ABC Exec Vicki Dummer Interview: The Plans For GH and Addressing The Fans Concerns!

At this past Friday night’s ABC Summer Press Tour TCA Cocktail Party, On-Air On-Soaps had the opportunity to chat with Vicki Dummer, ABC executive vice president of Times Square Studios, Current Series & Specials, who is now the successor to Brian Frons overseeing all of ABC Daytime’s re-jiggered line-up!

As many know, Vicki was brought in when Brian Frons stepped down from his position last December over much controversy from cancelling All My Children and One Life to Live and replacing these beloved shows with The Chew and The Revolution.  Once Frons was out, Vicki Dummer was part of the massive restructuring of the higher-ups at ABC.

We asked Dummer point blank, what are her plans for General Hospital? How is she working with the show to keep it on the air?  And, we address what has been of concern to many soap fans of late: Is Good Afternoon America going to get a permanent slot in the ABC Daytime line-up? What if any future could One Life to Live and All My Children have with ABC once they retain the rights to the shows back from Prospect Park?

Ultimately, what we came away with is that Dummer is getting behind GH for the foreseeable future, and as you have read from many of the GH casts tweets and posts, they feel like ABC is firmly behind them at this juncture.   So here now is our interview with Vicki!

Everyone is like, “Who is this woman?”  People in the industry of course knew of you, but the daytime fans did not.  And they are thinking, “What is she going to do our shows?  Should we be afraid of another cancellation of the lone remaining ABC soap, General Hospital?”  I assume that was one of the reasons you had to make sure that everybody knew that you are 100% behind GH!

VICKI:  Here is the thing: I have been a big fan of the soaps, and especially General Hospital since I was a kid.  I watched GH when I was in college.  I scheduled my college classes around Luke and Laura, like everybody.  I drifted away from it, but I got my parents into it.  So my parents watch GH every single day.  So I have a very personal focus group for General Hospital.   I am asked a tremendous amount of questions about GH and where the stories are going, and it matters to them.  I know there is a tremendous fan base out there that loves these soaps and loves these characters and wants to see the stories continue.  I am going to do whatever I can to help that continue.  That is part of having the cast of GH at the ABC Summer TCA Press Tour and honoring the upcoming 5oth Anniversary, and having them here at the party.  These folks work so hard day, day in and day out, and do such great work.  It is about honoring their work and these tremendous actors!

The cast and crew so thrilled you gave them the recent on set party for their Daytime Emmy victories.  It showed that the network noticed!  You are from a very different background than soaps, creating lifestyle and makeover shows such as the hit Extreme Makeover brand.  Do you think in hindsight, if it had been you in this position at the time, would you have made the call to keep One Life to Live and All My Children on the air?

VICKI: You know, I can’t really look back.  I know there were a lot of factors that went into that decision … a lot of business factors, and a lot of looking where we were as a business.  You have to look at that and weigh that.  I know there are so many fans that are disappointed and loved those characters and stories.  I know they are really heartbroken that they are not on anymore, and I feel that.  I hear from soap opera fans that they want to see those characters, and see how their lives are progressing out their in the world. But I can’t look back on that.  My predecessor made those decisions for a variety of factors.

But knowing the audience is outraged, rabid, and wants to see Pine Valley and Llanview again … are you exploring any options such as a special, a mini-series, or something to in part satisfy them in some way?

VICKI:  There have been a lot of conversations about if there is something we could do and we are exploring that. When the Prospect Park deal was blowing up, I know the fans were so looking forward to those shows being online and the actors were too, of course.  I know it was a huge disappointment, and it was a huge disappointment for us too.  We were looking at that as that would be the continuation of the characters.

But don’t the rights soon revert back to ABC?

VICKI:  They do.  Basically it is a year after.  So soon they will be back in our hands and then we have to figure out what we are going to do.

Both of OLTL’s replacements; The Revolution and Good Afternoon America neither clicked!  If you had come in at that point and were putting something on instead of One Life, what would you have put in their time slot?

VICKI:   I did not put on The Revolution or The Chew, that was my predecessor, but I do think that The Chew is a terrific show.  It is firing on all cylinders.   I don’t know if you saw this moment at the party where Carla Hall saw Maurice Benard, and she nearly lost her mind, which was fantastic.  Carla is a big fan of the soaps as are a number of people on The Chew.  As is Katie Couric, and a lot of people.  Good Afternoon America seemed to be a stop-gap for us when we cancelled The Revolution, and when General Hospital moves to its new time slot.  It’s really going to be about The Chew, GH, and Katie for us. I am excited about that line-up.

People are still concerned that Good Afternoon America is going to be on the air forever, and replace GH!

VICKI:   It was on for a nine week trial and we have been really, really clear. We are with General Hospital.  General Hospital is moving to 2PM in most time zones and that is the show in that time period.  I know fans are nervous, and they have seen one soap after the other be canceled.  There are no guarantees in this world, but we have the GH cast here, we are focused on the 50th Anniversary in April of 2013, and we just want to celebrate the show and look forward to what’s next.

Recently, we have seen more on-air promos for GH running more in the day part. We have not seen that appropriately in daytime, sufficient promotions for the support of the soaps.  Was that a decision you made coming into your new position?

VICKI:  When I came on we restructured a lot of departments. We restructured our PR and Marketing Departments, and ABC Daytime and Primetime are all in one group now. The good news is our head of marketing, Marla Provencio used to cut all the on-air promos for the daytime soaps.  Marla has an affinity and is a fan of soap.  And as you heard from ABC Entertainment President, Paul Lee at the panel, he started in a Brazilian soap opera and as he said, he worked in the U.K. and unfortunately it happened to be on the show that was voted the worst soap opera ever in the history of the world!  (Laughs) He also comes from the U.K. where Eastenders and Coronation Street, and all of those shows, have such a legacy.  We are supportive of this genre. We want to see it continue and succeed.  So we want to put what we can behind it, and make sure people know about the time change, and make sure we are working with the creatives and Frank Valentini, and making sure that fans who have left the show come back, and re-strengthen that number.  If we do all that, we have a great, great case for keeping GH on the air.

Are you overseeing the creative with Frank Valentini and Ron Carlivati at GH? Are you hands-on with each of the shows in the daytime line-up now?

VICKI:  I have a point executive on GH named Agnes Chu.  That is her only job to look at the storylines and characters.   But what had been great is; I have had phone calls with Frank and our head writer, Ron Carlivati to find out where they are going with storylines, and to find out if we are all on board with the direction things are going.  That we have big events, such as we are looking at the September time period change to do one, and maybe that is a good opportunity to pick up new viewers. Also, what we can be doing using some of the stories, as well as using some of the cast of characters from the past, which you are seeing now with Heather Webber.   So we have a lot of people that have come back to the canvas, and we want to sort of pick up the lapsed viewer to get that rating up.  And also, if people don’t know anything about General Hospital they can check in and they can be engaged in the stories and sort of become new viewers.  Hasn’t Frank Valentini been doing a great job?!

Yes he has!  I have known Frank for a very long time, and he and others know that One Life to Live was my favorite soap.  I championed that show and now I am trying to champion General Hospital.  The One Life to Live viewers were so gut-wrenched and felt so kicked to the curb because their show was doing so well, and in no way deserved to be axed.

VICKI:  I know, I know, and it is heartbreaking.  I get tons of email. although some of them are very mean to me.  Please just tell them, “Stop being so mean!”

Don’t we all have those pull your hair out days at our jobs?

VICKI:  Yes, but I am blessed.  I get to watch television for a living and who doesn’t love that?

How far ahead are you planning story for GH?

VICKI:  They have notions that are further along, but they are looking at September and October stories now. And of course, further than that and thinking where they are going with characters, and are their new character to introduce.  And, what should we do with storylines. I pitched some storylines that I would like to see!

Ah, but the question is, “Did you pitch some storylines that your Mom and Dad would want to see?” (Laughs)

VICKI:  You know what?  It’s funny; I always preface it by what my Mom and Dad would do, because they are my little focus group.  They are literally like, “When is Maxie coming back? “

Do they have a favorite character on GH?

VICKI:  I don’t know if they have a favorite, but what always amuses me is my mother and my father both watch together.  My mother would watch it, and my dad would just be there.  Now, he says to my mom, “So are we going to watch General Hospital?”  He looks forward to it just as much as she does.  I loved on the panel yesterday when the cast was talking about running into cops and hookers and all these people, you would think are not fans of GH, but are!  You get hooked on the characters and their lives, and you become curious as to what is going to happen to them next.  I think that is a wonderful respite in the middle of people’s afternoons.

I have not felt the moral so good at GH … in such a long, long time!

VICKI: Because they did not feel a part of it!

Right! Can you imagine all these years not feeling a part of it?  And acting their butts off, and all that goes into it, and all the fans and seemingly feeling no one at the network is caring about their show!

VICKI:  It is also having them be an after-thought!  I get it.  And how hard these guys work to deliver the material!  How much material they go through in a day is really, really tough.  A friend of mine was a daytime soap actor on Days of our Lives many years ago.  I would say, “How do you memorize all that material?” And to internalize it and then to act it, I think it’s actually pretty amazing what they do.

So soapers, after reading Vicki Dummer’s comments to some very important questions and concerns, what do you think?  Do you feel any better about the future of General Hospital in her hands? Let us know!

She sounds like her head is in the right place. Nice to see her so enthusiastic about the show. Of course, I’m always wary of what execs will do with soaps, but I have no problems with anything this one has done so far.

Anyone who consults with/listens to her parents must be interested in doing the right thing!

I don’t think ABC would be doing the things they’re doing to promote GH if their intentions weren’t in the right place. I’ve been very critical of CarTini in the past, but in the last few weeks, everything seems to be turning around and the story lines are becoming more view-worthy. I find very little to FF through anymore.

My biggest complaint is that a lot of what CarTini are writing now is a re-hash of OLTL stories, but I guess after 50+ years of soaps there is bound to be much re-telling of stories. It’s up to the writers to make them more current and compelling.

All in all, things are finally looking up.

Sounds like they heard our screams and boycotts. Also sounds like the Frons’ “kill the ABC soap genre” phase is over. Probably because of our screams and boycotts!! I’m optimistic that GH is forever and I pray I’m right!!!

I agree with you Greta, it sounds like she is pushing for the show, but also letting us know they want the audience to build and that is going to be the key.

I do think it will be on at least till April when it celebrates it 50th! That seems like something they are planning.

Okay Vicki Dummer, I won’t be mean to you for now ;-D But I do believe Mr. Lee already needs to go be with Frons. From the 2 interviews I have read with him, he is NOT a soap fan. Please don’t keep him.

Here are my feelings on GH (and OLTL) – I believe you are making a huge mistake in moving the time slot of GH. Please leave it where it has been for a long time.

