Days Of Our Lives

SOAPnet Appears to be Sticking Around while ABC/Disney finalizes more carriage deals for Disney Junior!

As had been reported,  March 23rd, (which is this Friday) had marked the day that SOAPnet would be, for most markets in the country, folding to make way for its replacement Disney Junior!  And, if you followed the information disseminated from the cable network it seems like that date is not a hard date at all, and that the soaps will be sticking around on SOAPnet for the foreseeable future, but just how long might that be?

According to Soap Opera Digest, when speaking to a spokesperson for the network they related, “We’ve always viewed the launch of Disney Junior as a transition, not a flip of a switch, and as such SOAPnet will remain available for an undetermined period of time as additional carriage deals for Disney Junior are finalized with distributors.”

The good news is that The Young and the Restless, Days of our Lives, and General Hospital will continue to air for the time being day and date episodes as well as airing their primetime series lineup.   The thing that becomes problematic here, as since so many dates and stop and starts have been going on with SOAPnet and the launch of Disney Junior, pretty soon every one will be completely confused and know when to tune-in or tune-out!

Why can’t they split this freaking channel in two. Put Disney Junior during the day, Soapnet during the evening and the night. What does a kiddle do watching television at 1:00am anyway? Stupid Anne Sweeney!

But I’m not sure Soapnet actually does a favor to the ratings GH, Y&R and Days by staying on the air. These people watching the soaps on Soapnet would probably watch them on their original networks if it wasn’t for Soapnet.

what about the people that work during the day & don’t have a dvr….they rely on soapnet

dont get rid of soap net on commcast because soap net is very good and we like it alot and we are paying alot of money for it john and howard caylor and loyal fans that like soap net

Yeah, I’m one who works days and relied on SoapNet at nite to keep up with the 3 soaps I watched. I still watch GH and will try not to panic when it is gone. I am addicted. I found the ABC site on the internet where you can watch the day’s episode the next day, so I could still keep up, but not the same pleasure on small screen as regular TV. Big bummer!

You are a very smart woman, Heather! Your proposal is a no-brainer and should be obivous to the powers that be. SOAPNET was left to languish. Some more creative programming — an original soap or two, rebroadcast of older soaps, another talk show effort — and this jewel would really shine.

DITTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’VE BEEN WATCHING IT SINCE DAY ONE.

Not true! There are many people who watch there soaps on soapnet because there work schedules do not allow them to watch at the regular air time.

I want know why we can’t keep 1-14-13
all my childern and one life to live and Gh alone
on soapnet. Why can’t yall take off another soap’s
like day’s? I hate Day’s. Take off Nbc soap’s
yall are not being fair at all. Please leave abc soap’s alone.
Or why don’t we share soapnet. like the kids program in
the moring’s please companize and Abc soap’s on at
night that is fair. Please.
Thank-you

According to DirecTV, they have no information about SoapNet going off the air and they said it is definitely NOT going off the air on March 23rd!!! They told me they show SoapNet on their schedule long after that silly date!!!

I dont have kids , love soapnet – too bad if it completely fails – I will miss soapnet – thumbs down disney we all don’t have preschoolers !!!

WAY TO GO KATHRYN SOME PEOPLE LIKE ME FOR ONE WATCH SOAPNET
PRETTY MUCH 24 7 IN MY HOME, EXCEPT 3:00PM WHEN I SWITCH TO ABC
TO WATCH GH, WHICH MAY CHANGE IF THEY CANCEL IT FOR KATIE COURIC

BOO ON KATIE COURIC, WILL NOT WATCH HER ON ANYTHING

I LOVE MY SOAPNET AND AS USUAL ABC. AND DISNEY ARE STUPID

Poor Soapnet…no matter how much ABC tries to murder it, it won’t go! Just call it the Stefano DiMera of TV Channels. I mean, it’s not like the target demograpic of Disney Junior is anticipating the new channel with bated breath. More like baby food breath, actually…

A transition??? NOT a flip? On what planet do those guy live? Let’s hope they “flip” flop their minds yet again and leave soapnet on the air!

I think this means all the pressure from the soap fans is working. 🙂

This is good news as I don’t have a DVR and watch GH on SoapNet at night. However, our local cable company moved SoapNet a few weeks ago and never notified us. One day it was there and then it was gone for a few days. Found it again on a channel that didn’t exist before by accident, flipping through. Previously, SoapNet had been next to the Disney Channel, which you would think they would like for the conversion to Disney Jr. Now, they’re about 15 channels away. Weird. Hope SoapNet sticks around at least through the summer.

