The Jake Silbermann Interview – As the World Turns

© JPI Studios

It almost feels surreal, that in just four weeks we will be seeing for the last time (on our television screens) the remnants of the young gay love story that captivated the hearts of viewers worldwide.  I can only be talking about the story of Luke and Noah.  And with so much attention recently on LuRE, Reid and Luke’s burgeoning romance, it was die-hard fans of their favorite couple, Nuke, who jumped to it, wanting to hear from the guy who they felt got left behind in all this, Noah Mayer… actor, Jake Silbermann.  And as an equal opportunity soap opera website – having previously interviewed Van Hansis (Luke) and Eric Sheffer Stevens (Reid) – we were not going to let ATWT go off the airwaves without having each of the actors you have loved throughout the telling of these stories, a chance to say their views and parting thoughts.

Jake Silbermann came on to As the World Turns a little over three years ago, and as the stoic Noah, was the perfect counterpart to Luke Snyder.  One was level headed, and one was impulsive… a perfect soap opera match, indeed.  But, as with any soap through plot devices, some successful and some not, the couple was tested, leaving us with an upcoming ending for this historic love story that may leave some camps happy, some camps not-so happy, and some camps simply throwing their hands up in the air!

On-Air On-Soaps caught up with Jake to discuss the impact of being part of the same-sex couple, Nuke.  Jake tells us how much it meant to him personally, and how much he has come to realize this groundbreaking story has touched others, as well.  Plus, the ATWT series finale!  How does Jake see it?  Does Noah go out with a whimper, a roar, or a purpose?  Then, it’s on to: Van, Eric, “Gay Paree”, his exciting new film project, Stuffer, and a conversation on the continued fight for seeing under-represented segments of the population on your daytime television screens.  Jake has some very, very, good food for thought.  So with all that said… I give you one final ATWT time….Jake!

MICHAEL:

Jake, many of your fans, and fans of Nuke have wanted to hear from you. They want to know your thoughts on Noah’s lack of airtime for the past several months.  It’s been hard for them.  Some feel that you were shoved out of the picture to build up the Reid and Luke romance.  What are your thoughts on how this all played out? Were you upset by it?

JAKE:

© JPI Studios

As an actor, there was no emotional response from me because this is the story that ATWT executive producer, Chris Goutman, and the writers were looking to tell.  I was told I would be filming up till the very end of the show, which I was.  It was just very spread out, but I don’t take it personally.  I guess I was a little surprised in the way they chose to tell the story.  But I understand where they were going with it.  It was kind of interesting for me too, because I thought, “Hmm…  I wonder how they are going to end this?”  I didn’t know.  My real concern has always been that I hope at the end of the story that the fans are happy.  I have said this in other interviews… that is my one concern.  I know there is no way to make everyone happy, especially at this point, because a lot of fans want Luke and Reid to be together.  But, I have also been thrilled to take part in this storyline.

MICHAEL:

Many believed this story was supposed to be an actual triangle.  But since you were not on-air as much, they also feel that the word “triangle” is often used too loosely in regards to this story.  It has incited many Nuke fans.  Do you think this story is a true romantic soap triangle?

JAKE:

I think it’s a triangle, because fans probably know where Luke is coming from.  It’s part of the story even if Noah is not physically there.  I would think that Luke still thinks of Noah.

MICHAEL:

So last week, Noah told Luke he was moving to L.A.  And that he always envisioned that the two of them would head out west together.  Did he really always envision that?

© JPI Studios

JAKE:

That’s what he says he wanted.  I remember the two of them thought one day they might move to New York, too.  They wanted to get out of the Midwest, bad. (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

They wanted to go to some metropolis where there were more gay people! (Laughs)

JAKE:

I guess so. (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Noah’s blindness was a story for you, but also a means to an end, as a plot device to bring in Dr. Reid Oliver (Eric Sheffer Stevens).  But, I also felt like this story really showed that Noah grew up as a man and didn’t just take everything lying down.  He fought back!

JAKE:

Yeah, Noah can often come off as backing Luke up in whatever he does, and/or disagreeing with Luke, and then cleaning up Luke’s mess.  It’s nice to have had Noah go through a little bit more, and be a little less perfect.  He was such a Boy Scout before.  I am always up for having him being a bit more ruffled up.

MICHAEL:

Was it hard for you to pull off playing blind?  Sometimes on soaps, some actors look believable playing this physical disability, while with others it feels forced.

© JPI Studios

JAKE:

I did some research, and it was something I wanted to portray as accurately as possible, of course.  I hope I was able to pull it off.