As I was reading your interview, it was very easy to read between the lines. I don’t believe you are committed to GH, I believe you will ax it with the excuse of ‘bad ratings’…which will be, in part, because of the move. Another reason is people don’t trust ABC anymore. They allowed Frons to betray us and he didn’t listen to the fans. Paul Lee seems to have that same attitude.

I have NEVER watched the chew, I never will. I will not watch Rikki Lake, I will NEVER watch Katie Couric. I will record GH so I can watch The Talk on CBS. We have also given up all abc primetime shows. My husband would have watched GCB and/or Body of Proof but you canceled them. So, no more abc except GH. And naming a new primetime show 666, might as well cancel it now, to many Christians will boycott that one, I suspect loudly.

Now, here is my hope, someone smartens up (hoping it is YOU) and brings back OLTL at the very least, put it back in it’s own time slot. If you won’t bring it back, then *give* it back to Agnes to do with as she pleases. Maybe she can find homes for her soaps, then you can let her have GH as well and make the fans happy and not have canceling it hanging over your head. (I’m still really ticked off at the daytime emmy’s for how OLTL was basically ignored. It was more about AMC, which I had quit watching 20 years ago.)

You have a nice face, it makes me truly want to believe everything you said, but there were to many hints throughout the interview. Prove me wrong, please and bring back OLTL. Until that happens, I have blocked all other abc stations along with all disney stations. They won’t be on in our home until abc makes it right.

Good luck with your job, I hope you are a magician and can pull OLTL out of your hat. They cancled them for *business* reasons, looking like busines is not so good and fans will continue to boycott. I also boycott the sponsors of the other shows you have put on. I’m stubborn and have no plans to change until you bring back OLTL and get more of a LONG TERM commitment to GH.

I agree with you that time with tell if she can be trusted.

Unfortunately, SHE will not bring back our mutal favorite OLTL. It was a bad decision then and still is now, and everyone knows it.

I believe OLTL did not get the recognition we wanted them to receive because they were on the air in 2012, meaning they will be apart of next year’s Emmy show. The focus was on AMC because they will not. Being a soap fan for the better part of my life, having watched all three ABC soaps for many years, I will not be upset about the recognition AMC received. It was not my fav soap as that has always been GH, but they deserved their moment to shine and next year will be all about OLTL.

Right on, Jody, The Chew is a huge loser of a show. There’s nothing less appealing than watching a group of out of shape non-personalities sit around and eat and talk about food. Good grief, I could go sit in a fast food restaurant and get that experience without having to use household electricity and turn on a TV. OLTL – ABC does need to admit they made a huge mistake and bring the show back. I’ve been boycotting their tired network ever since they dropped my favorite soap. The sad thing is, as they keep losing viewership due to the small-minded and lack of shows with heart in their lineup, they will keep looking for more ways to cut costs. Thus, more “reality?” shows, more cheap-to-produce shows like “The Chew” will be what ABC sees as the solution. Sadly, that means shows lacking quality, the quality our soaps had.

I agree with everything you said Jody. I will never watch the replacement shoes myself. I love the people but I can’t watch. As for Katie. I never liked her and I won’t watch her!!!! Many people won’t. We had a lot to do with the success of the network, we bought the products now we don’t.

With RC writing he is destroying so many characters and I don’t watch GH. Many other fans feel that way and unless something changes there then GH won’t be able to be saved with viewers tuning out cuz they don’t like the writing of the show. I do believe that ABC wants out of soaps cuz production is expensive, talk shows and reality shows are cheap and easy.

There are always going to be people out there that are never happy with anything, but the vast majority of the comments I read, and even people in my own family that watch GH, have been talking about how good it’s been lately.

I’m curious, what characters do you think are being ruined?

Besides the OLTL characters. I don’t watch so I can’t say specifics but RC only knows how to destroy not build he did on OLTL and the little I watched when the OLTL characters joined and the characters were different from the way I remember em.

Thank You Michael for a great interview! I can on say that I think Frank and Ron are doing an awesome job with GH….I hadn’t watched GH in years but due to the OLTL crossovers I started watching again as did many other OLTL fans. I believe that between the OLTL fans and the OLTL writers that is what saved GH from being axed…So basically the GH fans should be grateful for a great writing team that is saving our show. We need to continue to support GH!

I agree with you Dan, General hospital is so much better now, I haven’t felt this good about it in years, several years, I love that we don’t have to watch all that mob stuff anymore, It’s the gangsters that took away all the viewers and brought the ratings down where it was almost cancelled, the one life to live fans helped to save general hospital by refusing to watch the revolution and now Gaa, general hospital will be moving to One life to lives 2 O’clock hour, I think the negative fans who hate the crossovers should be thanking their lucky stars that we helped to save gh, I have watched all the abc soaps since day one and I love where general hospital is going now, it’s watchable.

Gh has been much better..Glad there is no longer those mob gangster stories. People that don’t like this well you can’t please everyone..And I am a HAPPY CAMPER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To mke it complete we need OLTL & GH back to back AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gina… I am very curious where your information is coming from, and how you can feel that Ron C. is destroying characters when you openly admit you don’t watch the show.

I watched OLTL for over 30 years, and yes, Todd Manning seems a bit softer, we have to remember that this “Todd Manning” was held hostage for over 7 years by his mother, so perhaps its more a character growing, rather than being destroyed by the writer.

If you are not watching the show, I really don’t see how your opinion matters at all and wonder at your purpose of even posting here. I am a OLTL transplant to GH and quite frankly, it sucked when I started watching. It is pretty awesome these days. Maybe if you pulled your head out of the past and gave it a look, you might have a different perspective. Just saying…

I actually feel like the writing has improved the characters. I feel like the previous writers spent years ruining them and we are finally getting them back. I know a lot of viewers that stopped watching, but have recently come back. Keep up the good work.

I am a LONG time viewer of both GH and OLTL. Gina and Karen, I respectfully disagree. First, the characters from OLTL that are currently on GH are NOT acting different from when they were on OLTL. (Can’t speak to how you ‘remember’ them Gina) RC did a fantastic job and he did not destroy anything. The ratings when they went off the air were through the roof! And Karen, we all have an adjustment when a new character is introduced – whether they were a character on another show or not. Not one GH character has been ‘hurt’ by RC or the OLTL characters.

        July 30, 2012 at 10:04 am

I am not directly responding to any one person here, but GH characters have been changed. They are not true to the character in other words. For example, Jason and Sam. Jason and Sam are not the people they are being written as now. Jason would’ve NEVER not supported Sam in the pregnancy and Sam would’ve never turned to anyone else over Jason. Elizabeth use to care more about her children and now they make her out to be a man chasing slut. That is not her. Others like Spinelli and Luke have changed for the good, but their changes have been gradual and not so completely out of character. Spinelli needed to get a backbone and stand up to Maxie even though they belong together. The thing about Luke is that he has always been unpredictable so we expect anything from him, but changing characters like Jason, Sam, and Elizabeth that have always had specific qualities is not a good thing to viewers. About the only thing I am not enjoying about GH is the Jason and Sam storyline, but the rest has been awesome. Just don’t destroy couples that you know are strong together. There are some couples, Luke and Tracy is one example, that you know will always have problems, but there are some that you know will fight for their marriages, like Jason and Sam, Patrick and Robin, Dante and Lulu. These characters have “established” personalities that they would not change so drastically.

      • CTwildheart

        July 30, 2012 at 11:33 am

Missy I believe the ‘changes’ in Jason and Sam you cite were done slowly and are situational. The fact that they are both agonizing over their recent choices alludes to their discomfort. Elizabeth was a swearing, smoking, boy-chasing teen when she first came to Port Charles…after suffering a serious loss, many people act in ways that are unlikely. Some revert to old ways. Just pointing out that Liz wasn’t always this holier than thou mother people seem to think she is.
TPTB will never keep a couple happy for too long – they don’t believe you can tell good story without some kind of discord.

I think that the combination of gh and one live to live actors has given new life to gh andit is revolutionary to combine soaps like this !!!!! It is all fantastic and anyone that does not watch the show or does not agree with the characters on gh is missing history in the making!!!!!

      • David

        July 31, 2012 at 8:21 pm

If folks expect things to remain the same; especially the storylines and characters, GH should have been cancelled but it was saved and to my chagrin at the expense of OLTL. So, fans have complained about the mob storylines or this character or the other has changed. Of course it did because it had too.

Did you think Jason and Sam were going to stay together forever without being broken up? I thought all the twists and turns are interesting and unlike others, I prefer Sam with McBain. They were hot on Port Charles. Can’t wait until Halloween and the writer put them in vampire constumes! If no one sees it, Carly will pair with Todd. How that eventually happens sans Johnny, let me know! Elizabeth was fired and we got her back so we can give constructive criticism but don’t complain; prior to Frank and Ron, she was gravitating to Patrick — that was too predicitablle. The girl’s MOM, Alexis, needs love in the afternoon. I have enjoyed Heather, Michael and Star’s budding relationship, TJ and Molly’s puppy love, and Kate’s progeny is getting a new interesting twist in his storyline with Christina — I still don’t like her. New Kate does better as Connie.

The downside is I don’t like the rehash of OLTL storylines. This DSomethingD is better but so TIRED of it. The babyswitch is watchable due to Heatherantics and Toddmachinations! And the electroshock therapy reminds me of OLTL’s darkside!

Characters like Jason Sonny and Carly “mob element” is what almost tanked GH. I know I stopped watching GH when I saw basiclly three people and no hospital. Elizabeth to me has always been a weak character. Jason and Sam when I would watch GH put me to sleep. JMO The actors that play Sonny and Jason have as much enegy as a sleepin dog and overexposed. Although seeing Sonny alot less has soften to me…a little. Lol Jason needs to exit withs a quickness cause the Liason/Jasam wars have grown stale. The rest have stayed true to character. FV is doing a great job bring back vets that made this soap golden. RC writng of RH/Todd is too soft and a little out of character for him. It keeps him as a one demensional and have not seen that classic Todd that you see when he interacts with the likes of Vicki/Ericka S

I have to disagree here. GH has always been my fav of the three ABC soaps all of which I watched for over 30 years. The writing on GH is so much better recently. There was a period at the end of last year/beginning of this year where I did more FF than viewing. That is not the case now. Characters evolve just people do in real life and I think the introduction of OLTL characters has been great. I have always loved it when the shows did crossovers. I miss OLTL and AMC dearly (thankfully, for right now anyway, I can watch old epi’s on SoapNet). But turning my back on GH will not bring them back, it will only enure another soap cancellation. This is a view that I would have taken no matter which soap remained, because I loved them all. IMO FV and RC are doing an awesome job just as they did on OLTL.