And a Pennsylvania paper said that Directv would offer Soapnet indefinately while Disney Jr would be offered as a SEPARATE channel.

Sounds like a lot of back peddling to me. Oprah laying off workers, John Carter losing 200 million for Disney, it is all adding up.

very good news indeed. lets hope general hospital gets renewed. soap net i love very much. lets hope it stays longer.

I was wondering why Comcast was still having Soapnet list as a tv station after the 23th of this month.I dont think the people that work for Disney has a clue on how to run a tv network as they cancelled 2 long time soap operas and its movie studio is going to lose close to $200 million dollars on the movie John Carter because of a poor choice for a title and poor marketing on the movie.

Just another example of how screwed up abc/Disney really is. We don’t need another Disney channel that repeats the same shows over and over and over. Don’t get me wrong I want SoapNet to stay. But I am smart enough to know it will be gone soon just like our beloved soaps. It took abc forever to get SoapNet up and running (I remember reading about it as far back as the late 80’s) and now they want to can it for another Disney channnel. Disney junior runs on the Disney channnel every morning I think that’s enough. Toddlers don’t need 24 hours of programming! Leave it alone abc! But alas they will screw this one up too.

I am definitely losing Soapnet very soon! I don’t see the sense in making Disney Jr 24 hrs.

I only watch Soapnet to watch the One Life to Live reruns that they show at 5 am, I dvr all of them. I wasn’t watching OLTL at this time but these episodes are great! I tried watching the AMC ones but they aren’t at the best time for AMC.
But I hope Soapnet stays on for a long time, there are enough networks for children as it is. I think it says a lot that Soapnet is staying on and the Disney Jr is not on. Disney is really messing up lately, i’m sure it’s the karma after what they did to AMC and OLTL.

Yahoo said Dancing w/the stars–worse ratings ever. Is that b/c of my soap peeps??? ABC ain’t seen nothing yet!!! Soaps FOREVER!!!!

My cable company doesn’t offer SoapNet. Eventually, Days and other soaps will simply go out of business, like almost every other great TV series. Shows like Cheers, MASH, and Dick Van Dyke chose to quit while they were ahead. Wouldn’t it be a hoot if they went all the way back to the 1965 debut of DOOL and the show could start all over again? Only problem I see with that is supposedly many of those early shows are either lost or weren’t saved.

Re: Dancing with the Stars . . . hubby and I watched the other night. In our humble opinions, we agreed with the judges & hosts: quality of this premiere show was the best it’s ever been. Counted 6 or 7 couples who have tremendous “staying” ability. So these low ratings are surprising. I thought Jack Wagner was excellent and so was the choice of his song, Nancy Sinatra’s “SugarTown.”

I saw that too. I don’t watch anything ABC except for GH so I relish in all the delight when one of ABC’s shows gets poor ratings. I hope this is because of the soap fans and not because of stiff competition on another network.

RE: DWTS; I never watched this show, but my family are hardcore GB Packers fans. When I saw that awesome Donald Driver was on this season I would have definitely tuned in. But I am boycotting ALL ABC/D with the exception of GH and SoapNet. Sorry Donald. I hope you win!

YEA!!! I can finish taping Brothers & Sisters!

I figured something was up when I saw “Veronic Mars” being added to SoapNet’s lineup (I loved that show first time around). I called my cable co. to complain about SoapNet going away months ago, then when I saw they were adding “VM” in April, i called again to ask if SoapNet was ending in March. They said NO, and they had no information that SoapNet was going away and Disney Jr. was coming. I figured I was one of the lucky ones in a market where SoapNet was staying for the time being. This is VERY good news. It almost makes me think all my phone calling, emailing, etc. was actually having an impact!

I would also like to add to the “back-peddling” comments. I recall the last article I read about SoapNet changing to Disney Jr., TPTB likened it very much to a “switch going off”, going so far as to say (I’m paraphrasing) “March 23 Soapnet will air it’s final shows and you’ll wake up March 24th to Disney Jr.”