MICHAEL:

In a recent item for TV Guide Magazine, between the publication itself and ATWT’s executive producer Chris Goutman, they sort of blew the lid off the ending of the Reid/Luke/Noah story, leaving fans angry, when the following was stated: “Prepare for a tragic, yet heroic, twist to the Luke-Reid romance — one that’ll set the stage for a potential rapprochement for Luke and Noah.”   Then, Chris Goutman added, “Without giving too much away, I do think Luke and Noah will always have a deep and abiding relationship.  Reid came along and challenged that love and his presence made Luke and Noah grow up.  Their relationship will endure.”  Goutman also revealed if the show hadn’t been canceled, Luke and Reid could have been a couple for the ages! “Their connection was immediate, and they are dynamic together!  Soon after Reid’s arrival, we had a lot of die-hard Luke and Noah fans suddenly rooting for Luke and Reid.  It was the best of what soap opera can be.” Jake, can you give me your reaction to this?  Many Nuke fans and fans of this story, are feeling from this precursor that all the gay people in Oakdale will be the one’s left unhappy, while the heterosexual characters will have their loves and ride off into the sunset together!

JAKE:

That is the first I ever heard that statement from Chris.  I don’t have any comment for it, except, I am not surprised that Chris said that, because Reid is a more interesting character than Noah.  (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

Jake, are you happy how the story ends for Noah?

JAKE:

Yeah, absolutely.  In the end Noah did grow up a bit, and in that way it was kind of a real story, not some over romanticized depiction of a first love.  These guys did have their moments, and sadly, sometimes people who grow close do move away from each other.  Ultimately, I am happy if the fans are happy.

MICHAEL:

© JPI Studios

Many have termed Luke and Noah’s romance as a “puppy love”, but many also have to remember how much the audience and the viewers have invested in these two!  We have watched them grow up together, go through heartbreak and tragedy, break-ups, and evolve.  I have interviewed former ATWT head writer Jean Passanante, Eric Sheffer Stevens, and Van Hansis (Luke) and asked them this question, and I would like to propose it to you.  Where would you like to see Noah five years from now, since we will never get the opportunity to see him on screen?  Jean told me that one of the guys might want to get legally married and perhaps have or raise a child.  Could you see Noah getting married?

JAKE:

Yes, of course, I could see Noah getting married.  He is an old-fashioned guy.

MICHAEL:

Noah is a filmmaker.  Could you see him in the future using his talents or lending his support to gay rights issues on a larger scale if ATWT was still on the air, or leaving us with some indelible impression in our psyche of what he will be doing?

JAKE:

You know, I enjoyed when Luke and Noah were pursuing grandeur causes other then just themselves.  I would love to do the gay rights storyline angle.  I thought the unique thing about As the World Turns is that it could have social impact.

MICHAEL:

It has been such an honor to be one of many who helped continue to bring this story to the gay community. You and Van did so much good through your roles and your openness to commit to the material.  The LGBT community is very sad these days, that when you, Van, and Eric go off the air in four weeks time, there will be no true gay storylines being represented anymore on daytime.

JAKE:

I think in that way, it’s pretty lousy that there has not been another same-sex couple that has really worked for a long time, and we are seeing it everywhere else.  I am a huge True Blood fan, and we are certainly seeing it there, and I think it’s great.  I think gay characters and depictions should be all over the place.  It is all over the place, except it’s not in daytime!

© JPI Studios

MICHAEL:

When I did speak with Jean Passanante on the end of Nuke’s storyline, and the lack of portrayal of gay characters… she offered the following statement: “I don’t think when ATWT goes off; it’s the end of gay characters. We are far from over when we have a world that has all types of people in it.  I think the best soaps will always reflect that.” Yet, earlier in 2010 the Kish romance on One Life to Live got axed, because many believed it was because middle America was just not “ready for it” and thus the rating were reflecting that.   Did you ever encounter a backlash?

JAKE:

I did not encounter any negative ill will or anything.  When I hear that, I think if any story is told well, you can tell it.  An eloquent romance should have little to do with the sexual orientation of the character, as long as it’s interesting.  When I hear that people aren’t “ready for it”, I am kind of at a loss.  I don’t get what it would take to get people “ready for it” at this point in time in 2010.

MICHAEL:

Y&R’s head scribe, Maria Arena Bell, told me for the same feature for Pride Magazine, that at one juncture the CBS network was inundated with a lot of Y&R viewers saying, “It’s not that I don’t like gay people, it’s just that I don’t want to see them on my show.”  That is the climate out there, it seems in part.  It’s a double-edged sword.  If fans don’t want to see gay characters or other minorities represented, then it doesn’t change the minds of the higher-ups to feel safe to deliver that to their fans without having people tune out and lose viewership.  This comes at a time with the soap genre suffering major setback after setback.  It’s quite the conundrum.

JAKE:

The thing is; I am sure they said that at one time about black romances, and that Americans did not want to see those characters.  I am sure there were times on the soaps where they were trying to represent it and people were writing in, too!

MICHAEL:

On a happier note, Jean also informed me that the Nuke fans sent hundred of neckties to the writer’s offices of ATWT, in support and recognition for Luke and Noah’s first on-screen kiss, which happened as a result of Luke adjusting Noah’s necktie.  Were you aware of the significance of these neckties?

© JPI Studios

JAKE:

Yes, but I did not know people were getting them sent to them!

MICHAEL:

Jake, has it felt to you through all that has happened for you in story, and with all the publicity generated behind Nuke, that it all happened in a blink of an eye, or does it feel like it’s been a long time?