I would love to OLTL back. I watched OLTL and GH for so many years I can’t remember not watching them. I am glad to see the OLTL actors on GH. I hope ABC makes the right decission and bring OLTL back so I can get back to watching ABC again. I watch GH and Castle — nothing else on ABC.

You asked TOUGH questions Michael! Even the phrasing you chose was, to steal a phrase she used, firing on all cylinders! Kudos to you! She answered with the typical head honcho “everything’s a peach….love, flowers and candy rainbows” answers but you were on top of it all.

You are a great voice for us fans Michael! You say what we want to say and ask what we want to ask. Thank you!

      July 31, 2012 at 4:46 pm

I agree! Michael, you asked all the difficult and important questions, and we thank you for that. I just can’t bring myself to believe much of anything these execs say anymore. I got the feeling that , yes, they are behind GH right now, but maybe for only another year. Ms. Dummer gave the usual vague answers, talking about boosting ratings and deciding what to do with AMC and OLTL when the rights to them revert back to ABC. She spoke a couple of times about not looking back, and that says to me that AMC and OLTL are never coming back, and that GH is on borrowed time. I fervently hope I’m wrong; GH has never been so good as it is now,! As a fan of all three ABC soaps since the beginning, nothing would make me happier than for GH to continue on for years and for something to be done about resurrecting the other two soaps. I just don’t trust anything that comes from ABC/D and I will continue to boycott their network, except for GH, forever if that’s what it comes down to.

Let me say this interview has definitely given me hope for GH. I love that Vicki is a fan! One thing I wish you had asked is trying to keep soapnet. It seems with all the support now for GH that trying to get soapnet back would be great.

Thank you so much for this interview, Michael! You have gone to the heart of the matter interviewing Ms Dummer and it is so appreciated! Ms Dummer has no track record with fans but if she is sincere in her support of GH, perhaps when rights to AMC and OLTL are returned she may see the value in allowing those stories to pick up and continue in some capacity somewhere. Thank you Ms Dummer for being the first executive I have heard give GH and its actors the respect they deserve! I know it raised my respect for Ms Dummer.

I’ll take this interview with a grain of salt. This woman’s past experience is all about reality TV shows. I think she’s just trying to save face by putting all the blame on Brian Frons.

And even if she’s indeed in support of GH, what good does it make if Sweeney and the rest of Dummer’s bosses all want GH gone? I’m not necessarily saying that Mrs.Dummer is lying. But ABC has lied to us before. So I prefer to stay on my guard.

Realistically speaking, I don’t believe that AMC and OLTL will ever come back as TV shows. But I’ll be somewhat satisfied if Dummer can at least give us some sort of a reunion movie so that AMC and OLTL get the proper endings that they were supposed to get before Prospect Park came and screwed things around. Of course, I want ABC to keep GH and never cancel it. ABC has taken two soaps away from us, the least they can do is at least leave us GH.

    • Susan

      July 30, 2012 at 5:38 am

      I agree Heather… I feel Ms. Dummer’s answers are a bunch of fluff…

While I am no fan of Frons, people seem to forget (or perhaps they don’t know) he only did what his bosses told him to do! Ms. Dummer could be GH’s biggest fan, but that’s not going to keep it safe when her bosses make the decision to ax it!

      I don’t trust ABC… at all… but, time will tell…

    • Laurel

      July 30, 2012 at 8:20 am

I totally agree Heather. I miss AMC and OLTL, if there would be a reunion movie I will be there with bells on. It is still amazing to me that with such a strong following these shows were axed. I pray that we will have GH forever!

Well I hope Vicki’s Mom and Dad love JaSam and want the Morgan family reunited! It’s way overdue now for Sam and Jason to hold their son! August 2, 2012 at 5:50 pm

Sandra, I totally agree with you. I love Jason & Sam and understand that the writers don’t believe in “happy ever after”, however, this couple has been through so much more than any other couple on GH. The very least they can do for the fans is give them their baby back. It’s going on 3 months, this baby swap storyline is dragging.

I do not agree with RC that love and romance equals sleazy cheating scenes. Here’s an idea, try having a few married couples on GH that were true to each other, Dante/Lulu, Jason/Sam. (I was going to add in other couples, but realized there aren’t any other married couples left on GH).

I agree with the idea of bringing in some OLTL actors, to bring in their fans, however, they should not be getting more air time than GH veteran actors.

When the fans of the show tell the writers they don’t recognize the characters or that the characters are doing things that they would not normally do, the writers need to listen. Hopefully, Ms. Dummer is listening and will prove to the fans that we can trust ABC executives again.

Michael, as always, another great interview.

        August 1, 2012 at 2:50 pm

I’m not agreeing with you but I do understand the need for the OLTL cast to be back with us. I wish that could be, but unless they are willing to allow the OLTL back on the air this dream may not come to pass. I’m a fan of GH and will always be a fan of OLTL. I want John McBain and Natalie to be together on GH. We have been cheated out of a reunion with this couple, this has dragged on for months. The DNA results that were false, the almost marriage, the cheating and lies, the list can go on and on. The writer’s never gave us the ending we wanted for this couple, the correct closure and the one they have written is unbelieving and lets just say dumb, so I do understand. That’s the best they could write for this beloved couple. You just want something of our beloved OLTL to hold on to and I feel the same. We have some of it with GH but its not the same, but what else can you do. Just appreciate and hope it gets better, if not hey remember we the fans determine how long a program stays on the air, don’t watch and the ratings will drop for sure. But know that if you do and others follow like we did with the Chew, then we lose another wonderful soap and we dont really want that either. Hopefully the writer’s will listen to us this time. Keep OLTL alive, if only in your heart and mind, and let GH continue in it’s improving the quality of the cast and soap. Don’t forget OLTL!!!

If us OLTL fans will never get the show back, i agree, please bring Vicki, David and Dorian, and Natalie to GH. With Star having had her tragedies it is only right that Aunt Dorian comes to help her–very easy to write her in. And if Dorian comes on, of course so does her husband David. Can you imagine David and Dorian on GH? Dorian could have all the cat fights with the other divas in the storyline of GH< the other matriarchs. David with—well, any other character is gold.
Natalies comes on in true red head fashion, "What the h… are you doing with my man, bit……!" She can create some tension with John and Sam (who really does not belong with him). Natalie can get a job on the police force their and has come to get her man back. Do you really think Natalie wouldn't fight for John, come on, writers.
So there is how the writers can easily bring on Natalie, Dorian, David. Vicki comes because she is concerned also about Star and also, because she is loyal, concerned about Todd.
Let's do it Ron and Frank.
As a GH fan I am really trying to like the show, but it lacks those vibrant characters, those full of life characters like David, Dorian, Natalie.

I also am very excited about the fall lineup………on ANY network except ABC. I will not be pacified by a few OLTL characters crossing over to GH. ABC does not exist for me anymore period. I have tried to get into GH, just not happening. The OLTL characters might look the same, but they are different. Todd, for instance, when would he EVER allow Heather to blackmail him??? Sorry, but I am finished with ABC including GH.

I don’t trust anyone at ABC…they are notorious liars, so I’ll wait for their actions before I believe they support the soaps. BUT, I for one am happy to see the OLTLers on GH. I think it makes GH more fresh and dynamic and it’s great to see even a few One Lifers every day. I actually think their characterizations are more on the mark than they were by the end of OLTL to be honest. BTW, Todd let Gabrielle blackmail him during the first DBL, so I think it is completely in line with his character and even a nod to history for him to be blackmailed by Heather.

I am glad and grateful that the genre of daytime soaps is currently not being taken away from ABC but as a very longtime fan of ABC shows, I am at a loss on how they’re treating us OLTL fans. They kill Hope! And Cole! They make me wait until the very end of the show for John and Natalie to get back together and now they throw in that John’s father, who was the most upstanding guy John has ever knoww, couldn’t keep his pants on and had an affair? Now John is fooling around with Sam? I have decided to end my reign of being the most devoted GH fan in my group of friends because I can no longer take the bittersweet happiness I felt at the end of OLTL being dashed and trampled am glad that GH is continuing for those who can stick with it. I no longer can’t. Maybe when they return to their senses and stop bashing us OLTL fans, then I might return.

Don’t give up so easy, where is the OLTL fight? Its us fans who made it so that the Chew rating went down. ABC needs us and the shows that they do have on are not that good I must say. I don’t know if this Ms. Drummer is telling the truth or she’s just shoving #### but it doesn’t matter. We want to keep OLTL alive and only the fans can do that and the fight must continue with your voice. Your words have power don’t think they don’t and ABC needs you even if they don’t say it or think it. GH and can only get better with us the OLTL viewer along with the GH viewers to stand together. Some of our cast is on GH and thats great and others may follow I pray, but some is better than none. Lets see if she is telling the truth, or just talking loud and saying nothing. I would like OLTL back on the air like you, or even some of the other cast on GH. They can even create another soap title if they like with the OLTL cast members I would love that as well. But don’t give up! This is just the beginning and we the fans of OLTL and some of GH need you.

Great interview, Michael! Thank you for doing it, and for asking the tough questions.

I like what Ms. Drummer had to say about GH, and it all sounds nice on paper. But actions speak louder than words, and we’ll see what the future holds. I’m cautiously optimistic, and very thrilled that GH will be around to celebrate its 50th Anniversary. I think the fact that they thought enough of GH to include it on their network press tour is a great sign.

I miss OLTL too and not so much AMC it was ok, but I was more interested in the characters on OLTL. I hope it will live in some form, whether another soap or cast on GH. Something is better than nothing. It’s true OLTL left alot of loose ends and no closures. Writer’s seem as if they just didn’t know what to write or just didnt care. Just like a lost body at sea, no closure. So many fans loved this soap they need to fix this.

Is like she said the decision to take AMC and OLTL off the air was done by Brian Frons. That’s why he not there in ABC any more. I think she trying to do the best job she can. So i think we should give her a chance and see what happens. OLTL was my favorite and i miss the show. But is been to long. If they was going to put in on the air, it would had been on by now.

      July 30, 2012 at 4:08 am

As she stated in her interview, Prospect Park still has the rights to OLTL so right now they couldn’t put it back on if they wanted to. I appreciate what she said but I am certainly not going to believe it until I see it. ABC has shown so much disrespect to us viewers and even though she had nothing to do with it, it is going to be up to her to make things right. Is she really willing to or not? I cannot see how people can watch the Chew for any length of time day in and day out. If it has so much energy and is so good, then why did Mr. Lee has the journalists to push it? Reality shows don’t last 43 or more years and keep the support of the viewers like soaps and dramas do. A good business doesn’t just think of the short-term savings but what would work the best in the long run. As far as the viewers being mean to her, I say, fix the problem and it will stop happening. She is there to fix what Frons messed up and until she does, the viewers aren’t and shouldn’t stop voicing their disappointment in ABC. All I watch on ABC is GH and my local news and until ABC decides to respect us viewers, that is the way it will stay. No Chew and no Katie for me at all!!