I didn’t think it was possible for ABC/Disney to have any less credibility, but at least this time it seems to be a good thing that they don’t have a clue! It would be great if they “forgot” the Revolution and started airing OLTL again. I promise, ABC/D, I’ll forget all about the Revulsion and start watching OLTL again and will never speak of it again.

I’m with you. We can chalk it up to a bad dream & all will be forgiven-just give us back our OLTL!

I feel the same. W/OLTL gone something is sorely missing in my day.

I don’t know why they can’t continue to show the soaps and Disney shows. They can even throw Chew and Revo on for anyone who missed it first time around.

There was an interview in my morning paper today with the head of Disney Jr. & she said it starts tomorrow! My Directv guide shows SoapNet thru April 4 (that’s as far out as the schedule goes on the guide) How screwed up is this?

Supremely screwed up! Check out the content “For Grown-Ups” on Disney Junior and tell us if you will be watching: http://disney.go.com/disneyjunior/for-grown-ups

See last paragraph from this TV Guide article that reports. “SoapNet will continue to have wide distribution for some time with many distributors choosing to carry both networks until such date as SoapNet fully sunsets.”
http://www.tvguide.com/News/Disney-Junior-SoapNet-March-1041380.aspx

So Disney Junior isn’t replacing Soapnet? They are actually two different networks and Disney is choosing to cancel SoapNet? Why cancel SoapNet, if people want to see soaps and Disney Junior is separate?

Heather, I had said the same thing…give the daytime hours to the kids on SOAPnet (although Disney already has plenty of programs for them) & leave the evening hours for the soaps. Then bring AMC & OLTL back & keep GH!! “The Rev” keeps sinking in the ratings & they took the highly-rated OLTL off for that??!!

Remember, this is all a financial move. They just want soaps to disappear completely because even though they are entertaining they’re not as cheaply produced as the talk shows. When I was in college around 1980 everyone watched soap operas between classes because all there was was local tv and local tv had soap operas all afternoon. Now the young people have cable to choose from and one of the most popular talk shows with them is Jerry Springer. I guess that shows you how America has changed. I do think keeping soapnet on is a great idea and I will watch it as long as its available, but I also realize I’ll wake up one day and it will be gone. I will watch the remaining soaps as long as possible then I guess there will still be Jerry
Springer.

I am glad that soapnet will be available awile longer and will watch it as long as its available. Unfortunately with the competition from cable daytime viewers have so much of a choice of what to view, they don’t necessarily choose to watch soap operas. Also, abc has really tried to discourage viewership as they do not even advertise GH anymore. When I was in college around 1980 the high school and college kids only had free local tv which featured soap operas all afternoon so we watched them between classes and after school. My best friend from high school faithfully watched Another World and I faithfully watched Ryan’s Hope. Now every college campus has cable tv and one of the most popular shows with college kids is Jerry Springer. How America has changed. I intend to watch the remaining soaps as long as they’re still on the air and once they’re gone I guess there’s still Jerry Springer.

if it could be done costwise an all vintage soap channel would be awesome—edge of night-dark shadows- santa barara-one life -even ally mcbeal -soap mary hartman etc. etc. etc.

for the working people that watch at night soapnet. pls. think again .childred shows should be on before 730pm .pls. as we all know thay need there sleep . thanks
i will miss my soapnet.

I dont get it ,is soap net staying or going ?I hear people lost it ,but I have direct tv and its on ,Now this morning I read at daytime confidential that abc family is taking over and they will still keep the soaps going .So what the heck is going on ?Why dont they play reruns of one life to live and all my children, and give interviews of our favorite characters from those soaps ,I want to know how Erika slezak is doing ,I miss her and want to know that she is ok.Also why doesnt soap net/Abc family put the emmys on soap net abc/disney owes it to the fans ,screw this disney junior crap. ,enough with the kiddie shows there all over the cable networks.

I sat down tonight to watch GH on Soapnet. IT WAS GONE!!! Soapnet is GONE! I spoke with Comcast, my cable provider. They said it is gone and that we were warned in 2010 that it would be going off the air this year in April/May. I registered my complaint, but little good it’ll do. I have my little kids with my during the day so can’t watch GH and Y&R when they air live. Soapnet was my evening entertainment.

I am NOT happy!!!! Has anyone else lost Soapnet recently? What’s going on with it?

