GH’s Maurice Benard and DAYS Kassie DePaiva Named “Power Performances of the Week”

Two daytime vets in two very opposing types of storylines delivered emotional and riveting work during their scenes.  First on General Hospital, Maurice Benard (Sonny) in yet another stellar knockout performance in the Alzheimer’s storyline; showed the anguish and pain of a son trying to come to terms with his father’s ultimate fate.

This week saw Sonny originally deciding to try to prolong Mike’s (Max Gail) life by having him placed on a feeding tube, but soon after seeing the fate of Yvonne, another Alzheimer’s patient, and a talk with Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), Sonny changed course, and did what’s best for Mike, not for himself, and decided to let his father die with dignity and with as least suffering as possible.

We don’t think there could have been a dry eye in the house when Sonny visited Mike’s hospital bedside, and told him that it’s OK for his dad to let go, and not have to stick around for him.  Max Gail, as per usual, was also so touching in these scenes.

Benard did not overplay a beat, and for anyone who has had a parent die of this dreadful disease, you could relate to what Sonny went through in the more than capable hands of this two-time Daytime Emmy winner.

Over on Days of our Lives, what a return for Kassie DePaiva in her role as Eve Donovan! This time, she has come back unhinged and at an emotional rock bottom, so much so that she had abducted Ben Weston (Rob Scott Wilson), had him taken to an abandoned warehouse, strapped him up, tortured him with an assist from Dr. Rolf’s protege, Vincent (Michael Teh), and came up with this twisted plot to have Ben turn back into the “necktie serial killer” and kill his bride, Ciara (Victoria Konefal).

Why, you say? Well, because Eve’s daughter, Paige was one of Ben’s victims and it has been eating Eve alive this whole time. She is a mama grieving for her daughter so deeply that she can’t understand why Paige is dead and he is left on earth to roam around free and find love and happiness… and we find out she was gutted when Ben got a last-minute reprieve when he was recently sentenced to death by lethal injection.

DePaiva played this arc of Eve’s story as a soapalicious villain, but when you really deconstruct it, Eve is just in so much pain… and all of that came through even in the darkest of scenes.  And … there is yet more to come!

Kudos to Maurice and Kassie for being named Michael Fairman TV’s “Power Performances of the Week”.

So, do you agree with our picks for Maurice and Kassie? What did you think of their work? Comment below.

Sonny’s performance was great and even moved an old Devil like me to the brink of tears. More to come, especially now with Jason’s life also in the balance. Not going to be a good month in the Corinthos household, I suspect.

The other sorry mess….. just reminds me how much I miss the REAL Eve Donovan. And how I want ReRon & his pets away from Days of Our Lives.

While Kassie (Eve) was pretty damn brilliant with her performance (but the story was so wacky, so wacky, just SO wacky), yet Kassie committed herself, however, I would have awarded GH’s Lisa LoCicero (Olivia) for her loss and frustration of Dante’s absence was really spot on, and without the need for all the theatricals that DAYS used for Eve’s scenes. Just my opinion. Maybe a tie between the two ladies?

Days is too scifi and far fetched..while i still watch i dont know if that will last…too many cast changes and wild stories is a bit too much…GH is a little better but i wish they have Nina find out nelle is her daughter once and for all!

Jimh– Hi 🙂
I know what the Big BOOM is–
Jason will be his old self, a Quartmain, again..
And he will stand-off against Valentin.
It will be Jason Q vs Valentine..
Being Sonny is a retired gansta Jason needs a new life..
So– be ready for the return of Jason Quartermain.
(((ahaa you heard it here first lol))

What in Hell’s name would be the point of Jason Q coming back now?

He’s way too old to finish medical school. Even teenage Jason in his ugly Xmas sweaters never showed much interest in the ELQ business world. So I’m not sure what Jason Quartermaine would even do for a living.

Maybe he could take a crash course in law school. Surely after more than a quarter century in the “coffee business” he’s gained a decent knowledge of the law. And with Alexis being disbarred yet again, Port Charles probably needs another lawyer?

I was wondering that as well. You are right ! hoping

because that would be a deal maker, God kick Michael to the curb. NEW NEW NEW

boring TWIST : Nina turning on Nelle in the courthouse. which blah blah blah humdrum… if Nelle loses baby to Michael… she’s outstayed her welcome.. why pin her on Nina ? Nina needs some happiness… her tryst with Jax , isn’t going to lead any where. Valentin mindset he will have his Nina… had it not been for how sexual these two are… i’ll wait too.