    • Nancy

ABC can’t touch the show till January when the rights go back to them (from Prospect Park), but to be honest unless they can help get the ratings of GH up they are only giving it till thier 50th anniversary, so as much as I love OLTL I don’t expect to see it on network tv again….Maybe a legitimate internet company will pick it up…and actually, the problem with PP was the funding..As deep as ABC’s pockets are why didn’t they help this young company get the financing?

Call me a cynic, but I don’t believe anything that comes from an exec at ABC. They destroyed daytime television by cancelling two excellent soaps. To hear her say that the Chew was a good replacement really makes me wonder. I have my fingers crossed for GH’s future. I know I’ll be watching.

    July 29, 2012 at 10:48 pm

I’m going to keep my rose colored glasses on for awhile. Michael thanks for asking the tough questions and after hearing the responses I think GH will be on for awhile longer. We all just need to keep watching. I’ve watched GH for 40 some odd years. Characters come and go. Some you wish wouldn’t some you were glad they left. In the old days we didn’t have the instant access to everyone’s life, so we never really knew why they left. We didn’t have spoiler alerts either, it was truly just wait and see what happens. I think we need to do that now.

  24. Jane

I don’t trust anyone at ABC/D. My favorite always was and will continue to be OLTL. I don’t think that Vicki had anything to do with the cancelations but Anne Sweeney and Robert Iger are still there. So I don’t think GH is safe. If they can find something that clicks during OLTL’S TIMESLOT, GH will be gone. All I know is my tv isn’t tuned to ABC anymore.

    • barbara t. Loves one life to live

I don’t trust her either. Several times a day I go to abc Contact, and I have been leaving comments about the destruction of their daytime programming ever day, I have also complained to them that they need to be vocal about what they are going to do with general Hospital because we the fans have a right to know, are they or aren’t they cancelling General Hospital? Maybe this is another way to shut us up, It’s not going to work, Not for me, I will continue to boycott abc till they bring back One life to live, In the mean time I don’t believe a word that woman says, she is just another mouthpiece that works for a greedy network That doesn’t care about the soap fans, Just because they are keeping GENERAL HOSPITAL doesn’t mean I will tune into the chew or any other garbage show they try to throw at us.

I agree, they did all these grea tpromos and things with GL and OLTL and acted as if they were going to go on forever, and canceled them both in a heartbeat. I hope GH goes on forever, but I wouldn’t bet the ranch on it. I bet too much on other ones to survive as the powers that be acted then as if they would, and we know what happened.

    July 29, 2012 at 11:22 pm

Ultimately Vickki Dummer will have to answer to Anne Sweeney who is the Disney/ABC executive that originally “gave the order” that all three soaps be canceled. I want to believe Ms. Dummer has GH’s best interest (along with the wonderful cast and crew) at heart. I also would guess that Anne Sweeney and Robert Iger at the top of the tree can give the order whenever they choose to simply end the show and not lose a nights sleep over the jobs lost or the fans’ heartbreak. It sickens me that even with a repreive, good ratings and revenues up, GH will still have a sword hanging over it, waiting to fall. I wouldn’t blame Ms. Dummer. Should the order come, tthe suits above her will get the angry e-mails from myself and others who will have been betrayed once again. I pray it doesn’t happen. But I’ll keep my e-mail at the ready to fire off if it does.

Yes, I feel some better, but lets just say “For the moment.” What I was wondering; Would ABC consider in putting AMC and OLTL on a 30 min program like the soaps used to have?
It would take less money to keep going and I think definately satisfy the viewer. 30 min is better then nothing.OLTL was high in the ratings I don’t understand why they cancelled it as it was doing great and then replace it with , lets just say bad decisions!
I am 100% for 30 min soaps of AMC and OLTL at least it would give us back some happiness.

I get the feeling that the 50th Anniversary is going to be the swan song for GH…it just feels that way after reading this interview. And I have to disagree with the comment that the chew is firing on all pistons…whenever i’ve seen it -which is only for a second if i’m changing the channel- it is so painful to watch, the cast is obnoxious, and the whole thing just reeks like garbage. I hope this Vicki Dummer can finally turn abc daytime around, but I have a feeling without AMC and OLTL, they are doomed!

    • Jane

      July 30, 2012 at 11:47 am

I agree totally. I think ABC/D is waiting until GH has their 50th and then it will be gone. Sounds like something Sweeney and Iger would do. They care absolutely nothing about lost jobs and totally devastated fans. I will never forgive them for killing our soaps. That’s why none of my tvs are tuned to ABC or Disney.

    Great questions.

As-for Dummer, I’m on the fence. While I truly want to buy-into her seemingly earnest, sincere replies, I’m wary of all network execs, especially those working with soaps. I’m surprised Dummer didn’t tell us ABC/D is already planning for GH’s centennial in 2063.

As a longtime CBS viewer, I can tell you we went through the exact same dog-and-pony show with the CBS Daytime VP’s, including Barbara Bloom, Lucy Johnson and Michael Brockman. And lest we forget the many Procter & Gamble suits. They always talked out of two-sides of their mouths, assuring us Guiding Light and As The World Turns were viable and safe. Where are those soaps now?

The networks must coach these execs to walk-the-walk and talk-the-talk, and no deviation is permitted. The ultimate decision to cancel a soap is done at a much-higher corporate level. Dummer and Valentini are merely soliders, marching to the parade music.

I really didn’t want this post sound so negative, and as I re-read it, I’m saying UGH! Singing Kumbaya here; ABC/D loves GH and its fans, and we’ll have our show for at least another 50 years!!~~~

Don’t like what she said about the Spew, but I hope that if she can show that GH can stay on the air, then maybe she can go a little further by getting rid of the Spew, as well as GAA, and get AMC and OLTL back on the air.

I take everything with a grain of salt with a wait and see attitude. Meanwhile I enjoy each and every epi of GH. I was also a big OTL fan and I think everyone is working hard at melding in the OLTL characters. I will just never understand how a true GH fan can abandon it b/c they are not getting their way on some s/ls at the very moment they want it. and have some patience. Support GH.

sorry, ABC has proven that they lie and will say anything to make the soap viewers back off of the save the soaps campaign.. I don’t believe a word that she says. ABC/Disney have made it very clear that they don’t want soap operas in the daytime lineup anymore and it sadly won’t be too long before General Hospital sees the axe…hopefully way after their big anniversary. Personally , we are on major overkill with the talk shows etc and the right decision would be to bring back the soaps. Nice try ABC, but not buying your latest lies

What a great interview. I have to say the BEST one I have ever read from the execs. She did not speak like others who put soaps at the bottom of the food chain, and I thank her for that. Also thank you Michael for bringing us such a great interview. Hopefully this interview will generate some nice emails and fans will give her a chance before crucifying her. I for one am willing to give her a chance, while continuing to show support for the entire genre.

Thank you Michael for this interview w/Vicki. I think she’s a lovely person doing her job. I wish someone could give us fans assurance that the show will go on beyond April 2013. I watched GH back in the Luke & Laura glory days, and now I’m back. Had never watched a day of Sonny or Jason Morgan, and now I’m loving it more than ever. Of course having Todd Manning kicking butt is a good reason! I hope to hear soon that GH will continue beyond April 2013, I think more people would tune back in and invest if they knew the show wasn’t going to be yanked away.

So far, I like her. She knows what went wrong under Frons and I don’t think she wants to make the same mistakes.

    July 30, 2012 at 4:52 am

Thanks, Michael! The people above her are the ones that ultimately made the decision about AMC and OLTL so she really has no say in the end. I was a huge fan of OLTL. I lost interest in GH years ago. It really makes me sad that It was the number one soap was still cancelled for a show that did terrible in focus groups no less. I do not trust ABC and I don’t watch the network. I could be wrong but I think OLTL showed higher numbers the last year than GH is doing now. I don’t wish GH to be cancelled but I have little faith in ABC or any of their executives.

It *sounds* good. She certainly is saying all the right things. It’s what is unspoken that worries me. “We are supportive of this genre. We want to see it continue and succeed [FOR NOW]. ” (Brackets mine.) It hangs in the air throughout every interview with TPTB at ABC. I’ve seen them do a 180 before when we’ve let our guard down. Thanks for the interview and asking all the hard questions but I’ll believe it when I see it. FOR NOW, as far as I’m concerned, the boycott is still ON!!

The demise of AMC was engineered by tptb in their deliberate hiring of writers who helped get other shows canceled. That’s my real belief. That’s why OLTL was so good-Frons wasn’t micromanaging it. Well, no matter. What’s done is done. I hope Ms. Dummer is sincere, and that GH will be around for a while. I really do. I’ll support GH as long as it’s on, and be glad that some of my wonderful friends from other shows are there-John McBain, Starr and her dad. Now the wonderful Robin Mattson and Fiona Hughes! Fabulous. But I’m not going to deny that I am suspicious. So, we’ll see. And I’m sorry Ms. Dummer is getting the ugly emails that should be reserved for Frons and SweeneyTodd. The anger runs deep.

The people have no say at all, I wonder if ABC makes up their own numbers for the soaps and put what they want and just tell us the ratings are down ,just so they add the shows they want ,try to force us to watch what they want ,it is their network. not me I will only watch GH and then turn the TV off.

All I hears was Blah Blah Blah.Lets give gh at least a 50th aniversary but nothing pass that.Lets ignore the statement that Anne sweeney did say she wanted daytime scripted shows gone. Was it not predicted that Frons would be let go to take the blame. Can blame Frons for bringing dowm AMC’s ratings but Agnes came back and it was going up in ratings again.Since there is a ae discremination on network ratings does she wanna talk about her parents are even counted in ratings? She brags about the chew but doesn’rt mention they gave a thief ajob who skimmed hos workers of 5.35 millions dollars in tip.He should not even have a right to be on Tv.He needs to bathe to.That greasy hair is gross. This is what they took soaps off for?Fithy dirty thief.

She did not answer any questions about putting AMC or OLTL back on the air or selling the rights back. And if everyone at ABC are such big soap fans were was their outrage when they were cancelled. Really Ms. Drummer you do not sound sincere you sound like a politician.

    July 30, 2012 at 6:18 am

Well the show has been getting better, but I notice they are still doing the pets. If this woman is putting her personal imput in as to what she likes I don’t think it will help ratings. Every one likes different characters and a lot of people left because these very actors who were invited to this TCA have been front and center for too long on the show. I think a better way to bring back viewers is to show that the show is an ensemble cast and that their is no favorite characters, couples or actos. So far they have failed to show that the partiality is not there.