I went to watch my soap last night and instead Mickey Mouse was on. I can’t beleive
this. Please please give us the Soap channel back. I enjoy my soaps at night after a long day at work. Why don’t you give it back on a different channel. If I wanted to watch Mickey Mouse I would turn on the politicians.

So annoyed that SoapNet is no longer on. I am too busy during the day to watch GH and/or my 5 year old has her shows on, which she would never be watching at 10PM at night. I am ALL FOR children’s TV but after 8 PM, why can’t it be SOAPNET? ORRRRR, why can’t Disney use one of the other 5,000 channels on TV????

I was confused when I turned on SOAPNET to watch GH tonight and saw…some silly, hyperactive cartoon characters bouncing around! At first I thought there was some mistake…and then Google led me here.

I’m hugely thankful that I have DVR because now I don’t know what I’d do without it! I can’t usually watch GH in the afternoon.

But this isn’t just about my own convenience. I’m upset that yet another channel for adults has been replaced by more kiddie fare! The percentage of households with children continues to decline, yet here is another channel just for them. I don’t get it. You’d think kids were paying the cable bills!

I feel bad for all those people who don’t have DVR and won’t be able to view their beloved soaps anymore.

I missed my favorite soap today (Y & R), and I tuned into the Soapnet channel 72 to watch it, instead I got that rediculous Disney Junior Channel. I turned to the T.V Guide Channel to see what was wrong, and they still had Y & R listed for the SOAPnet channel. Very PO’d. If Disney THINKS that I will allow my children to watch that stupid channel, they don’t have the brains they were born with.

I came home from work today and there was no more soapnet, I don’t know if i’ll even watch tv now since I work during the day and cant watch my soaps on their original channels. Shame on Disney for thinking every one can afford a DVR. Boo on Disney JR, I’m boycotting it, my kids will never watch that channel.

I AM SO SICK OF THESE NETWORKS TAKING AWAY OUR SOAPS. FIRST AMC AND OLTL, NOW SOAPNET. WTF????? THERE ARE ENOUGH DISNEY CHANNELS OUT THERE, WHY DO THEY NEED DISNEY JUNIOR??? ITS NOT LIKE MY KIDS WILL BE WATCHING IT 24/7 ANYWAY. I DON’T KNOW ANY KID THAT WILL BE UP ALL NIGHT WATCHING TV.

BRING SOAPNET BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PRETTY SOON THERE WILL BE NOTHING LEFT TO WATCH ON TV, JUST STUPID REALITY TV AND WHO WANTS TO WATCH THAT ALL THE TIME, THAT IS WHAT REAL LIFE IS FOR!!!!!!!!!!!

You know what I agree with Mira and Jessika. I pay the cable bill NOT my kids, and they will NOT watch Disney Jr on my soapnet channel, I will delete it from the remote, they won’t even know its there. LMAO, Just like we DON”T have the TV on or even on ABC when the Chew is on. They take away my soaps I will not help their ratings on stupid shows that replace them. Glad to see the Revolution is going away, just wish they would bring back OLTL in their old spot.

I HAVE COMCAST MAPLE SHADE AND I LIVE IN BROOKLAWN NJ AND THE TOOK OFF SOAPNET AND PUT ON DISNEY, I THINK IT IS SO UNFAIR, BECAUSE MY MOM RECORDS GENERAL HOSPITAL AT HER HOUSE AND I USE TO WATCH SOAPNET AT NIGHT, AND NOW IF THERE IS AN INTERUPTION DURING GENERAL HOSPITAL I HAVE NO WAY OF SEEING THAT DAYS GENERAL HOSPITAL, SO CAN YOU PLEASE HAVE COMCAST MAPLE SHADE BRING BACK SOAPNET OR CAN I SOMEHOW HAVE IT AS A SPECIAL CHANNEL, BECAUSE IF NOT SOMEDAY WHEN I GET OF COMPUTER AND A HOUSE PHONE I WILL SWITCH TO VERIZON. PLEASE HELP???? ASAP, THANKS DEBBIE.

Tell me what can I do to get my provider, which is Comcast to put Soapnet backl on their lineup.