SURPRISE: I love that Dante is back… not excited by any means… He’s a good actor… screeching stomping in her pumps… perfectly made up face… momma smurph is enough to kill any and all interest. God Lulu and the ditzy chicks, Maxie…. nuff said. oh god , more peter for her. yum yum

i’m already a week behind… day two : had my eye roll turn off the tv.

as Jason… is asking Carly to be his power of attorney… should something any thing happen to him. WEVE SEEN THIS BEFORE… I forgot Carly has a best friend? no way. pull the plug any way.

if this steers toward Monica and the Q’s. wallah.. i don’t know about the trade off… does this mean more Sam or more Carly and Sonny. FIRE

We all know that Ron is a big fan of over the top and the absurd!

I have always wondered if Rom writes for his own amusement or to entertain the fans. DAYS is in a fragile state, so much care must be given.

Herbst was the true shining star in those scenes. Her subtleties in delivery brought out the best in Benard.

Well… anytime Elizabeth is on screen without Frodd, it’s always a good thing, of course.

Is Roger Howarth Contract ? talk about a waste of salary… that could be going to other better actors

@GH NEEDS to fire him…pronto… with Michael Easton that much close behind

now were talking

the two actors/characters that have the most stir AND heck love fest…

Mike and Liz
Mike and Dante

game over

I think you’re right, Steve–Herbst tends to bring out the best in just about everyone they put her on the screen with, and I’d say she stole the scene–but it was good to be reminded that Benard really can act when they give him material he engages with. I think we’ve all seen him do his Mr. Aging Mobster schtick so often now—and most of it has been (a) so badly written and (b)oh so boring—that it’s easy to forget how talented he is. Here, he really made me feel for Sonny, which is something I can’t say very often.

I can’t stomach the torture scenes on DAYS, so I’m not sure what the actors are doing. I know they’re very capable.
But at GH, I was moved by everyone’s performance in this story; especially Max Gail’s. He said so much without saying a word when “Sonny” told him it was okay to pass on if he wanted. He blew me away. Been there, done that. It was outstanding!

Becky is as always a breath of fresh air god bless her!

I had the misfortune of watching a few minutes of DOOL on Tuesday. It’s horrific. The acting is atrocious. Yikes.

Kassie did a wonderful job.To be honest though she scared me and my friend.I just wonder how she is going to feel if and when her daughter shows up alive.I have a feeling that is going to happen,PLease Days for once leave poor Ben alone.I like the guy I know what he did was wrong but he was sick not crazy.I know all about mental illness I have them myself.

Maurice, yes!! Coupled with Max, his performance was exceptionally amazing—-
Kassie’s performance? Debatable. —-did nothing for me.

Great work by Maurice Benard, but is anyone else finding it hard to empathize with Sonny having this profound pain about his elderly father dying when we have seen him pull out a gun and shoot someone across the table for looking at him the wrong way? I think it would be a great plot point to acknowledge Sonny’s hypocrisy, since he doesn’t think twice about the suffering families of the people he’s killed, including his own son Michael’s real father, AJ. I’m finding the focus on Sonny’s pain (without any insight about the irony) to be a hard sell.

Patrick Muldoon and Jennifer Taylor Cast as Mike Manning’s Conservative Parents on ‘The Bay’

The ever-expanding cast of the streaming soap opera, The Bay, has announced two new additions for its upcoming 9th season, including Days of our Lives favorite Patrick Muldoon (ex-Austin Reed). TV fans also know Patrick Muldoon from his role as Richard Hart on Melrose Place.

In story, The Bay will bring Caleb McKinnon’s parents into the mix. Caleb is played by Daytime Emmy-winner and Outstanding Supporting Actor nominee this year, Mike Manning.

According to Deadline, Muldoon, along with Jennifer Taylor (Two and a Half Men), will play Caleb’s ultra-conservative parents. When Caleb married Daniel Garrett (Eric Nelsen), they all but abandoned him.  The season looks to bring a major story for Manning and hopefully and eventually love and acceptance from Caleb’s parents.

The casting news doesn’t stop there. Rhonda Ross has been tapped to play Colleen Givens, the biological mother of Pete Garrett’s (Kristos Andrews) wife Vivian (Karrueche Tran) in the new season.

Coleen is brought into the mix when Pete searches for Colleen after Vivian becomes ill. In the backstory, Colleen is a jazz singer who gave Vivian up for adoption at birth. Now she may be Vivian’s only hope to stay alive.

The series is up for 5 Daytime Emmy nomination at the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards on June 7th including: Outstanding Drama Series, Writing,  Directing, A Martinez (Nard0) for Supporting Actor and the aforementioned Manning.
