THE TALK Continues To Increase Ratings! So, Are Single-Host Talk Shows Going To Be A Thing Of The Past?

With the success of CBS’ The Talk, and before that ABC’s The View, are these type of daytime talk shows the sure-fire hits of the times, while the single host talk series are a fading commodity?

Look no further than this new piece out today from The New York Post, which spoke to The Talk’s lead host, Julie Chen and CBS Daytime executive, Angelica McDaniel.  Chen believes The Talk has experienced significant ratings growth — it’s averaging over 2.3 million viewers, up 16 percent from last season — because its hosts offer diverse viewpoints in a “something for everyone” approach.

Julie Chen went on to say about her co-hosts and finding the right chemistry “What I strongly believe is that you have to find the right TV personalities to gel as a team on the air, which is a very difficult thing to capture. There are a multitude of reasons, but ego is the biggest reason — and what you have with us five ladies is that we all have egos, but we know how to bring out the best in each other.  We’re not in competition with each other.  That’s a very difficult thing with on-air personalities, whether they’re on-air news anchors or talk show hosts. You have to function as a team . . . and you never know the chemistry until you’re in it. It’s like dating.”

Angelica McDaniel also feels that CBS Daytime’s across the board appeal and ratings strength have helped grow The Talk, which was McDaniel’s creative baby!  “Unlike any other network, all of CBS daytime is up.  We have five personalities on The Talk — and, at the end of the day, talent is what really makes or breaks a show,” McDaniel says.

So is The Talk the afternoon talk show that is doing things right?  With across the board synergy for their daytime brand?  Looks like it!  Let us know your thoughts on the subject!

Still miss ATWT. To this day, it remains one of my all time favourite soaps (next to DAYS). Even at its worst, there was still so much to love about it.

I don’t watch much of The Talk, unless I know in advance there is a guest I want to watch (including soap stars) but overall, I can’t say they have me as a viewer, no matter how much I like Julie Chen and Ms. O. I’m still bitter over the loss of ATWT.

That’s great for Julie Chen! Asian americans are very under represented and often discriminated and bullied by hollywood and the mainstream manhattan media complex. Look at how nbc bullied and humiliated part Japanese ann curry. nbc did that to ann curry bec she’s a woman who’s Asian american! the mainstream manhattan media complex and hollywood dehumanize Asian american women by portraying them as a. dragon lady b. hypersexualized for majority white males and c. docile and subservient and passive.

nbc thought ann curry could be mocked and bullied bec she’s an Asian american woman and therefore she’s docile and subservient and passive. how racist and sexist! after that judas kiss off from lauer they went to commercial and then ann curry evaporates and is replaced by a much younger white woman! it was surreal. how racist! curry was pressured to look young while lauer is allowed to look ancient w/c is ageist!

curry is scapegoated for nbc’s tanking ratings bec she’s an Asian american woman. yet not only does white gay blanderson cooper get to stay on cnn despite his crappy ratings but he’s given a now flopped daytime talk show by the manhattan media and hollywood! it’s bec lauer and cooper are white men and are part of the “ruling class” of hollywood and the media w/c is the old white dude establishment.

it’s bec the “tolerant” manhattan mainstream media and “progressive” hollywood rewards blanderson’s failures bec he’s a white gay guy. he’s the “right kinda minority” while ann curry’s the wrong kinda minority bec she’s Asian american. the mainstream manhattan media complex and hollywood love “diversity” only if diversity means white lgbt. the mainstream manhattan media complex discriminates against Asian americans thru their lack of reporting while hollywood is racist to Asian americans thru their portrayals.

Julie Chen’s presence helps to combat the horrid stereotypes that hollywood propagates abt Asian americans like that recent movie from gl alum britany snow abt a singing grp. It was really racist and bashed Asian american women. One char was the passive and docile and submissive and subservient Asian american female stereotype. She was meek and mild and no one understood anything she uttered and yet she’s a member of a singing grp? One again Asian american women are demeaned for cheap laughs. What demented and racist humor. The other Asian american female char was the “dragon lady”. All she did was scowl at the white female lead who had to keep referring to her by mentioning her full name to keep reiterating that yes she’s Korean american and therefore “otherized” by hollywood. It would be great if Julie Chen addressed the racism of hollywood and the mainstream manhattan media complex towards Asian americans.

the Talk – a ripoff of The View

Single host talk shows a thing of the past??? Really???? Has Oprah been gone that long? Phil McGraw, Doctor Oz, and Ellen DeGeneres prove that there’s plenty of life in that format. It’s just like the chemistry issue … if you have the right host tied to the right format, it will do just fine. Too many people think that they’re the right host these days. Too few really are.

AS THE WORLD TURNS belongs in that 2 PM slot. Or at the very least, another daytime drama. Sorry, it’s just how I feel.

The Talk, and so many shows like it: cheap and awful. They are talking about NOTHING. Self-promotion, celebrity chatter, promoting other cheap awful shows. Why are you even acknowledging them? That ATWT is gone, and this crap is in the time slot it held for decades still rankles.