JAKE:

I had been playing Noah for little more then three years.  It’s a funny thing.  I think those first few months feel like a long time ago, but it also felt like it went by quick.  Honestly, it was really a lot of fun.

MICHAEL:

Eric Sheffer Stevens told me in a recent interview, that one of his favorite scenes was when you decked him!

JAKE:

He said that it was one his favorite scenes?  (Laughs) You know, it was fun to finally see Noah do something so assertive.

MICHAEL:

How was working with Eric?

JAKE:

© JPI Studios

He is great, and I would love to work with him again.  He is one of those actors who comes in and has very specific thoughts on every scene.

MICHAEL:

So would you say, that both Reid and Eric were good adversaries?

JAKE:

I did not look at him like that as the character, or Eric like that.   As an actor, I wished we had more scenes together.  One of my favorite scenes with him was when Noah first confronts Reid.  I think he punches him in the bar.  But we had little verbal sparring, and I would have loved it if they could have strung that out longer.  That would have been great!  That is generally in soaps how they used to be. They would elongate these storylines.  I saw with ATWT, that our story arcs were getting shorter for whatever reason.  But every now and then I would think it was a good thing, and sometimes I wished that we could have taken our time a little bit more.

MICHAEL:

You and Van Hansis… Where do we begin?  You played the first real young gay male love story on daytime.  Off-screen as friends, I know you go to movies together, and you have flown around the world together to fan events.  Can you put into words what it has been like to work with Van, as your on-screen acting partner for most of the last three years?

JAKE:

First, it’s great to be able to work with somebody that you are really good friends with. So on that level, being on set and to spend that time together, is great.  Van is a great guy.  He is so professional to work with.  We would want to do the work and tell the story.  I felt there was that mutual respect for each other, and the crew, and the producers, that showed we were ready to dive in and make changes, as we needed to do on the fly.  It’s something that can be jarring, but I felt like we could rely on each other.

MICHAEL:

The phenomenon that is Nuke, took off globally like I have never seen for any couple in the history of daytime television.  From facebook, on twitter, at fan events…  people’s lives have been affected by the roles of Luke and Noah, which gave an under-represented segment of the world population something to look at and feel a part of.

JAKE:

© JPI Studios

I never thought it would be as far-reaching as it was.  But I knew when I was told by my agent, “Congratulations. You got a nice little summer job here.”  And I said, “Yeah, that’s great.”  I did not know the world of soaps, but I just knew there was a chance it could go longer.  And, I did not know until I started meeting with people from the show, that it was going to be the first gay storyline that was ever going to be really told.  From that point, I had some intuition that it would go longer.

MICHAEL:

You and Van have gone to Paris for two fan events.  How were they?  Many Americans are extremely jealous that they could not be there, especially this final visit to France.

JAKE:

We were just there last month in July.  It’s a big thing!  We went in October of last year for the first time, and then I think because we wanted to do it again; we did not want to do it again this October.  Van and I knew the show would be over by then, and we wanted to be able to do it over the summer, since we were asked to.  We did the event right before Bastille Day.  We had so much fun!

MICHAEL:

How do you think the European fans differ than the U.S. fans of Nuke?

JAKE:

I think everybody who makes trips out to these events are just passionate about the couple, and they really care.  I think that is definitely global.  One of the differences I feel with the worldwide fans is because they are watching the show via You Tube; they are not actually watching the episodes of the full show.  It just seemed like they were watching Luke and Noah.  What is interesting about that is, we brought up a question regarding the show, and some other characters or actors on the show.  Van and I could not remember what happens, and usually the audience knows better, and nobody knew.  I thought if that would have been an American audience, they would have known because they might have been fans of the show first.  It seems that fans overseas are very much fans of Luke and Noah over the show.  I cannot wait to share my new film with these fans.  I am not playing Noah in the least, when they see me in Stuffer!

MICHAEL:

© JPI Studios

How is your new film Stuffer coming along?

JAKE:

It’s going great, and I have been working really hard on it.  Right now, we are about a week or so away from being fully completed.  It’s at a very exciting stage, where we are tweaking it, and it has been very rewarding.

MICHAEL:

So what will be your plans for it?  Why the decision to do this story as your first foray into screenwriting?

JAKE:

The plan for this film is; I thought it would be a great experience for me to tackle something on a smaller scale, writing-wise.  I am not the lead in this film, but I wanted to write something that other people would want to take part in.  I wrote it with actors and directors in mind, so they would want to work on it, in whatever way they could.  I wanted every single role to be something an actor would be interested in.  This is my first screenplay.  I wrote some smaller things before, and since Stuffer is a short film, I am working on extending it.

MICHAEL:

What is the premise behind this film?

JAKE:

It’s about a female officer returning home from Afghanistan to her husband and child in fear they are going to foreclose on their home.  She is coming home with a secret.  And, the secret is that she is smuggling heroine.

MICHAEL:

What do you play?

JAKE:

I am playing her contact in the States.  We are going to have a screening in September and it won’t be readily available to fans at that time.  But, there will be a private screening for a small group of fans.