I shall be cautiously optimistic in regards to everything I’ve read so far. It’s difficult these years to keep a good daytime schedule due to the internet and the many different ways you can see the shows that take away from ratings and affect advertising revenue. So I understand the need for smaller budget shows, it doesn’t necessarily mean I like it but I do understand. As a long time General Hospital viewer, I can’t say I’m pleased with the direction of the show lately but as in all soaps, there is always bad with the good. I’m just pleased GH remains in the daytime line-up. It would be a shame to lose a show that will be celebrating 50 years on air in April. I don’t believe there are many shows, daytime or primetime, that could claim such a rich history. As for OLTL and AMC coming back, I think it’s safe to say that Katie’s new show has their budget. I’m not expecting a return anytime soon. But it was a good interview and I’m glad the new Exec at least understands how important daytime and especially GH is to the viewers.

Hoping GH is on for many years but doubt that it will. I did not watch OLTL but I’m loving Roger Howarth on GH. I became a hugh fan from his portrayal of Paul of ATWT’S. He is such a cutie and I love his facial expressions when he gets really angry. The network better pay attention to the soap fans out there or they will lose viewers for the rest of their lineup. Be aware the soap fans are very vocal. Thanks!!

    July 30, 2012 at 8:50 am

I’m more optimistic then I have in a while. That is what I wanted. I see much better s/l’s and adjustment of s/l’s. It has needed serious help for just over 4 yrs. It was tuff to stay with GH and the past s/l’s during that time. But I just couldn’t leave because of watching for so long during my life and events. I’m now able to relax again and not be so angry with the s/l’s and movement or lack of screen time of some that were backshelved. They have lots of talent but the scripts were agenda driven and not really doing anything to save GH. I now have renewed hope for my fav’s and s/l’s to be better quailty and ratings improve.

Thank you Michael for asking the tough questions! 🙂
This article does make me feel just a tiny smidge better. But not more than that. I have no ill feelings toward Vicki Drummer – but I am cautious about believing what she says. Unfortunately, the past year and a half of ABC/D’s lies have taken its toll. Hopefully her actions will continue to support the soap opera genre and my confidence and trust in her will grow…

She is a lot better then her predecessor but no . Unless Katie is an epic fail which it probably will be . I do not see her has a lobbyist to bring back OLTL . Who knows though she seems like a smart lady who actually cares about the ratings

Thanks for a great interview Michael. I too, as many of you stated above, am hopeful for the future of GH, and Ms. Dummer seems to be behind it. I will really feel extremely optimistic when GH stays on the air beyond their 50th Anniversary in April. Once we pass that wonderful milestone, and are still seeing GH each day on ABC, then I will totally believe ABC Daytime is in favor of keeping GH. On another note, while I look forward to Jason and Sam reuniting and finding happiness together again, I am loving all of the storylines and the direction GH is headed in. I also love the infusion of old characters coming back, as well as the OLTL characters coming onto the canvas. Love John, Starr and Todd on GH. Much good luck to all those involved with keeping GH on the air.

    July 30, 2012 at 9:13 am

Thanks Micheal for doing you getting this interview for us; I notice Ms. Drummer isn’t like the previous Head of Daytime, a media whore…she seems to be low key & she’s sounding good special thanks to her Mom and Dad for being soap fans.

However the bottom line its ABCDisney’s decision … her boss and they can pull the plug whenever…Again I’ve bought into the hype and was sorely disappointed so I’m taking a wait/see approach. As for OLTL crossovers, I notice they have no trouble getting air but its a struggle for some of the GH characters I like… I’d like GH characters to be marketed/promoed & brand the show as well as their beloved crossovers that’s all I’m saying.

  60. Barb Harnedy

    July 30, 2012 at 9:23 am

I hope her parents are also fans of Dante & Lulu on GH….because all of us who fell in love with this couple 3 yrs ago would like an actual story written for them that shows all the “new” GH watchers WHY we fell in love with them. Dom Zamprogna and Julie Berman are awesome actors. The show as a whole right now is MUCH better than it has been in a very long while, but like many are saying, I don’t think I will ever trust anything that comes out of the mouths of ABC execs. Thanks Michael for asking a lot of hard questions. I wish you had asked her if ABC will sell back the rights to AMC and OLTL when ABC regains control of those rights? Again, the show is much better now than it was a year ago….that’s for sure, but if they keep on bringing in new charcters from OLTL and don’t give stories to fan favorite like Dante & Lulu, I will still be disappointed. But the bottom line is we have to keep the show on the air to see any of our favorite characters. I don’t like her mentioning the 50th anniversary so many times….because it seems to me that’s as far ahead as ABC is planning right now, and it would break my heart to see them reach 50 yrs and then get the axe!!

I too am a huge GH fan, and think that it has been the greatest it’s ever been in a long long time. As a fan I stuck with them and quite francly I was getting unhappy with it becoming all about the mob. Port Charles PD was looking pretty lame! Why dumb down Mac? It was turning into the Sonny and Carly show and who in their right frame of mind wanted to keep listen to Carly shriek her way through life? So Bravo!! Bravo!! Thank you for merging Llanview and Port Charles. Thank you for makin Anna the wonderfully smart, sexy bad @ss she is!! Ms. Drummer said all the right things. But actions speak louder. I did find it strange she mentioned GH’s 50th anniversary and nothing about after that. Also she doesn’t like that some of the soap fans have been mean. Poor Ms. Drummer. Get over yourself. I don’t trust ABCD and will never watch the Spew or the Oprah wannabe. Bring back AMC and OLTL!

    • Christy

      August 2, 2012 at 5:14 pm

I think it was so funny how Ms. Drummer acts like she is the victim after receiving so many angry emails. Did she ever stop to think that maybe us fans are the victims?

  67. Robert in Jersey City

    July 30, 2012 at 11:13 am

Well, she said all the right things, actions speak louder than words. Who knows what ABC will do in a year? The rights come back AND GH turns 50. Just have to wait and see. Maybe they’ve picked up our “boycott”…. She seems nicer than Frons, that’s for sure. Wait and see and enjoy the year we have left with GH.

But in my gut, it’s over. ABC doesn’t give a lick about the fans….Katie took ALL the daytime money for herself….it’s just done. I hope Katie does as well as OWN. Sorry, but you bumped a soap. Plain as that.

    • Christy

      August 2, 2012 at 5:17 pm

I’m really baffled by how Katie Couric doesn’t seem in the least bit scared that her show is going to tank after what ABC did to OLTL and AMC. I would be shaking in my boots right about now with all of those rabid soap fans LOL.

  68. Angie U

    July 30, 2012 at 12:10 pm

I love what RC & FV are doing with GH it is best it has been in years. I have watched 40+ years and also watched OLTL that long. I think Todd & John McBain are even better on GH than they were before. I cannot understand why some fans want to complain if everything doesn’t go their way. I stick with it & supprort no mattert if it’s written way I want. I want soaps to stay on so I’m going to support them. Started watching soaps on other networks to support genre. I will not watch Spew, GAA or Katie Who. They should put OLTL back on if they want a successful daytime lineup. Vikki is saying the write thing but fear it is more spin from ABC. I think they are hedging their bets right now because GH is doing better than any of their other afternoon shows & they can’t afford to cancel it right now & alienate more viewers. Just hoping for best.

If ABC wants to know how well soaps do let them see the viewing numbers for Dallas on TNT. If I remember correctly it was over 5 million viewers. Dallas is a soap too, even though it is on in the evenings.

Well done, Michael. Now if you could get ABC interested in reviving and producing AMC and OLTL in Atlanta, an affordable major city of 6 million people only 2 hours away from NYC by plane, we might get our full line up back. Georgia’s 30% tax rebates make filming in The ATL very attractive–many shows are based there, including Emmy-nominated The Walking Dead. Book Agnes Nixon a suite at The Artmore Hotel and let’s bring these shows back in elegant southern style!

    • Christy

Thank you Michael for a wonderful interview… as for Ms. Dummer she, in my opinion, evaded many of the questions you asked about AMC and OLTL returning to the air on ABC by dancing around them. As for GH I am cautiously optimistic. Like many other soap fans we have been lied to by ABC execs and it simply makes it hard to trust any of them. Her interview leads me to believe that GH will be around at least until their 50th anniversary celebration in April and that ABC promo dept is advertising GH to try and get their numbers up and if that along with their time change improves the numbers then they may get to stay. However, it also may hinge on how poorly Katie Couric’s numbers are as well. Let’s not forget she is very boring herself and who wants to watch her in the middle of the afternoon? I certainly won’t be doing that myself. Too many other things to watch or do. Hope that everyone else can say the same.
GH is putting out some of the best shows it has written in years with Ron and Frank. I am loving them. As a long time GH viewer I have many shows to compare with since I have watched when it was black and white with Jesse and Phil Brewer :). I love that we are seeing more hospital action and love in the afternoon. I also love that the couples are not always happy. Monica and Alan Q had their affairs… remember Monica and Rick while he was married to Leslie? I do? Alan and Susan while he was married to Moncia? I could go on but there are too many to name. In the end they always worked it out and stayed together or got back together or re-married. LOL
    Enjoy your day

Thank you, Michael for this great interview. And thank you, Ms. Dummer, for being openly supportive of the wonderful soap genre. As a fan of not only GH but my wonderful OLTl and AMC, I want you to know that I will always work to try & get them restored to broadcast. YEah.. to bring back lapesed viewers Vicki.. you need to get Spencers and Scorpios front and center. Get Genie when JFP does the moronic thing and dismisses her from YnR. Stop the mobsters with a heart of gold junk. Play the families that we know ad care about!! Push the air hogs of the whole last decade, as the GH numbers crashed and burned, to the side.

One can only hope that she is sincere in what she says. However we have been lied to before. I think time will tell. I also don’t like the fact that she just wants to leave Amc and oltl in the past. Sounds like she really has no plans for them. Which is just a travesty

    July 30, 2012 at 6:42 pm

First of all, “One Life To Live” fans want their soap back! We are NOT interested in any of the programs that have been put on ABC to replace them. “The Chew” sucks to high Heaven (everyone I know who loved our soaps won’t watch it and neither will our friends) and we refuse to watch “Katie” and ANY other show that’s meant to take the place of our soaps. Please reconsider putting OLTL and AMC back on the air OR AT LEAST relinquishing the rights to them and selling them back to Agnes Nixon so that she can find another network to air them. I, for one, will not watch ABC (except for “General Hospital”) and I’m thinking about finding a way to totally eliminate the network altogether if it’s not brought back. Every show that is put on as a replacement for the other shows that end up failing WILL FAIL ALSO! We’ll make sure of it because we WON’T watch and neither will our family and friends.

  80. annie b

    July 30, 2012 at 8:59 pm

I trust her support thru April. After that? I don’t believe anything ABC says anymore.

Their goal is to secure a loyal following for “Katie” which will follow directly after GH in most areas. Once they believe GH has served that purpose, they may decide they have no use for it anymore. Which sucks.