Why are they touting as “Network’s fastest growing daytime show” and making a big deal out of 2.3 million viewers?! For starters, General Hospital is the fastest growing daytime show with ratings growing each week and growing from 2.2 million to almost 3 million daily viewers. Second of all The Talk’s ratings still don’t match As the World Turns. ATWT was averaging 2.4-2.5 million viewers a day. The talk’s growth isn’t that big a deal and it’s stayed at those numbers for weeks and hasn’t gone up anymore so I think it’s time to put the “Network’s fastest growing daytime show” thing to rest.

The Talk is awful. It is only being bragged about because it was not cancelled like The Revolution, and has higher ratings than The Chew and Katie. Maybe it will stay on, but I think CBS is getting the picture that Soap Operas are what daytime fans want, not crap like this!

I AGREE WITH YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the chew is NOT all that!! the only time the people in my circle watch is when they have soap stars on – i dvr the show when ever they have them on & fast forward thru everything is…………..

Love The Talk. One of the few talk shows I like.

The last thing I want to watch is a bunch of women bitching early in the morning; same reason I don’t want the View and yes, I’m a woman! Hate talk shows.

I NEVER watched The Talk or any of the daytime talk shows…I rather watch MY STOREIS over these kind of shows any day……..

ditto! Never watched the Talk or the Chew and don’t plan too. The one or two times I’ve watched the View was extremely annoying. No thank u. I like my TV dramas too 🙂

TOO MUCH TALK FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I rather watch DRAMA !!!!!!!

I am still pissed that The Chew is still in AMC’s timeslot!!! Their show is getting old ! And I NEVER watched it & never will!!!! Don’t need tips on cooking recipes & how to make this and that….BORING!!!! NO THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hate the Talk. Just another bunch of women yelling over each other trying to be heard. And they have nothing to say. Too sad.

DITTO!

Our stories over these kind of shows any day…

‘General Hospital’s’ Steve Burton Shares Reaction to His Lead Actor Daytime Emmy Nomination, ‘It Was to Honor Leslie Charleson’

The 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Award nominations kicked-off on Monday with the announcements of four major categories including, Outstanding Lead Performer in a Daytime Drama Series — Actor, and among the nominees is General Hospital’s Steve Burton (Jason Morgan).

Burton is already a two-time Daytime Emmy winner in the Supporting Actor category for his roles as GH’s Jason and his turn as Dylan McAvoy on Y&R. However, Steve is yet to win in the Lead Actor category and he has received 11 nominations along the way in his daytime career.

Following the reveal that he is a 2026 Daytime Emmy nominee, he and his GH co-star, podcast co-host and comedy show partner, Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) taped a special edition of their That’s Awesome podcast just featuring Burton’s reaction to the news.

FOR LESLIE CHARLESON

Steve expressed, “I know it’s such a cliche to say, ‘I’m just so honored to be nominated.’ But truly, I’m so grateful to be nominated, so grateful to just be on the show off and on for 30 plus years and to be nominated with the guys in my category. Just to get the opportunity. Frank (Valentini, executive producer, GH) texted me right away. I was just like, ‘Thank you for the opportunity to get to do what I do.'”

Taking in the moment, Burton thanked those who helped him select the material for his nominated reel. “Unless you win, you don’t get to say things. So. I’m going just say a few things: Elizabeth Korte (co-head writer, GH) helped me a lot with the material, (as did) Michelle Henry, who’s a producer on the show, Laura Wright (Carly, GH), and then my wife Michelle (Lundstrom). I believe it was Jill Phelps who told me that when A Martinez felt like he had a great show or great scenes, he would mark it down. So, when Emmy time comes, you have all the show numbers written down, and you don’t have to think about it, because that’s half the battle (finding the material).

Burton explained how meaningful this nomination is for him, because of playing the scenes of Jason losing Monica, and his closeness with the late, great Leslie Charleson.

“The nomination’s an amazing thing, and it’s beautiful, but really it’s to honor Leslie Charleson. A lot of my material was because of her, and how I started on the show as a Quartermaine, it just means a ton,” shared Burton. “Maurice Benard (Sonny, GH) has obviously has been instrumental, and I’ve said it from day one and I’ll shout it from the rooftops. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here, and to be working with the people that we work with is incredible.”

SHOULD JOHN OLIVER BE NAMED HOST OF THE DAYTIME EMMYS?

During the end of his conversation with Anderson, Steve suggested that the host of the Daytime Emmy should be Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver, who recently guest starred as the head of the WSB named Z on General Hospital, and is soon to show up on Days of Our Lives in a mystery role in August.

Thus far, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has not revealed their host for the upcoming ceremony to be held on October 30 in a venue to be named in Hollywood, California.

You can watch Steve sharing his reaction to receiving his 2026 Lead Actor Daytime Emmy nomination below on a special segment on the That’s Awesome podcast.

Now let us know, are you glad that Steve chose scenes surrounding Jason mourning the loss of the woman that raised him, Monica Quartermaine for his Emmy reel? What do you think of John Oliver as a suggestion to host the Daytime Emmys? Weigh-in via the comment section below.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN ON THE 16,000th Episode?

The 16,000th episode will feature Jason Morgan returning to the town of Port Charles, Anna and Valentin (James Patrick Stewart) reuniting, and a new surgeon, Dr. Tristan Roberts (Dean Geyer) joining the staff of ‘General Hospital.’

Stay tuned for the 53rd annual Daytime Emmy nominations tomorrow on Tuesday, July 14 to find out if GH will be going for gold in the category, once again.