© JPI Studios

MICHAEL:

Will you invite Van and Eric to your screening?

JAKE:

Of course!

MICHAEL:

So we could possibly see the three of you in the same room at the same time? (Laughs) During your time playing a gay character, did it make you become more aware of gay issues, than perhaps you were before you played the role of Noah Mayer on ATWT?

JAKE:

Yes.  Before, I always felt knowledgeable about gay rights and was always sympathetic, but now I feel more involved.  I feel so proud to be part of something that fans say helped them.  And, I get sad when I hear people are so negatively affected by this one aspect of their lives and that they feel because of it, things for them could be made so difficult.

MICHAEL:

I have some news for you that you may not have known.  Did you know that you made it into the final three, and were third runner-up in Soaphunks.net’s annual Adonis 2010 contest?

JAKE:

Oh yeah?  Wow!  Well, did I get the sympathy vote? (Laughs)

MICHAEL:

You think?  (Laughs)  No!  Is the label “Soap Hunk” OK with you?

JAKE:

That’s Ok with me!  I am not offended.  I think it’s sweet more than anything else, and flattering.  I don’t let something like that go to my head.  I don’t look at myself like that. (Laughs).

MICHAEL:

© JPI Studios

Were you on the set of the taping of the last episode of ATWT?  Or, had you wrapped up your scenes as Noah earlier than that?

JAKE:

I was not there the final day. There was a wrap party that was fun.  It made me sad that we didn’t have more parties before that!  I was like, “Wow! This is a really great group of people.  We should have done this more!”  I am sure there were some tears shed, and it’s a different situation for everyone.  For some people, that is the end of not a career, but of a specific time in it.  Some people have been with ATWT for such a long time. What an amazing experience for them, to have taken these characters through so much.  I feel like I have done quite a bit in three years, and there have been moments where Noah has been heavy in story, but for the most part over that time, certainly not as many episodes as the show veterans.  Just a thought of what I went through in that amount of time I was there…. I can’t begin to imagine the experiences and the days they put in.  Some of these guys have probably forgotten more episodes than I was in.  It was a wonderful ride, and a very amazing experience.

MICHAEL:

What has been your all time favorite storyline of Noah’s?

JAKE:

His first storyline definitely, when he came out.  He only got to come out once.  And even then, it was a struggle for him.

MICHAEL:

And Noah’s father, Colonel Mayer, was not too happy about it.  That’s an understatement, I know.  But so many gay people are afraid to come out and face their family, because of their upbringing, and the possible disownment from their loved ones.

JAKE:

With that… here we had this character… we understand what he is afraid of.  There are so many people out there who that story related to.  Noah was trying to deny that part of himself and eventually, not wanting to fight it anymore, and not willing to deny who they are.  I think that can be such a scary and terrifying thing.  I know there are people out there who go through a difficult time, and when they decide to come out, it may not be a supported action from those people around them who are supposed to love them, no matter what.

MICHAEL:

© JPI Studios

It is shocking when they are not loved by the people who they think would love them unconditionally.

JAKE:

It is shocking, and it is sad.

MICHAEL:

I am sure you received many emails, letters, etc, from people thanking you for seeing their lives depicted, and for being someone on television for them to be able to look at and identify with.

JAKE:

I did.  It always meant more than anything to me to hear that, and to know that.  It was always a good feeling.

MICHAEL:

What would you like to say to the fans now, as a “thank you” for being so passionate about your character, Noah, and for you as an actor?

JAKE:

I would like to thank every one of them for supporting, and watching and caring about my character and my work on the show.  It means a lot.  I hope they will follow my career as it moves along, and that I will play other roles that may or may not resonate with them on an emotional level, but may still be entertaining, interesting, and illuminating for them to watch.

MICHAEL:

Would you play gay again in future projects?

JAKE:

© JPI Studios

Of course.   I would happily play any character no matter what sexual orientation they are, as long as there is something about the character in terms of story.  I am not sure I would go and play a gay character on another daytime show.  But in that sense, I do not say to myself, “Well I have done the gay thing.”  I just want to keep playing interesting characters.   I would love to play a gay vampire on True Blood.  I just love that show.

MICHAEL:

Ok, Jake, as we close our ATWT exit interview together, what is a tease from your perspective on the end of the Luke and Noah storyline, that we can say?  And, as I always ask in big situations like these, most importantly, will we need our hankies?

JAKE:

It’s a soap; of course you need your hankies.  I am saying, I think fans will be able to see what they are looking for in it.

Thank you for the interview with Jake. He’s very kind towards fans of his character and the Nuke storyline. Wish him the best in all of his future opportunities.

Jake is always a great interview and a classy guy. I can’t wait to see where his career takes him. He and Van have bright futures.

And as for this – “I am saying, I think fans will be able to see what they are looking for in it” – in my heart Noah and Luke are together forever. Living loving and rewarding lives.

Oh and one thing Jake – I never found the Reid character more interesting than Noah – never ever.

