let us know via the comment section and you can check the full daytime drama casting director panel below.

Marc Forget Exits ‘General Hospital’
The Thursday June 4 episode of General Hospital paved way for the end of the line for Jenz Sidwell’s (Carlo Rota) butler/fixer, Pascal (Marc Forget).
In the pick of the June 3 cliffhanger, Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) was the hero and stopped the evil-doer from fleeing Port Charles for his part in aiding and abetting his boss with the cover-up of the murder of Professor Henry Dalton (Daniel Goddard) among other crimes.
Today’s episode did indeed mark the final appearance of Marc Forget who joined the ABC soap opera when he debuted back in July of 2025. Viewers met met Pascal when Kelly Thiebaud returned to the soap opera as Britt Westbourne and she was being blackmailed to work on Faison’s final project while at the Five Poppies in Dalmatia.

Courtesy/ABC
A General Hospital rep confirmed to Soap Opera Digest, that the June 4 episode, “Will be the last viewers will see of Pascal for now, but notes that in the world of Port Charles, comebacks are always possible.” So, how did Pascal get written-off the canvas? Here’s what went down:
PASCAL GIVES LUCAS KEY INFORMATION BEFORE BEING DRAGGED AWAY
After Sonny intercepted Pascal on his desperate attempt to get out of town, Sonny informed him hat Sidwell would stop at nothing from trying to get retribution for whoever killed his son, Marco, and promptly turned around and said that he would help Pascal flee the country, only if he turned on Sidwell.
An absolutely terrified Pascal had evidence for Sonny that he could use against Sidwell. However, he feared he would get killed on sight if he tried to retrieve the incriminating photos of Sonny and Laura from the safe at Wyndemere. So instead, Pascal gave the combination to the safe to Lucas (Van Hansis), so he could get the blackmail photos himself. But, did Pascal just set up Lucas to be killed since he loathes him for being the man to win the heart of the late Marco?
In the end, Sonny had one of his henchmen drag Pascal away and whisked off to an airfield to fly away to parts unknown, and hopefully never to be heard from again. But what now? Is Lucas going to end up being pegged as Marco’s killer and taken down by Sidwell if he gets his hands on the incriminating photos for Sonny and Laura? Stay tuned.
So, what did you think of Marc Forget’s run as Pascal? Sad or happy to see the character go? Do you think he will be back down the line? Share your thoughts via the comment section.