The one thing viewers can do is to not miss an episode of GH and introduce new fans to GH. We must support GH by helping to grow its ratings. NOW is the time.

  81. dominicsmythe

    July 30, 2012 at 9:19 pm

NO, michael, i don’t feel better. ms. drummer is okay but it sounds to me that GH could get cancelled any moment if rating don’t drastically improve. not just improve, but hit it out of the park. OLTL could not be saved despite ‘cartini’ — and it doesn’t sound like the network will ignore numbers.

    • Christy

      August 2, 2012 at 5:30 pm

Until ABC understands how to actually read the viewing numbers, such as people who DVR the soaps or watch it on Soap Net, they are going to keep finding different shows to replace all of the ones that fail. It will be a vicious circle.

I think AMC and OLTL fans need to give up the dream that those shows are ever coming back. There have been tons of soaps that have been canceled and none of those shows came back.

Instead of focusing their energy on an impossible fantasy, fans should focus their energy on an achievable goal: prevent GH from being canceled. After years of neglect and disrespect from ABC regarding daytime soaps, the current regime of Paul Lee and Vicki Dummer respect the soap genre. The fact that they picked up GH, used GH as a lead-in for Couric, and had a TCA panel for GH are just some examples of their support. But respect and support will only go so far. If the ratings for GH do not greatly improve, Lee and Dummer will have no other choice but to cancel GH and replace it with something that can bring in higher ratings. That’s how the TV business works: low ratings = cancellation, high ratings = renewal.

Instead of writing angry emails to ABC or posting bitter replies to interviews, fans should be writing, calling, facebooking, tweeting and doing whatever it takes to get friends, family members, ex-GH fans, and new fans to watch GH. ABC is giving GH the chance to reach its 50th anniversary. It is up to the fans to make sure GH reaches its 51st anniversary and beyond.

I agree a little, its not over yet. But i do agree that we fans of OLTL and GH need to come together and keep GH on the air. Stop watching the other ABC shows and programming and just stay with the soap GH. Until they take notice that we are serious about bringing OLTL back in some kind of form. Emails, tweeting, facebook and writing letters do make a difference. But the proof is in the puddle so they say. Lets hit them in their pockets. True low ratings no show including the present and any future shows they try to put on in replacing the soaps they removed. Higher ratings keep our GH on and with the possibility of a new soap with the characters from OLTL and maybe just maybe AMC for a 1/2 or an 1 hour for us. But lets not give up the fight, just don’t lose another soap either. Keep hope alive and faith strong.

OLTL and AMC will be back, in some form or another, as is already evident with the OLTL/GH hybrid. And all the commenting, and attention interviews and mainstream press articles get draws more attention. Paul Lee was caught WAY off guard with the OLTL and AMC questioning, and the top brass at Disney are finally realizing that they will not be able to keep ignoring the Soap Fans. With the VERY successful resurrection of Dallas, and the popularity of the OLTL characters on GH, there is MUCH to celebrate! For now, however, we need to keep the pressure on, keep commenting about the shows in as many forums as possible, and ensure that our voices are heard LOUD and CLEAR.

We are the customers, and the customers are NEVER wrong!

I am sure one of the reasons Brian Frons was removed from his position was in hopes that the fans would forgive ABC faster. I will never watch ABC until I see something happening with All my Children. I use to watch all 3 soaps. I gave up GH first because of the mob stories. I gave up OLTL when Jess started becoming Tess . That story was done with Viki. I think I have the names right. The thing is all the soaps could have been more successful with good writing and marketing. Lots of people are watching Dallas because it is marketed and written well. Let me know when All My Children returns or some of their characters come to GH. Never forget that ABC/Disney did what they wanted to do and now they have to figure out how to get us to watch these cheap shows. Does anyone know where Brian Frons is working? Is he still at Disney? Or did he gat paid so much for being the scapegoat that he never has to work again. As you can see, I am still mad ABC for taking off All My Children and always will be mad.

Wel dance around the tabe to me.Never mentioned Anne Sweeney is the one who cancelled the soaps and wanted all daytime scripted shows gone. She made the statement.Don’t like Frons neither but lets not lie about who really cancelled themThe ratings are there but remember MS.Dummer alot are not even allowed to be counted because you all discreminate on ages. With outdated neilsen giving the 18 to 34 year old the majority of boxes all there doing is trying to please that age group not the total veiwers.M they know miilions of soap fans are not counted everyday because age discremintion and they know it.I hope a law suit occurs over age dimscreation. We the ones that watch more tv,are more secure in speeding, double dip spend for our children and grandchildren ARE NOT counted in ratings. Why are you not mentioning passed gh’s 50th?

Why are some people typing Drummer instead of Dummer???? The name suits her perfectly for continuing the crap that’s going on GH.

Dave, being nasty to the Exec that is keeping GH on the air right now is not going to get us anywhere!

      August 8, 2012 at 11:03 am

I agree Dave, GH has lost it’s mojo, the show is boring and only caters to a certain type of audience. We are still living in the world according to????.

I have read everyone’s messages and in some form agree with some and not with others. No I don’t trust Ms. Drummer and only time will tell if she is lying to us. But for now it is, what it is and I will continue on NOT watching ABC shows and programming until they do something to bring back OLTL in some form. Whether renaming it and starting a new soap, putting it on for 1/2 of an hour, finding another station that is willing to televise OLTL. Whatever it takes to make it happen. I’m still a fan of GH and this will be the only program that I will continue to watch and I love the OLTL characters that are there now and hope to see Blair and Natalie with John and Todd. That would really make me happy, until my beloved OLTL is back on the air once more. And when it does I know the ratings would rocket through the roof. Keep the faith.

      August 1, 2012 at 7:39 pm

Bringing OLTL back would make SO many of us SO happy! One journalist said that doing so would enable history to look at this as the “New Coke” era on ABC/Disney daytime.

Perfectly said Cole. Debo… I read somewhere that Melissa Archer was not able to come to General Hospital because she is still on contract with Prospect Park, and for some reason they are not letting her out of the contract.

    August 1, 2012 at 5:55 pm

Well Vicky I’m not going to be mean to you I’m just going to be honest I will not be watching ANYTHING other than General Hospital on your station as I have done since you canceled AMC and OLTL. I am not interested in The Chew or Katie or that awful Good Day Afternoon or whatever you call it. You want me back as a loyal ABC daytime viewer as I was for past 45 years between 12:30pm and 4:00pm everyday then put One Life To Live and All My Children back on the air where they belong!!

  90. Cole

    August 1, 2012 at 7:38 pm

this is really hopeful, and a huge turn-around from the treatment Scripted daytime drama got from her predecessor. Hopefully, when the rights revert back from Prospect Park, we will see some sort of conclusion to the AMC storyline and the possible revamping/relaunching of an OLTL/AMC hybrid show!

    Dear Vicki,

Your only saving grace for ABC Daytime is to bring back either AMC or OLTL, Period! The networks feeble attempts to save money by putting on programs even your critics hate is furtile. You need to recognize the change in American households and that is more women are working because of economic times. With the invention of the DVR, that should be taken into consideration for programming as the Nielsen rating system is a dinosaur that needs to be extinct. It’s outdated, not accurate, and obsolete in terms of gauging what people are watching. Plus it (Nielsen ratings) does not truly reflect what viewers want to see.

I have watched ABC daytime afternoon programming for almost 30 years, I (used) to love coming home turning on my DVR and catching my soaps. If GH were off the air, you network would NEVER be on my TV until the evening. Surely you recognize this as no one is watching the crap you put on since (yes the Crap [Chew]) has MILD viewers but will not be on for 40 years!

Swallow your pride and when the rights come back to you for the shows we the viewers want to see…Put one or both of them back on!!! Sorry Katie, your show will fail like your attempt at prime time achoring!!!

    • Brian

      August 2, 2012 at 6:50 am

I do find it strange too, with regards to the whole Nielsen issue. We live in a technical advancing world…. except for the way we rate television programs.

  92. Annie

    August 2, 2012 at 1:56 am

Usually, I would say it would take a woman to clean up the mess Brian Frons left, but until One Life to Live returns to the air, the mess is here to stay. Do not trust ABC, do not feel they support GH – I think comments they will use the time switch (leading to) falling ratings to kill GH is on target. Chew on this Revelation: I do not have a TV anymore, and watch GH on the computer. Now with Desperate Housewives gone, so is ABC in my book. I will never get hooked on another one of their shows.

    August 2, 2012 at 10:08 pm

Newest rating info…ABC soap fans asked ABC not to cancel, know we can say “I told you so.”…”The news remained grim for week three of last-place ABC daytime entry Good Afternoon America, which dipped to 1.70 million viewers and continues to lose about one-half of the year-ago One Life to Live audience, according to the Live Plus Same Day data from Nielsen. It will be interesting to see what happens when veteran General Hospital steps into the 2 p.m. ET hour this fall. Elsewhere, The View on ABC is down but still tops; second-place The Talk on CBS was close to year-ago levels; and third-place The Chew on ABC is no All My Children.”

    August 4, 2012 at 5:33 pm

We hope, most of all, that she will take into account the history of GH and the characters. Their personalties and characteristics have been developed over the years. One of the main concerns for fans is the apparent “trashing” of the longtime due of Jason and Sam. The marriage/baby story that fans waited for for years has been literally “thrown under the bus”, all with the obvious intent of bringing in ME from OLTL and making him the lead. Steve and Kelly deserve more respect than to see their years of hard work and dedication to their roles thrown away. Not the intent?
Fine! Give us back our couple, stop having them speak lines we never would believe
they would say, and actions they never would take. Make us believe you want GH as much as we do. We will watch, wait, and see. And hope.

She sounds more reasonable than Brian Frons but at this moment in time I am still mourning the loss of OLTL NOTHING can replace it. I am grateful some OLTL characters are on GH and I love that GH is so much better BUT that being said they brought on Michael Easton whom I adore and did not bring on Malissa Archer so the John/Sam “kiss” is an insult to Jolie fans. I see John and it isn’t John. I miss Vicki, Clint, David Dorian, little Sam….sigh

I’m with so many others here. GH only for me and all else boycott, including sponsors. I’ve watched OLTL since I was in diapers and am still in denial thyat ABC would so crudely ditch a show that stood the test of 40+ years. I do enjoy GH, yet I still feel like I’m betraying my beloved family of Llanview when I watch. These replacement shows will NEVER

…last 40+ years. I’m sorry, but after the way the wonderful cast and crews were so harshly fired I cannot believe a word from ABC/D. When the Sam / Tea baby switch is revealed, I want reactions from Llanview as well! Not these off-air feedbacks from the most important people. When Todd’s secret is out, I want a rwaction from Viki, Jack, Tea, Dani, Bo, Dorian … the list goes on. There is nothing on this earth you could replace OLTL with that would make me ever turn back to your station. You had a long line of faithful viewers and we are not giving up. Great article … thank you!

thanks for the great interview…I have been watching GH since 1968, when my best friends mother, now my late motherinlaw, would watch in the afternoon. We would run home from school to watch it and eventually Dark Shadows. I watched OLTL and AMC since day one and I really appreciate your great interview. Keep up the great work.