I don’t think Reid is more interesting than Noah either. But as an actor, I can see why Jake would think that. Because Reid got all the snarky lines and he got to be a “bad boy”. And we all knew Jake wanted Noah to have a darker side. And nice guys on soap operas always finish last, and people think they’re so uninteresting. But I disagree with that statement as well. Noah is far more interesting with all his untapped potential and backstory the show never decided to explore. We knew how it went when he came out of the closet, we know about his past, his family. We know about his passions, and his goals in life .We literally saw it unfold on-screen. With Reid, we know nothing besides he can snark with the best of them. So yes, Noah’s more interesting than Reid ever will be, in my opinion.

Reid bores me .

Me too! Never got into him.

Oh, I just love Noah & Jake!!! They are both awesome and I always found Noah interesting to watch in any degree. To say that Reid is more interesting does not seem very valid given that we have seen the characters at very different points of their lives. We have seen Noah go through so much & to think that Reid was interesting because of the so-called transformation he’s gone through w/Luke over the past few months would be ridiculous to even try to compare. Noah will always be more interesting because we have seen the memories of his past have a direct reflection on the decisions he makes now. All in all, Noah will always come out on top in interest AND hotness department! XOXO

Nuke forever and the all the love in the world to Jake Silbermann, a true gentleman in every form 🙂

Are you kidding?luke and noah became so boring!Luke and Reid were exciting to watch. The screen sizzled when they were on….they could show more love and caring for each other just by looking into each others eyes without uttering one word.I will always love Luke and Reid together…theirs was a grown up love and I think the writers left us in tears by their sad ending!!!!

Theres a reason they just looked into each others eyes, not utter a single word; everything they said sounded cold an insincere. There was more emotion, spoken and unspoken between Noah and Luke!

Michael, this is one of the best interviews, ever. It’s also sad, because this story on ATWT meant so much to all of us fans. We were very invested in it. Jake is so real and so meaningful in his remarks, that you just want to talk with him up close and personal. How he is so supportive of LGBT causes and the fact that he would play another gay role if it presented itself. It hurts me to know that we won’t see another story like this with such wonderful actors probably again. Too bad that the people from the networks and the writers and producers, etc. didn’t have the strength of purpose to fight for making a difference to the fans and to the television community. How sad…Maybe something will rise from these ashes and blossom into love and harmony in whatever form they come. Thank you,Michael, for showing the realities of TV, and for letting us meet Jake Silbermann. He is truly a good guy . I wish him luck with his writing and maybe he can write and finish this story. Wouldn’t that be poetic justice?…..

Doe..that would be great if Jake could write what happens next and him and Van star in it! x

I would love to see what would happen to nUKE if the show did not cancel

Class act, Mr. Silbermann. You are totally, without a doubt, a class act. I’m going to be sad to see Noah- and by extension Luke, Reid, etc- go in September, but I can’t wait to see what you do next; I’ll definitely be watching!

I think I pressed send too fast.

Anyway, what a nice interview. It’s great to have heard from all three guys in the story and get their different viewpoints. Having met and interviewed Jake myself, I always found Jake to be a smart and intelligent guy. I wish him well in the future.

And hey, even Jake knows that Reid was more interesting than Noah. LOL!

Well I’m sure you feel quit vindicated Mr. Langford. You can run with that tag line now.

Personally, I think Jake was being SARCASTIC. Ha!

**Anna makes a whooshing sound and goes to wipe her forehead**

Man, I’m relieved to know that you’ve “always found him to be a smart and intelligent guy”. I bet that was keeping Jake up at night wondering what a “puesdo-reporter” like you thought about him.

At least Micheal strove to hide any bias or non-bias while conducting the interview. I thought it was good and he asked some obviously uncomfortable questions and both he and Jake handled it well. It’s good to know that there’s at least one “professional” reporter out there in the soap press that doesn’t want to “Reidgasam” at the drop of a hat or in this case the mere name.

Great job Micheal and Jake.

You don’t know class when your read it do you? Jake is Mr. Class, he would never admit that he knows his character was more interesting than Eric’s. That not the way you want to be remembered in print. But let’s face it Reid was as snarky talking bore. He was totally predictable and self-absorbed!

What can I say about Jake Silbermann? He is a class act and a true gem. Though Noah has always been a more reserved and quiet character, I have always found him compelling and worth rooting for.
Though Luke may be louder and more impetuous, and Reid may be sarcastic and funny, it’s Noah by way of Jakes understated and nuanced performance that really connected to me on a more personal level.

I will miss Luke and Noah terribly, but I am glad that I do have three years of a story to look back on, that has changed my life in so many ways.

Though the show is ending, Luke and Noah will live on in the hearts, minds and imaginations of fans for years to come.

Jake is a gorgeous, kind and talented actor, and I wish him all the best.

Jake is an amazingly talented actor. It has been a pleasure watching him bring life to Noah over the past three years. I will never forget the impact his coming out storyline had on me and fans around the world. The fact that he puts so much thought into his answers and is able to empathize with his fans and genuinely care about them and how they feel is a real testament to the type of person he is, I will him all the best in his future endeavors.

