Leave it to the grand dame Maggie Smith to have fun with Jimmy Kimmel’s rant last night on the 68th annual Daytime Emmy about how perennial winner Smith never is on-hand in Los Angeles on Emmy night to collect her trophy when he name is called!

Smith, who has been nominated 9 times for an Emmy and has won 4 overall and 3 of them for her work as the Dowager Countess on the beloved British period soap, Downton Abbey, used social media via the Masterpiece PBS Twitter account and shared her acceptance speech on Monday, alluding to Kimmel’s last gag about her during the live telecast.

For Minnie Driver and Michael Weatherly were presenting the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category, and when Smith was announced as the winner, and the duo were accepting the the award on Smith’s behalf, Kimmel came out from the wings and intercepted the trophy and let Smith know she has to retrieve it herself! Kimmel said, “No, no, no, no, no.  We’re not mailing this award to her. Maggie, if you want this it’ll be in the lost and found”.

Masterpiece PBS twitter shared, Dame MaggieSmith graciously accepts her #Emmy award — @jimmykimmel, please advise on the location of the lost and found! #DowntonPBS.

Smith’s acceptance speech read: “I was very astonished and pleased to win the award. I feel the Emmys has been overly generous to me. If Mr. Kimmel could please direct me to the lost and found office I will try and be on the next flight.”  She signed it, “Love, Old Maggie”

So, what did you think of Maggie’s acceptance speech?  What did you think of her remarks back to Kimmel?  Do you miss Downton Abbey and her performance as the Dowager Countess?  Comment below!

I found the comedy bit by Jimmy Kimmel to be hysterical!

It’s a great and amusing comeback by Maggie Smith. I give her props for acknowledging, “…the Emmys has been overly generous to me.”

I personally get tired of the same actors, actresses, and shows winning the Emmys repeatedly. And I have made the same criticisms of the Daytime Emmys…

She is flat out the bomb! I love her!

Rose

I love her! The only thing I would have loved more, would have been to have heard her say it in a short vid posted on twitter. Miss D. Abby too.

Congratulations on this VERY well-deserved accolade for the magnificent Dame Maggie! I adore both the actress and her legendary Lady Violet Crawley!!!! As for Miss Smith’s clever response, I think I would have added the “Dowager Countess”” query as to “What is a lost and found office?” Seems to me she would have considered this common concept as equally mystifying as that now-famous “weekend,” and as such, would have simply dispatched Spratt and Denker to retrieve said item!!

It looks like all of those earlier reports months ago about a production being put together for Downton Abbey: The Movie, may finally becoming to fruition. Numerous items detail that motion picture project is moving forward with production slated for sometime next year.

Michael Edelstein, president at NBCUniversal International Studios, told the AP: “We are working on getting the script right and then we’ve got to figure out how to get the (cast) together. Because as you know, people go on and do other things. But we’re hopeful to make a movie sometime next year.”

Currently, the cast and writer Julian Fellowes have been on hand at the Downton Abbey exhibition which debuted in Singapore. However, some notable members of the company seemed surprised by the news including Laura Carmichael (Edith): “Well, tell my agent, because we’re still waiting to know. We’re hoping that will happen soon.”

Variety reports that an NBCUniversal spokesman confirmed the studio hopes to put the movie into production in 2018.

The Downton Abbey exhibition however, is set to travel to the United States and Australia with dates to be announced. (more…)

68th Primetime Emmys: Dame Maggie Smith Wins For Downton Abbey But Is A No-Show Yet Again, David Canary Included During In-Memorium Segment!

Courtesy/PBS

Last night at the 68th annual Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, host Jimmy Kimmel pointed out in his opening monologue how Dame Maggie Smith, who has now received nine Emmy nominations, never shows up to the TV kudofest.

He joked, calling her “Downton absent,” as he wondered outloud to the crowd, “What is wrong with us? Why do we keep nominating this woman?” He continued: “Lame Maggie Smith, if you want an Emmy, you better hop on a plane right now and get your Dowager Count-ass over here.”

Later in the broadcast, when Smith’s name was ultimately called for the third time for her performance as the Dowager Countess on the final season of ‘Downton’ in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series category, it made it four Emmy wins overall for this icon.  When Smith was again a no-show, Kimmel stepped up to the mic and was able to continue his gag by grabbing the gold statuette and shouting out to Smith, “If you want this, it will be in the lost and found.”

And in another moment for soaps fans, whether they be primetime or daytime, occured during the touching In-Memorium tribute as Tori Kelly performed and sang the classic Leonard Cohen song “Hallelujah”.

It was there that All My Children’s David Canary was included as part of those remembered, both for his work as Adanm and Stuart Chandler on the long-running ABC soap opera, and for his role on Bonanza.  Others included in the clip package ranged from: David Bowie, Prince, Glenn Frey, Gene Wilder, Gary Shandling, and Anton Yelchin.