    September 11, 2012 at 3:19 pm

Once trust has been so horribly broken, it will take more than an interview to re-gain that trust. From my perspective, the only way to get loyal viewers of all ABC programming back is to put the soaps back on as they were – anything else, is less than acceptable. When AMC was pulled, I turned ABC off except for OLTL and GH. When OLTL was pulled, I stopped watching ABC except GH. I also researched the ABC/Disney company online in terms of affiliates and financials and also no longer watch any affiliate stations. When the soaps return, I’ll be back to some of my favorites – dancing with the stars, judge judy, greys anatomy to name a few.

So after reading your colom I do feel a lil better, but there was no realabsolution about the possibility of OLTL in her comments. Do get me wrong it does soundreally good fot GH , but mot so much for Oltl . I will how ever keep the faith & my fingers crossed. By now they all must understand that there needs to be a place for OLTL in some compasity. If she were toring it back she would have hero status with alot of fans. We would pretty much back her in any venture she wanted. Thank you as well for standing up and going to bat for all of us lil ppl, and all the actors, and workers & their families. I personally will continue to support you and the soaps till the mu last day comes. OLTL FAN FOREVER !!!!!!!!!

Great interview! Thank you for asking pointed questions and getting answers!!! As a OLTL fan given the rights will come back to ABC I still want to continue to advocate for it coming back to ABC. I bet most of the actors would hop on board. Think of how the ratings would soar!!
ABC doesnt have to admit they made a mistake in cancelling OLTL. All they have to do is just put the show back on and sit back and watch the ratings soar and count their money coming in.
I hope OLTL fans will continue to ask for this. It would be a big win for fans and ABC.

  108. Sharon

    September 17, 2012 at 2:50 pm

I would have asked Vicki when will you bring back AMC and OLTL, because nothing else will appease us fans. I realize that ABC has to wait to get back the rights, only they could start planning and letting us know, a ‘summer special’ will not make those of us who are still boycotting ABC happy. We want our shows back, and will protest till then. Before our soaps were canceled ABC had much higher ratings, now it doesn’t.

  109. Jamie Dez

    September 17, 2012 at 3:55 pm

My Grandma, BF and Myself are all -HUGE- fans of OLTL. We watched it religiously every day, and now watch GH the same way.

I personally have been an enormous Todd Manning fan since he first came on OLTL back in the day, and of course also a huge fan of Starr Manning as well! And after meeting the most down-to-earth, sweet, humble and most talented Michael Easton (John McBain) in person at San Diego’s Comic Con I’ve been a super fan of his character as well! 🙂

We are all very happy that GH picked up a handful of OLTL’ers, but of course we would still rather have OLTL BACK ON THE AIR!! We miss our Victoria Lord!!!! *sad face* And of course we miss every single one of our other OLTL actors who got their story lines axed prematurely. They were all so phenomenal, and meshed so well with the amazing writers and directors of the show.

Keep up the good work GH, especially with our revered OLTL characters, and you’ll definitely keep us intrigued well into your 50th and beyond! 🙂

I would love for OLTL to come back on the air ASAP! I miss Vicki and Clint, Rex and Gigi, Natalie and John (I’m having a hard time watching GH because John will end up w/Sam), Bo and Nora, Mo and the diner!!!, etc. They were a part of my day for over 14 years like an extended family. My concern is if anyone does bring OLTL back on…will the core characters return or is there too much damage to the morale that has been done? I hope not…and I really want to see them again. GH is better now than it has been in years, but I started watching GH during the Luke/Laura heyday in the 80s. I don’t think it’s ever recaptured that magic, but yes….the episodes that are on right now are much better since the mob-storyline isn’t the main focus.

  111. AJ

    September 23, 2012 at 1:43 pm

I would love for AMC to come back and use the rest of the staff from OLTL. It would be bad to interrupt the fan base that has been developed for the former OLTL actors who are now on GH.

I watch AMC, OLTL and GH, all since day one. I kept up with storylines from spoilers from the newspapers, Channel 7 local news updates, TV shows, and then taped it via VCRs, DVDs and then DVR . Later in life when my mother could no longer see and until she died, I called her long distance to update her so what she could hear could be matched to what she heard and what I saw.

Thank you, Michael, for this interview. I don’t know how I missed it. However, it’s never too late to comment! Vickie, Vickie, Vickie. Once again, I have to say. You represent the rats at Disney. Being sweet and trying to placate us is not going to work anymore. You can tout The Spew. You can tout Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Night America. You can tout Katie. WE DON’T CARE! While we are glad our GH is still on, we will NOT GIVE UP. You claim, “There have been a lot of conversations about if there is something we could do and we are exploring that. When the Prospect Park deal was blowing up, I know the fans were so looking forward to those shows being online and the actors were too, of course. I know it was a huge disappointment, and it was a huge disappointment for us too. We were looking at that as that would be the continuation of the characters.” And when you were asked if the rights revert back you said, “They do. Basically it is a year after. So soon they will be back in our hands and then we have to figure out what we are going to do.” We will continue to boycott you – daytime and nighttime. We will continue to reach out to sponsors. I, myself, have stopped going to Macy’s. Be mindful, whenever the rights do revert back, we have power. We will use it to find until the rats at Disney release our soaps so they can find a new home. You’ve been advised!!!!!!

Darn! It’s terrible when I get so worked up and I can’t type straight. As unintelligent as a typo can make me seem, trust me, I am not! I am an intelligent, hardworking person who chooses to come home and watch her soaps. And, as far as being in that group that you don’t target because we aren’t the $ spenders, well, WRONG AGAIN!!!!!! You should see my credit card bills………… Again I say, you’ve been advised!

Eva LaRue Talks On Her Daytime Emmy Nomination, And Opens Up About The Loss Of John Callahan

For Eva LaRue, the past two months have been some of the most emotionally gut-wrenching and challenging of her life, following the passing of her ex-husband, father of her child, and dearest friend, John Callahan (Ex-Edmund, All My Children). The outpouring of support she has received not only from her former AMC cast mates, but the soap world in general illustrates just how dear Eva is to all of us, and how many people had special memories of their time with John.

While mourning the loss of Callahan along with their daughter, Kaya, there was some heartwarming and re-affirming news that any actress would love to hear. Eva was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in the Outstanding Guest Performer in a Drama Series for her work as Celeste Rosales on CBS’ The Young and the Restless, and she is great company as her former AMC co-star Michael E. Knight (Ex-Tad) is also nominated along with her for his work on General Hospital.

The coronavirus pandemic has hit our country and world hard, but through it All My Children virtual reunions emerged as fans were engaged by the content, transported to happier times that brought them back to familiar faces in Pine Valley in which Eva participated along with her good friends, Kelly Ripa, Mark Consuelos and so many more, thanks to the EW. com weeklong event which concluded on Friday.

Michael Fairman TV talked with Eva in this very candid, at times heartbreaking, and open conversation where she shares details into the final days of her beloved John, her last moments with him, and how she tried to plan a memorial in his honor during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For so many of us, 2020 has certainly seen more lows then highs, but in the end for Eva, to receive a nomination now (an award she was last nominated for back in 1997 as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her work as Dr Maria Santos on All My Children) couldn’t have come at a better time. Here now is our conversation with Eva.

Photo: JPI

I’ve been thinking so much about you.  I’m glad we could do this, and in the midst of the tragedy of losing John Callahan, and then receiving a Daytime Emmy nomination.  What was your reaction when you learned you were nominated in a category with none other than your former AMC castmate and good friend, Michael E. Knight (Ex-Tad, AMC, now Martin, GH)?

EVA:  Oh, I know!  He’s the first person I texted!  I was like, “Congratulations, Michael!  Did you ever in a million years think that you and I would be in the same category of anything?”  Then I said, “And when you win this, can I just borrow it for the weekend just to dress it up and take pictures with it… just want to borrow it, just babysit the trophy for a weekend, please?” (Laughs)

Photo: JPI

What did you end up submitting that landed you the nomination for your role as Celeste on Y&R?

EVA: I submitted a scene with Peter Bergman (Jack, Y&R), who I have been friends for 30 years, if not more, and in all that time we had never worked together.  I met him when I was married to John O’Hurley (Ex- Dr. James Grainger) because John was over at The Young and the Restless at the time.  I went to a Christmas party with John to Peter and Mariellen’s house, and do you know who else was there?  Lisa Rinna (Ex-Billie, Days), and it was before she had gotten Days of Our Lives. She was dating Peter Barton (Ex-Scott Grainger, Y&R) at the time. We both ended up on soaps at the same time.  So, I submitted a scene with Peter, who is amazing, warm and open and such a great actor. Then I submitted a scene with my on-screen daughter Sasha Calle (Lola, Y&R) – I love that girl, and another one with Michelle Stafford (Phyllis, Y&R) who has also been my great friend for a couple of decades. The other scene I put on my reel was with me and Jordi Vilasuso (Rey, Y&R) who I also adore.  He is awesome and such a sweetheart.  I only had two months worth of material to draw upon.  So, I just submitted the scenes that I liked the best, and they all were within story, and all made sense.

Photo: Getty Images

Where is Celeste supposed to be now?

EVA:  She went back to Florida, and that was that. I would never say never to anything, but it was always supposed to be a short stint, and it was great.

So not only is it you and Michael E. Knight, but Jeffery Vincent Parise, Chrishell Stause, and Elissa Kapneck. This Guest Performer category is loaded!

EVA:  I know! I know and love, Chrishell (Ex-Amanda) because we worked together on All My Children, too, right before I left, and she is a doll.  She just might be the sweetest, kindest, girl on the planet.  She literally might be the sweetest person who ever lived!  I don’t know the other two nominees personally.  So, I’m excited for them too.  It’s such a diverse category.  It’s just really fun to be nominated with all of them.

Photo: Hallmark Channel

You were nominated before, though, for your work as Maria on All My Chldren during the emotional baby switch storyline; working opposite Susan Lucci (Ex-Erica) for a lot in it.

EVA:  Yes.  I was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for All My Children, and I was nominated for Best Original Song.  I wrote a song when Maria came ‘back from the dead’ to All My Children, with a producer friend of mine from Miami Sound Machine.

So, you’ve been doing all of these All My Children virtual reunions, which is so interesting that in this pandemic, people are looking for content, and they dip back into these beloved shows.  Was it fun doing the Santos Family reunion with everybody?