Jake is such a class act. It’s that simple. And the way he cares about the fans, it’s more than I’ve seen from any other actor. What a truly, amazing, talented and an all around incredibly generous and beautiful man. I am very proud to be a fan of his. Thank you for this interview.

Jake is a class act. I always enjoy his interviews immensely because he totally gets his fanbase and wants us to be happy in the end. That speaks for how much he appreciates his fans and all the support he has received from us in the last three years.

Having met Jake myself, I can only say that he is one of the kindest, smartest and most talented guys out there. I cannot wait to see what the future holds for him. I for sure will follow him wherever his career will take him.

Great interview with Jake. Wonder if you are going to interview ESS again? Totally agree that Reid is a very interesting character.

Thank you Michael for the interview with Jake.

He has and always have MY HEART!

Thanks for the interview. I might not be a fan of Noah’s but I have mad respect for Jake. He did the best that he could with a character that was never fleshed out or integrated into the canvas. TPTB love to take credit for creating gay characters but they seem to forget that they stifled them and decided to focus on plot instead of character grown.

While I’m a Lure fan I had hoped that Jake would get more time on the canvas fleshing out and demonstrating Noah’s growth until the end.

I wish Jake all the very best and hope that his film helps open even more doors for him in the future.

Jake I love you with all my heart.
My adorable Noah.
Nuke Forever .

Luke has always been my favorite character and I often disliked Noah’s judgemental attitude towards him, but I wish jake a great career.

I agree.I too wish Jake the best but there’s no denying that they were children when he and luke were together.i don’t think anyone ever realized the chemistry and the love luke and reid would have. The writers really messed up the ending….so sad.Reid and Luke should have their happily ever after, and Noah could go to l.A. and make brilliant movies.

What an inciteful interview! It also helps bring some much needed closure on this show’s upcoming demise. As always Jake goes above and beyond the call of duty in describing spiritual connection with fans, views of his character, and even projecting Noah’s impact 5 years into the future! I have watched other ‘gay’ soaps filmed here and abroad and have never encountered the special on screen chemistry of Nuke. I wish there was a chat room or Nuke’s Anonymous so after the show folds, fans would have a place to go to affirm their love of these characters and their worldwide impact. Thanks again for a great interview and congrats on your ‘hunky’ accolades. Best wishes, Alan

You should join Facebook…we have a great Nuke community on there.

Jake Silbermann is as beautiful of a person on the inside as he is the out. While he may have been shafted by the show at the end, I will never forget the significance his character’s addition brought to the show. It was his portrayal of a closeted gay teen that helped so many people in the same situation come to terms with themselves. He truly helped change and save lives. This is an amazing accomplishment as an actor and not one too many can claim.

The best part about all of it is that he truly has no idea how talented and beautiful he is. He is so humble and down to earth and gracious. That is why he will always be my favorite actor from this show and Noah my favorite character. The life he breathed into him was extraordinary considering the limitations and restrictions placed upon him by the show. A talent like that is very rare…that is why I see him going far in this profession. He doesn’t have to act “big” like other actors to get his message across; he was able to tell Noah’s story with subtly and understated passion. A perfect combination!

Look forward to seeing “Stuffer” when it is release and everything else he does in the future. Mr. Silbermann definitely has made a fan out of me for life.

Even three years later, I SO agree with every single word you wrote about the character of Noah and the way Jake developed him with all these extreme limitations the head-writers and the producer imposed on him and the terrible disrespect they were showing during the last year – to Jake and his wonderful yearslong contribution and to hundreds of thousands of fans that were so in love with Luke AND Noah and had been supporting the show for years.

During the last year, it was clearly the personal agenda of the new co-head writer that only wanted to pimp his newbie best buddy and probably thought he could set himself a monument by putting all these predictable “fuuuunnny” lines into the “Doctor’s” mouth. By the way, what kind of doctor doesn’t understand the devastating situation and severe depression a young patient that has just lost his sight is in and throws himself at this patient’s boyfriend?? But I digress.

I just love the way you put my and our admiration for Jake’s wonderful work and personal contribution (also off-screen when he traveled around to fan events all around the world, together with Van) into the best possible words. I loved the character of Noah, exactly because he was not a LOUD character that found himself soooo cool and funny, but someone sincere and authentic with – as you put it so perfectly – subtle and understated passion.

I believe he is the best boyfriend and life partner one could ever imagine and he evolved and matured a lot over the years. I still miss Noah (and Luke) so much. Maybe some day we will finally get to see them together again – let’s not give up that dream! The most important thing is, however, that I think Jake has already accomplished a lot since the end of ATWT that he can really be proud of – and we’re all looking forward to so much more. Health, success, love and happiness to you, Jake!!

Love Noah. Noah was a much more interesting character, IMO. I’m sure we will see Jake move on to more bigger and better things in the future.

Thank you for this great interview with Jake. I appreciate his attitude towards the fans so much. Even though I am so incredibly frustrated with ATWT and their handling of Noah, and his relationship with Luke and other characters on the show, I will never regret watching to see Jake and Van play Noah and Luke. What they brought to me as a viewer is indescribable.

I wish Jake all the best in his future endeavors…I think he will see a great deal of success. I know I will watch him in anything he does.