It is stupid to take soapnet off cause Disney wantsanother kids show I agree with heather have dis.ey can show during the day n let soapnet continue, direct tv said it is,Disney who is discontinued the show, this sucks

Please leave are soap net alone we need are shows so we can support them and help them we have to fight for them to stay on for good we do not want Disney Jr to take over soap operas is are life life line and for a’re family’s to kids can under stand way that big people should have their soap operas more then life it self in the near future that kids will under stand that we do t want Disney JrI it needs to find a different channel not ares my provider is direct tv and I need theses shows I have been watching for all most 45 Years now you have to respect that or I can get are president Obama original will get a higher council to take are side

Soap net be longs here at 262 on direct tv and we need them to watch and support them as they work and get paid to feed their family’s we don’t need Disney Jr right now I know them if we work a long side of them that we can put Disney Jr on the back burner for now we need totthink about soap net on a good channel like 260 and 261 and 262 as are hub station for soap net news for every day and night and talk a little about wants next on the soap operas to watch every day of the week night and day to we are trying so hard for them to stay on in march is my brithday month and Imy wish is to keep soap net on for are sake and are kids when they grow up and they will watch soap net like mothers should do all their life and I hope you can reconsider your propositiont to lets US know want you are doing I know thatyou ‘re trying to lead US in to a wrong way so I hope that want we want is soap net to stay on for good and share with them to

Soap net has a wonderful job support for are shows soap net needs to stay on and theses people need their Jobs to support their family and for US to so they can have their pay check ever signal day and night we have to look for that you have to realize that when people wants some thing you should let them have it

Please don’t take are soap net we need it more then kids do we all so have that right not kids snowball that matters that we need are shows to catch up with them

Soap net is are life we need to settle this right now are soap operas is are main hot line shows needs to stay on for ever and I don’t think that you are going to remove are shows big people comes first more then kids do the soap opera people, needs their jobs to feed their family and they all so need their pay check for working on the soap operas on soap net we need to agree on this so we can see are shows every day and night

This is devastating for SoapNet to be canceled. I like watching DOOL and GH. I also watched Y&R there. I am so glad that TVGN picked up Y&R. Hopefully they will pick up these two and then I won’t miss SoapNet and will not care what takes its place. I always thought viewers’ opinions mattered. Doesn’t seem that way.

There are some of us soap fans still alive and cont. to enjoy the soaps. They repeat everything else why not the soaps. I am up 6am every morning for one life to live didn’t watch as a kid because my parents soaps were on CBS.now I watch 10 on soap bet and I wake up 12/19/13 and my soap is gone. # heart broken

Did anyone pick up One life to live

The children today don’t sit still like we did and watch tv. To many game systems.

The major deal is that we get to keep are soap net and we need to tell are fans that we are keeping are shows on Farsi see that my birthdays is in march and I want you to know that are shows on soap net does stay on in march and I don’t care I live for this for 45 years Now are kids can have the best deal on direct tv with both Disney Jr and soap net when you have to put Ryan’s hope and knptslanding and Dallas and dynasty and the old port Charles as night shift as gh and passions and loving and the old amc and oltl back when we left them you have to promise US if you can do this for US we need you to be their so we can listened want you say but the farther hand is are soap net and are soap operas are really a wonderful thing to under stand so please don’t take away are soap net we need them they are important to US to relate as a family

We will tryto stop you for putting this stupid idea about Disney Jr in to kids heads they do t need it much they all ready have it on direct tv so give US little time e to think first and be patientwith US

I know another idea we have here way don’t you put Disney Jr and soap net to work to gather as a team and we can all of US fans will help both of them and all of the soap operas should do a nurses ball to help raise the money for theses soap operas and leave them on in march is my birthday month and my wish is comming true we will tryto help in a way of life it self theses shows means a whole lot to US you can all so help US to and I know that god would wants to be faithfully and kids d to help other shows around US and god only knows that every one of US is helping others to together as one huge group of people even are past soap operas to we all love them soap net be lo gs on tv on their channel if we can show respect for once in a life time and we will figure it out with direct tv and with are other tv companys to like dish network and Comcast we wish that all of US will be happy want we got to keep are soap net on for good and for are kids sake I hope you request all of this to help you to decide to so this do the right thing to leave are soap net on in the comming future

God knows how to fight back and we can turn things around to let soap net to stay on in marich and we need them so all of US have tv to watch soap net and for are kids sake to all of are soap operas need to do nurses ball to raise money for are soap net to stay on in march and I mean it for all the fans need soap net to watch themdayand night we will net era let them go never in a million years

Arianne Zucker Reveals Her Last Days of our Lives Airdate

Arianne Zucker, who is no longer on contract with Days of our Lives, and involved in a lawsuit against the show, took to her You Tube channel and in her latest episode, and offered up what she believes is her final airdate as Nicole Walker DiMera.