EVA:  Oh yeah, it was really, really fun.  I only saw in the big picture everybody else’s photo who was a part of it, and the people who I actually do hang out with the most, and see the most, and talk to the most, are Kelly Ripa (Ex-Hayley), Mark Consuelos (Ex-Mateo), and Sydney Penny (Ex-Julia).  I don’t see Sydney as much, but I do see her probably once every two years at least, but Sarah Michelle Geller (ExKendall) I see all the time and talk to all the time.  Kelly, Mark, and Sarah are the ones who walked me through that first week when John Callahan passed.  They literally were on the phone with me, the three of them, almost every day, but I got beautiful outreach, from what seemed like everyone.  This is when no matter how many years have passed since you have been in daytime, that the daytime family as a group – there used to be fifteen shows, now there are four – and people have bounced around and they are on other shows- – but the entire soap opera community reached out,   I cannot even tell you how much that meant to me.  It was overwhelming, and it was really, spectacularly beautiful.

I hope it was some solace to you knowing how much people loved John, and also that they love and care so deeply for you.

EVA:  I mean, people who did not even work with John reached out.  Every soap was represented by getting a hold of me, sending a text or a phone call, or if they didn’t have my personal information, they tweeted, or whatever it was… literally from every reach of soapdom.  It was amazing.

And your relationship with John was amazing with all of the ups and downs you went through; that you remained such dear friends.

EVA:  We remained really great friends all the way.

I so remember when the two of you first got together and it was this storybook real life soap couple romance.  John was always so sweet to me.  I was so, so sad, and you know, my heart just broke for you.

EVA:  I think it was just such a shock.  I don’t think anybody, and even Kaya were talking about it, because she graduated this week, and her dad is not here.  We’re not having a graduation, because of COVID-19, which sucks on top of it, but we were just kind of talking through the feelings of it.  She said, “You know what’s weird?  I guess I never pictured dad getting old, and I always wondered why, and now I know.”  When I would get on John about his heart or his health, he used to always say, ‘Oh, don’t worry Evala, (he always called me “Evala”).  I’m going to be here.  I’m going to be here a long time.  I’m fine.  I’m going to be here to walk Kaya down the aisle and see her kids and all that.  Stop worrying,” Every time he said it to me, something in my gut said, “I don’t think he is.  I don’t think he is,” but I always just dismissed that.  But never in my wildest dreams did I think John wouldn’t make it to her high school graduation.  He was only 66.

I had heard you ended up running to Palm Springs to be near John.  I can’t even imagine what that must have been like.

EVA:  The only good thing about this pandemic is that we had been shut down for only two weeks at that point.  Kaya and I got in the car.  John had some heart procedures the day before, on a Thursday.  I called him in the morning before he went in for the procedure.  I said, “Call me as soon as you get out of there.  Call me as soon as you come-to again, and you’re good,” and he said, “Okay, I will.”  I said, “I’m going to send Kaya out to you on Friday for the weekend, just so you have somebody to hang out and watch you, and I might come out too,” And then, I said, “Maybe, I’ll come down too in case you are feeling weak, just to watch out for you for the weekend.”   So, he called me after the procedure.   I said, “I cannot believe they sent you home! You just had some major heart stuff done.”  He said, “Oh no, they said I’m fine.  It was just run-of-the-mill heart stuff, angiogram…”  I was like, “Are you sure?”  He said, “Yeah, I’m fine.  I’m just tired.  I’m going to go to sleep.”  I said, “Do you want me to send Kaya out tonight?” and he was like, “No, no, no.  Send her tomorrow.”  So, in the morning, I called him at 9:00am.  No answer.  I texted him.  He always texted me like Johnny on the spot, and then texts me immediately back.  So, I call him again at 10.  Nothing.  His best friend calls me about a half-hour later, “Hey, I talked to John at about 8:00 this morning.  He said he was feeling really, really shitty and was going to go back to the hospital, and then, I texted him again at like 8:30 to just tell him something, and he hasn’t texted me back, and he always texts me immediately back.”  I said, “Oh my, God, I’ve been trying to get a hold of him for two hours; he hasn’t texted me back,”   I said, “You know what, I’ll call you back.”  So, I called his friend who lives down the street from John, and I said, “Go to his house, please right this second, knock on the door, jump the fence, knock on his bedroom, he might be asleep, I don’t know.”  So, he gets there, nobody is answering.  I said, “Break into the house please.  So, he did, and John was collapsed in the bathroom.  They called the paramedics, and as soon as they called me back and said, “John is unresponsive in the bathroom,” Kaya and I threw everything in the car, and what usually takes us two and a half hours without traffic, we made it down there from Los Angeles in an hour and forty-five minutes.

I don’t know how you made it down there in one piece. Thank, God!

EVA:  I drove so fast, like literally broke all land speed records and thank God because we got there just in time.  He was in emergency.  He hadn’t been put up in ICU yet, where we wouldn’t have been able to see him.  They weren’t going to let us in the hospital.  Thank God the person answering the door was an All My Children fan.  She was the one saying, “Sorry, no one is allowed in the hospital, no one can come in,” and I was like, “No, no, no, my ex-husband just came in.”  She said, “Was it Edmund?” and I said, “Yes, it was Edmund!”  She said, “Okay, follow me.”  Thank God for All My Children.  Thank God.  So, we followed this woman secretly, and we get to spend a half-hour with him in Emergency.  He was already on life-support, totally unresponsive, but we got to play John his favorite music, we got to just sit there and hold his hand and talk to him, and tell him how much we loved him.  Sarah Michelle Gellar called right when we were in the hospital in Emergency, and she said, “Put the phone by his ear,” so I put the phone by his ear, and she talked to John too, and she told him how much she loved him.  She used to always call him “GP”, which was short of grandpa, because she came on the show when she was 15, and she didn’t have a dad, and John acted like a dad to her – but she used to always call him “grandpa”, and he hated “grandpa”, so he was like, “You can call me “GP”, but not grandpa,” so she always called him GP.  I just put the phone by John’s ear, and what was crazy is that when she talked to him, his feet started twitching.  He started moving his feet.  Then, when Kaya was talking to him about Yankee season, he started moving his feet.  We were kind of hopeful that something was changing for the better.  We had about a half-hour with him, and then, they took him up to ICU, and then, we knew we couldn’t see him again.  They called us later that night that he had passed.

I am just so thankful that you got to see John one last time.

EVA:  I thank God every day that we got to say goodbye, because if we hadn’t gotten there in time to say goodbye, I just don’t know.

It’s very rare that a couple after a divorce, who have a child, and went from romance to dear friends, end up maintaining that relationship so many years later in their lives.  I know so many people who were together at one point in their lives, for years, and they don’t even talk to each other now.

EVA:  Well, you know, like any divorce, the first four years afterwards were super contentious but then, by year five, we kind of had this major breakthrough, and from then on, he was one of my closest friends, and one of the things we always kept alive for each other was we loved to  dance together. We fell in love, I think, dancing because originally our characters on AMC met at this country-western bar, and we had to take country line dancing lessons on the show.  They hired a choreographer for us so that during those scenes where we were falling in love, we would actually be able to do a two-step! So, we went out and practiced at Denim and Diamonds, which was a big country-western place in New York City at the time.  We used to go out with a whole group of us.  It was me, and Teresa Blake (Ex-Gloria) and Kelly Ripa, and her boyfriend at the time, Winsor Harmon (Ex-Del), sometimes Walt Willey (Ex-Jack); we just had a whole crew of us who would go out country dancing.  John and I also loved singing together.  He had the most amazing gravely kind of rockstar voice, but his real talent was harmonizing.  He could harmonize to anything.  So, when he would come over, we would sit in the kitchen and sing, and sing, and sing until the late hours because that’s what we loved to do, and that’s what he loved to do.  That’s one of my favorite last memories of us.  He was just over the month before, and Kaya’s bedroom is near the kitchen, so she came out and was like, “Can you two shut up?”  It was like two in the morning and we were still singing in the kitchen. (Laughs)  John was my dear friend and my confidant.

Were you able to have some kind of service during this stay-at-home pandemic we are all dealing with, in order to mourn the loss of John?

EVA:  It’s been so crazy.  We couldn’t even have a funeral.  That’s what made it all the more heartbreaking.  There were less than twenty of us, and we just got on a Zoom call and memorialized John.   I thought we were going to do a big Zoom memorial, but it seemed so overwhelming and so impersonal, it just was rubbing us wrong in every way.  Every way we were looking at it, we were like, “Oh my, God, we just can’t.”  We wanted to invite everybody he had ever worked with, and we were like, “No, we want to do that when everything can open back up again, and invite every person, and have a party” because John was always the life of every party.  Maybe we can do that in the fall or next year.  I kept trying to write something for the small memorial we did do for three days.  I kept coming back to this one song, because John was always the consummate bartender, too.  I sang a song that Bette Midler sang on the very last episode of Johnny Carson.  It was “One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)” and it’s about a bartender who has got a big personality and a lot to say.   I changed some of the words around a bit just to reflect who John was, and so, I ended up singing for it instead of speaking.  We always talked about that last episode of Carson; how stunningly emotional it was when Bette sang that song to kind of sing Johnny off for of all of his years on the air.  So, that’s what I did and because we loved to sing together, it just made sense.

I do think you touched upon something, earlier, too.  I don’t think any other genre would have that kind of unbridled camaraderie.  It’s such a family, like you said.  I don’t think you would find that quite like this; certainly in show business.

EVA:  I really don’t think you can. Even though there is always a good amount of competition in the soaps as well; between the soaps it’s like they are any sports team, but there is always a level of respect, love, and familial connection within the community.  I think that is why they have stood the test of time.  I really do think that is what hooks our audience, that is what keeps them there after all of these years, even though unfortunately the genre is antiquated looking, there is something about it that is nostalgic, familial, and comfortable for people.

Every time I talk about All My Children, why do you think everybody go ga-ga for it, when it’s been off the air for several years now?

EVA:  It speaks to people’s childhoods.  It speaks to how we grew up.  You can’t undo nostalgia.  You can’t.  It’s in the way we grew up, the things we loved, the things that we scheduled our lives around, the people we fell in love with on the shows that we watched, who we cared about and loved their storylines. I grew up watching All My Children, General Hospital, and Days of Our Lives.

It must have been a spectacular moment for you when you realized you were actually in Pine Valley and a member of the cast of All My Children then?

EVA:  It was amazing.  I was a fan when I got the show.  I was a straight up fan.  I fangirled walking through that dressing room hallway for the first time! I was trying to keep it in check, but you know … (Laughs)

So, in closing, you would say, “Thrilled to be nominated”?

EVA:  Yes.  So fun.  It has really been a rollercoaster of a couple of months here.  That nomination was literally the bright, shining spot in all of this.