I have been sitting here for a while now typing and erasing thoughts…I wanna just go on and on and on about how wonderful Jake and Noah are….which is so very true by the way…but then I get so frustrated with everything that has happened on the show the past 6, 7, or 8 months or whatever and I just wanna scream and bitch and throw a hissy fit…so yeah…I’m struggling here!!!!!!!!!!

Ya know what…I think I’ll save the screaming and bitching and hissy fits for my friends…THEY FEEL MY PAIN…instead I’ll gush about Jake….YEAH….THAT’S IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😀

JAKE SILBERMANN YOU.ARE.GORGEOUS…YUP…YOU ARE…GUH!!!!!!!! YOU CAPTIVATED OUR HEARTS WITH THAT SHY, UNASSUMING NOAH MAYER 3 YEARS AGO AND TURNED HIM INTO A LOVING, PASSIONATE, DETERMINED, THOUGHTFUL, HARD WORKING (HOW MANY TIMES DID YOU WIPE DOWN THAT COUNTER AT JAVA? **GIGGLES**) ADORABLE, FUN LOVING, GUY WHO COULD THROW A MEAN PUNCH (THEY BOTH SOOOOOOO DESERVED IT…WHOOOOO HOOOOOOO :P) AND COULD SHOOT A GUN (UMMMMM YEAH…SEXY **SQUEEE**)…FUN TIMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😀

JUST KNOW, JAKE THAT YOU HAVE SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MANY FANS OUT THERE THAT ABSOLUTELY ADORE YOU AND WISH YOU NOTHING BUT THE GREATEST SUCCESS IN YOUR CAREER AND LIFE….KEEP US UP TO DATE WITH ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING, BB….WE LOOOOOOOOOOOVE YOUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK….

I think I’m done!!!!!!!!! LOL

Ooooooh look at that…I’ve got smiley faces on my post!!!!!!!!!! 😀

Stupid internet lost my comment! Let’s try this again.

While I never have been and never will be a fan of Noah or Nuke, I think Jake seems to be professional and appreciative of his fans. I wish him good luck in the future.

I agree with him that Reid is a more interesting character and many of us want to see Luke end up with him, even if that means we have to search desperately for a sliver of happiness in the ending. I’m happy that Jake recognizes this fanbase without taking it personally. Liking Eric, Reid and LuRe is NOT a personal insult to Jake, and I’m glad that he realizes that and takes the developments in the storyline in stride. If nothing else, it demonstrates again how professional and mature he is in regards to this job.

You too, don’t you realize Jake only said that because it’s the classy thing to do. Reid was self absored and predictable and that made him boring.

OMG! What a wonderful perspective on his years as Noah. I teared up – yes, I admit it. Why they never developed Noah on ATWT I can not understand. So much gold there. Anyway, please casting Gods, grant Jake’s wish to be on True Blood. I can just picture him with Sam or Jason.

Great interview. It shows why the 3 gay characters on the show were really interesting; just a pity ATWT didn’t do more for them before the end.

Thanks for the interview with Jake. He is one class act. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for him.

All I want to say that Jake is professional talented, and very intelligent guy. Just one thing
Noah is a character that didn’t talk so much, Noah talk more with his eyes, his face, his body, than the words, and Jake is capable to do this in a very incredible way

I love how Jake is so humble and classy towards his fans. I’ll never forget him as Noah and I can’t wait to see him in other roles .

Jake’s one of those actors who tries to show his best and real face through the character. I love the fact he wanted to spend more time with Eric and have more scenes together ( LOL he realised Reid has better views than noah and is less boring ). he’s such a caring man wheathe he’s a celebrity or not, he always tries his best to get online on facebook as much as he can and replies to fans ! He’s just so humble and always relaxed during his interviews ! nice one lloved it !!

Thank you for this interview. I was lucky enough to meet Jake in Paris in July and it was an honour. He is such a lovely guy and he lite up when talking about Stuffer. I can’t wait to see it. I know the ending is left to what we want it to be….sad really. I think the Nuke fans deserved more. x

Fabulous interview! Jake – you are simply the best! Your wonderful character of Noah and Van’s terrific character of Luke have assured that Luke and Noah will always be in my heart!

Nice Interview Mr.Fairman, I liked the way Jake cares about his fans! Curious about the Stuffer as well. I think every character has something to bring to the audience in its specific way. REid was lucky to be written just more conspicuously :))) LOL Anthony 🙂

Jake my dear ,you`re my favorite.
You are in our hearts.
Hope you much success in your life you deserve.
Noah will always my favorite character.
Nuke will always be the most loved couple of ATWT.
I love you Jake forever.

Thanks for the lovely interview of Jake. While I’ve lost faith with the character of Noah, I was deeply moved by his coming out story, and I always thought Jake portrayed him consistently and well. He always made him very human; as someone who saw things in black and white, but really tried hard to be fair and responsible.

I enjoyed seeing Luke and Noah become grown men together, and the scenes lately where they have spoken like friends with a deep, rich history have really resonated. Thanks, Michael, for the interview, & thanks, Jake, for keeping it classy!