The actress expressed: “I was really appreciative of the amount of support that I have had since leaving Days of our Lives.” She then added,  “My last airdate, I think, it’s July 29th and we’ll see how things go after that.”

Zucker went on to say how she has continued to receive overwhelming support since suing her former employer, Corday Productions, with the allegations that former Co-EP Albert Alarr sexually harassed her and other females at the show, and that the production company entity did not respond sufficiently and adequately.

Photo: JPI

After lodging her complaints, Zucker said her agents received two notices that Corday Productions were reducing her pay before her character was ultimately written off.  Zucker’s contract expired in January and since DAYS tapes over six months ahead it brings her final airdate, which as of now, to the end of July. Zucker is suing for harassment, discrimination, retaliation, negligent hiring and supervision, and wrongful termination among other claims.

Previously, Corday Productions issued this statement on Zucker’s claims: “The allegations in Ms. Zucker’s lawsuit are without merit. Corday Productions, offered to renew Ms. Zucker’s contract including offering her a pay increase. Rejecting Ms. Zucker’s counteroffer does not constitute retaliation. Complaints about Mr. Alarr’s on-set behavior were promptly investigated. Corday Productions fully cooperated with the impartial investigation and subsequently terminated Mr. Alarr.”

On her You Tube channel, Arianne went on to thank everyone who came out to the east coast fan event last weekend that featured several DAYS stars. She expressed, “My whole goal is to really help people stand up for themselves.” Arianne also shared she thinks it’s important for people who have gone through trauma to help each other through it.

On DAYS, Nicole is still in the dark that Sloan (Jessica Serfaty) is raising her child, Jude, with Eric (Greg Vaughan), and Eric also doesn’t know that he is raising his biological son. Will Eric and Nicole reunite and will Nicole find out what Sloan, Melinda and Leo (Greg Rikaart) have been hiding for months, before she exits the show? Stay tuned. There has been on official confirmation from DAYS that July 29th is Zucker’s final airdate.

You can check out Ari’s latest episode from her You Tube Channel below.

Now let us know, do you think somehow DAYS and Arianne will work these out and she will somehow be back on the show? What do you think Nicole’s exit will look like? Do you think they will recast? Let us know in the comment section below.

DAYS and ‘Supernatural’ Alum Jensen Ackles Joins the Cast of Justin Hartley’s CBS Series ‘Tracker’

Look who’s joining Justin Hartley’s hit freshman drama, Tracker! None other than another soap alum, former Days of our Lives and Supernatural favorite Jensen Ackles.

In a reveal via Hartley’s Instagram on Thursday, Ackles is set to play Hartley’s on-screen brother on the CBS procedural drama. In Tracker, Colter Shaw is estranged from his brother, Russell, which has been a big part of the mystery of season one.

Ackles is best known for his long run as Dean Winchester in The CW’s Supernatural, a role he reprised in the prequel of the series The Winchesters. He also recently starred in ABC’s Big Sky as Sheriff Beau Arlen and in The Boys as Soldier Boy.

Jensen was the original Eric Brady on Days of our Lives, a role he played from 1997-2000, before departing for the world of primetime and film.  Eric was in love with Nicole played by Arianne Zucker. The part of Eric was recast with Greg Vaughan taking over the role in 2012.

In his Instagram post, Justin thanked everyone for watching Tracker, and then revealed Ackles as the surprise casting announcement in the role of Russell, while Jensen was playing pinball in the video! No word yet on when Jensen’s first episode as Russell will air. Stay tuned.

Wally Kurth Talks on His DAYS Daytime Emmy Nomination, His Emotional Scenes, and Remembering John Aniston

During our 2023 year-end honors at Michael Fairman TV, we named Wally Kurth as our pick for Best Overall Performance by an Actor for his double-turn as both Ned Quartermaine on General Hospital and as Justin Kiriakis on Days of our Lives. So, it was absolutely no surprise to us that Wally landed a Daytime Emmy nomination for his riveting work as a grieving Justin in the Supporting Actor category for the upcoming 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

On DAYS, Justin had been put through the emotional wringer, of first, losing his beloved Uncle Vic, played by the late John Aniston, and then finding out that Victor was the supposed biological father to Justin’s son, Alex (Rob Scott Wilson). If you didn’t reach for the hankies during some of Kurth’s work in these scenes, we don’t know what will make you do so.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Wally to get his reaction to his fourth Daytime Emmy nomination in the last six years. Kurth was nominated in the Supporting category in 2018, 2020 and now 2024 and Lead Actor in 2021.