Thank you for the nice interview.

I love Nuke but I wanted to see Noah & Reid. Their battle or funny morments.
They would be much more interesting than Luke & Reid.

I’m not a fan of Jake’s acting: he unerplays a lot, does nothing exceptional with his lines. It makes noah very dull and I always found myself looking more at what happened in the background when he was on screen. I am a huger fan of Van Hansis’ acting! But jake is classy, except when he says that noah was always there to clean Luke’s mess: That’s not true. Noah was creating 99% of Luke’s problems, always rejecting and neglecting him for nothing and leaving Luke dealing with the problems that were creating within the couple. And Luke is more than 99% of the nuke stories, because he is the one who takes actions when noah just stares and makes boring faces.

Jake, you are a class act all the way. You named everything that is wrong with the show without being snarky about it. Most of all, the shortened storylines. Honestly, so much angsty potential wasted. 😉 The show deserved to die, but I feel bad for the actors. At least you all had some time to get used to the idea.

And for TPTB planting the notion that you were unavailable and that’s why Noah gets so little screen time in the end – we all knew that was a lie before you refuted it. But I’m so glad you did! That was classless on their part, and you deserved better from them.

Love you! Good luck with the rest of your career. And have fun in Boston!!

Jake, thank you for your kindness to your fans. I will always love you.
Have a good time in Boston, and whenever you want to visit China, just leave a message and you’ll get a warm-welcome from your Chinese fans. (I’ll gethering all the Chinese-Nukies I swear lol )

What a nice interview. Thank you!!

Jake is a classy guy, but he was always more believable with the ladies on the show. LuRe is the love story of the century and fans are heartbroken over the planned killing of our beloved Dr. O….The internet is in a frenzy and the cbs website is burning up with disgruntled fans. The scene between Noah and Luke at Java back in June when they talked how their relationship was beautiful but over, felt right. Fans want to see Luke HAPPY and certainly believe, after all we have gone through watching Dr. O become a “real human” he DESERVES his happy ending.

“Many Americans are extremely jealous that they could not be there, especially this final visit to France.”

Lol. They can see them whenever they want, I mean, there are many fan events in USA. What should think European fans? They’re fans also. Us American fans can be so immature…

love Noah, love Jake, and love Nuke!!! Cann’t wait to see his film

I’m a grown athletic guy who followed Noah’s coming out story. He personally helped me & I could see myself in him. I was hooked! I now even have a huge crush on JS. Will miss him already. Hope to support him in his upcoming film projects. Definitely would follow him to True Blood! He’s high class, ATWT couldn’t tap his hidden talent. Subtlty, mystery, masculine sexyness, he reinvented the “gay” cliche role. Refreshing!

I can’t believe it’s over Nuke was great and so was luRE but Nuke inspiered me more to accept myself for who I am and now I’m more comfortable with myself not having to hide from the truth but it’s really sad that this is over because i was hoping that this was going to go on a little more because I would have loved to see Luke and Noah (Van and Jake) in L.A that would have been really cool but they still have the show on youtube so I can still watch it when ever I want. I love your guys’ work it was great while it lasted

These terrible head writers that threw Nuke under the bus killed the show and drove so many fans away. Dr. Pri** was only pimped because he was obviously the new co-head writer’s best buddy.

That whole story was so predictable with all those forced “funny” lines they laid into his mouth, while painting Noah as the annoying guy, totally distorting the devastating situation he was going through after losing sight. People who lose sight usually fall into a deep depression, some of them never return to “normal” and many of them try to commit suicide.

It was totally perverse how the head writers used this plot only to pimp Dr. Housewannabe who acted like the worst (non-) doctor one could ever imagine by interfering in his patient’s private life without any understanding of his condition. With that whole crap, the head writers also totally distorted Luke’s character and his yearslong history with Noah, because the Luke we knew would never have NOT understood Noah’s situation. And he would never have trown away their wonderful relationship for nothing.

By the way, Jake’s akting as blind Noah, despite the ridiculously little air time he got, was absolutely brilliant. He brought across the incredible pain and inner turmoil Noah was going through and the fact that he just COULDN’T give Luke what he would have wanted to give him in the best possible way. Unfortunately, he never got any credit for that by these terrible head writers and the producers.

And although the doctor continues to be hyped as “sooooo interesting” and having “sooooo much impact” by some obviously paid writers or people who had never cared for ATWT before, the ratings went lower and lower, because Nuke fans who had been following Luke AND NOAH and supported the show for years just couldn’t support all these lies and distortions anymore. Mr. Kreizman, the new co-head writer, knew how to destroy soaps, first Guiding Light where he was head writer since 2004, then ATWT during its last 15 months.

After so many years, I still came back to read this interview. Jake and Noah were and still are very special to me. Jake did a wondeful job portraying a lovely confused gay man, and seeing his development during those years made me love him more and more with each episode. No other character has resonated with me in the way Noah did.

Jake, I love you and i will always continue supporting your career no matter what. Thank you for your hard work and passion. All the best to you.