In addition, Wally shares what scenes were on his nominated reel, how John Aniston impacted his work, how he has changed as an actor over the years with a new outlook, and being the only actor out there with two long-running roles on two long-running soaps, and much more. Here’s what Wally had to share below.

Congratulations on your well-deserved nomination. You decided to submit yourself this year for Emmy contention in both Lead Actor for GH and Supporting Actor at DAYS, correct?

WALLY: I did. I thought the DAYS reel was a little more dramatic, much more emotional. I had thought with the way the judging goes that it might be a little bit more, winnable, if you will. I enjoyed and was proud of my work at General Hospital, so it’s all good. I’m thrilled. It’s always nice to be nominated.

Photo: JPI

What scenes did you ultimately choose for your Supporting Actor reel?

WALLY: I started chronologically, as always, trying to tell a little bit of a story. I actually started with a scene where Justin has to tell Maggie (Suzanne Rogers) that Victor’s (the late John Aniston) plane went down and it was not found. Then, the scene with Bonnie (Judi Evans) where I sort of have to let it all out, and grieve the loss of this man who was practically Justin’s father, but it was his Uncle Vic. We have a little scene talking about Victor, and then there is a short snippet at the funeral where Justin eulogizes Victor. Next, we jump to scene where Justin discovers the letter where Angelica admits that indeed Victor is Alex’s father (Rob Scott Wilson). So then, Justin has to tell Alex, and then I also sort of grieve the fact that I’m no longer his father. Justin basically lost his son. It was very dramatic and very emotional. I was guessing the judges would be like, “Hey! Enough with the crying! Stop, you big baby!” But, they didn’t. They must have thought that it was convincing enough that it felt really truthful at how Justin was upset about these two unfortunate realizations.

You bring up a really good point. I talk to actors all the time about crying on Emmy reels. Sometimes, many feel it might put voters off. But obviously, this time it worked well for you!

WALLY:  What I liked about the crying scenes was that, like in real life, you’re not crying all the time when something bad is happening, right? I think crying happens and it takes you off guard. It happens without you realizing it. These were all moments when Justin was alone, really. Bonnie comes in the room where Justin is just kind of like dealing with it. And then her coming in, opens up Justin and she is there to hold him. I think that often happens in real life. I thought that was correct for the writers to do that, you know, that Justin would break down when he was alone.

Did you feel the pressure of wanting to get these scenes when Victor died and at his memorial, just right due to the enormity to it, and to do justice for John Aniston?

WALLY: I allowed myself to use my heartbreak over John Aniston. I loved him. I just sort of allowed his presence for me in the scenes. It was sweet. It was good for me. I’m just thinking about it now and I feel teary-eyed. John was such a sweet man. He led by example, and he really did teach me how to be a professional actor, and he was a mentor. He never told me anything specific, but he was just John, and in the scenes, this was the time for me tell him how I feel.

Then, you had the heartbreaking scenes with Rob Scott Wilson where Justin tells Alex he is not his father!

WALLY:  I thought that was just really challenging material. As I get older, I just trust the material, and don’t get ahead of myself. I trust myself with the emotion. Just let it happen if it happens. When I first read it, I kind of imagined what it could look like and then you just let it unfold from there.

You’ve got Robert Gossett (Marshall, GH), A Martinez (Nardo, The Bay), Mike Manning (Caleb, The Bay), and Bryton James (Devon, Y&R) all in your category. Robert has won two Daytime Emmys in a row, last year for Supporting Actor and the year before for Guest Performer.

WALLY:  l love Robert. I worked with the character Marshall on General Hospital, and we had so much fun. He’s a great guy and a really good actor. A Martinez is the best guy ever. I have such admiration for him. Whenever I see him, we always really connect and to be in included with him is great. Bryton James, I don’t know, but I know he beat me in this category in 2020. Mike Manning, I didn’t get the opportunity to know when he was at DAYS as he weren’t in scenes together, but I hear good things about him, too.

When you are judging Emmy reels, what do you look for when you’re voting on a performance?

WALLY: That’s a really great question. And because let’s face it, there’s just a lot of terrific talent in daytime. This year, I judged two categories. I don’t just go with, “Okay, who’s crying the most.” I really try to go with the one who’s touches me the most, who surprises me and moves me. And so, if you go with that, you’re probably going in the right direction. I also think that upfront you do need to kind of give them something in the first couple minutes that shows you know what you’re doing and don’t make it too repetitive.

Who did you first tell you were nominated?

WALLY: My manager, Michael Bruno called me. I was in Chicago with my daughters having a late breakfast and I knew the nominations were going to happen around 11 am Chicago time. I didn’t tell my daughters about what was happening, just in case, I didn’t get nominated. So, when Michael called, I went, “Oh, boy!” I told my daughters who were sitting at the table with me. So, they were the first two people that I could tell, and that was really nice.  We had champagne which was really funny because I bought three little glasses of champagne, and as soon as I bought it, we toasted. They said, “We don’t really like champagne.” So, I ended up drinking all three glasses. (Laughs)

What do you think of Eric Martsolf (Brady), your Day Players Band member, and DAYS co-star getting a Lead Actor nomination?

WALLY: I remember, I was like talking to him and I was like, “Eric, are you going to submit yourself?” And he is like, “I don’t know. I don’t really have anything …” And the next thing you know, he’s nominated. I’m like, “Wow! I guess he found something!” (Laughs) I love Eric. I have such respect for him and his gift, and he works really hard. So, I was very happy for him. I’m glad we weren’t in the same category, however.

How many years now have you been playing Justin on DAYS?

WALLY: I started here 37 years ago in 1987. I was there for four years and then I left. Then, 18 years later, Ken Corday (EP, DAYS) invited me back in 2009 and I’ve been on the show now for 15 years. So, I guess a total of 20 years on and off over the last 37 years. Everyone remembers 1987-1991 … those were big, big years for Justin and Adrienne who back then were a supercouple.

Have you determined who you would thank in your acceptance speech if you win this year’s Supporting Actor Daytime Emmy?

WALLY: I feel like this year I kind of have an idea of what I would say. I think I can remember all of that without writing it down. If I had gotten nominated for both shows, I was definitely going to point out and thank the powers-that-be for giving me dual citizenship and how much I appreciate that. I do think that being on both soaps, I will go to my grave believing that it’s made me a better actor. In fact, since I’ve been doing both shows, I’ve been nominated for Daytime Emmys. I’ve become a better actor. I feel like maybe it’s just that I’ve gotten older and wiser, but I feel as though when I go in there to work, I’m really focused and I’m really prepared. I know I pretty much get one shot to get it. We’re in the business of “one takes” now in the soaps.

People are so lucky to even have one enduring role in their careers, but you’ve been able to have two, and they’re completely separate characters on two legacy shows; one which just turned 61, General Hospital, and the other Days of our Lives which will soon celebrate 60 years, as well.

WALLY: I didn’t plan on it. I must have done something right. Back in 2009, Ken called me up and invited me back to DAYS. I really jumped in. I’d been out of work for four or five years. I went back with a whole new attitude about the work, about the genre.  In 2004, when I left General Hospital, I was kind of burnt out. Looking back on it, I didn’t have a good attitude and I was just done. I was kind of tired. New writers come in and sometimes, when you have new writers that look at your character differently, it can be very difficult, because you just know that their passion is not with your character. However, in this case, I’m like, “I’m going to take whatever the writers give me and do the best I can and do my job. Let the writers do their job.” I think the writers also know that I really respect them and I’m not going to complain. I’m not going to tell them what to do and I’m going to stay out of it. They have enough to work out. They have enough to do. I’m going to be the problem solver, not the problem creator. There are enough problem creators. Believe me when I tell you that every time I leave those sets, I’m like, “Thank you. I love it.  See you the next time I see you.” I know how lucky I am to do both shows and to have this opportunity to act at my age and still be sent scripts. I love the art of acting. I’d do it for free. The fact that they’re paying me and I am able to do this and work with these great, wonderful, talented actors every day, it’s kind of mind-blowing.
