AEW Grand Slam Australia took the place of AEW’s usual Saturday night fare, Collision, on TNT and HBO MAX on February 14, and this year emanated from Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena.

On the line were four different AEW championship belts, plus someone’s head of hair! The card and it’s presentation gave us the feels of a mini pay-per-view and made for an entertaining show.

Four stars who also hail from down under were a part of the card: Kyle Fletcher, who hails from Sydney, “Timeless” Toni Storm who grew up in the Gold Coast, and so too did Harley Cameron, plus the surprise appearance of Lena Kross, who hails from Perth, which made it all the more special for the hometown crowd. Let’s take a look at what went down in the six matches on the card below.

Jon Moxley vs. Konosuke Takeshita

Battle for the AEW Continental Championship

The match went the 20-minute time limit and because of it, did not have a decisive finish. Try as Takeshita might, when it seemed like he was going to capture the Continental title, Moxley was able to kick out and withstand the last-minute onslaught. The crowd saw the last five minutes as a true rollercoaster ride that could have gone either way, but the powers-that-be decided to keep the belt strapped to Moxley, because a title can’t change hands on a draw.

At the end of the match, Takeshita took down Moxley after the champ got in his face. Will there be another chapter to Moxley vs. Takeshita at AEW Revolution or has a Konosuke seen his last opportunity for this title blown? Stay tuned.  GRADE B

The Babes of Wrath (Harley Cameron and Willow Nightingale) vs MegaBad (“Megasus” Megan Bayne and Penelope Ford)

AEW Women’s Tag Team Championship

The crowd was firmly behind Cameron and Nightingale, and thanks to Harley making the pin on Ford, the celebration in the ring was a fan favorite of the night. However, out of nowhere, came the official AEW debut of Australia’s own Lena Cross who helped the “Megasus” and Ford beat down the champs.

Then, in a tense moment, which looked more like Ford was the odd woman out, Kross and Bayne stuck a pose to end the segment and teased their future alliance in the ring. GRADE B

“Hangman” Adam Page vs. Andrade El Idolo

Winner advances to a title shot against MJF at AEW Revolution in March.

With Andrade seemingly getting a real push since his return from WWE to AEW, and coming off a string of victories, El Idolo would face the former AEW champ, Hangman Adam Page in what was one of the best wrestling matches of ‘Grand Slam Australia.’

We all knew Andrade’s manager, Don Callis would try to interfere, but Hangman had his number, eventually he delivered Andrade’s low blow move on to the Mexican superstar and with his patented Buckshot Lariat secured the win. GRADE: B+

“Timeless” Toni Storm & Orange Cassidy vs Marina Shafir & Wheeler Yuta of the Death Riders

Mixed Tag Team Tornado Hair Match

What we loved about this match was that unlike WWE inter-gender matches in recent memory, the guys and the gals truly mixed it up here! Look no further than Wheeler Yuta hitting a piledriver on Toni Storm right in the audience. Luther, Storm’s valet, literally carried her up the ring ramp, leaving “Freshly Squeezed” Orange Cassidy to fend for himself against the onslaught by Shafir and Yuta.

However, Storm made a triumphant return just in time to save the day! The best part was Yuta was even trying to save his hair by making his partner, Shafir potentially take the pin.  In the end, the “Timeless” one hit a Storm Zero on Yuta for the victory.

That meant, Wheeler Yuta long locks that he has been growing out for years, where going to get cut and buzzed off. Even when he tried to run away, his own stable mate, Jon Moxley, forced him into the ring for the demeaning haircut. In fact, Mina Shirakawa got into the act, especially because Yuta previously cut off a lock of her hair.

Toni Storm and Orange Cassidy went to town on Yuta’s scalp rendering him half bald before the segment came to an end. One can assume on next week’s Dynamite or Collision, we will see what Wheeler looks like with a bald head for now. GRADE B+

Kyle Fletcher vs. Mark Briscoe

TNT Championship Ladder Match

In their seventh match-up, but this time on Kyle Fletcher’s turf, the two rivals went on it again, but this time with the TNT Championship belt hanging above them in the ring. All one needed to do to win the match was to climb a ladder and take it down! Much easier said than done as pro wrestling fans know.

This match, surprisingly of the six on the card, was the only one were the participants drew blood after busting their heads open on the edges of the ladders. It was undeniable that the crowd was behind Fletcher in this one, whether he was the heel or not.

Fletcher delivered another top-notch performance which goes right along with his Don Callis family moniker, “The Protostar,” although we think it’s time to rest Fletcher and Briscoe for a long time to come after 7 matches of it!  Grade: B

MJF vs. Brody King

AEW World Heavyweight Championship

King was able to come into the match with some interest, given that he beat MJF once to earn a title shot. Could he do it again? Although the match at times felt plodding because of King’s size and his “knee” injury, he wound up getting support at ringside from his tag partner, Bandido, who also has an ax to grind with Max.

Eventually, MJF delivered a Heatseeker and secured the pin. Without questions MJF’s in ring antics and how he plays to the crowd are pure perfection, especially when he screamed in fear or pain from a move from King, using his “Kangaroo” dropkick in Australia, or “hurting his arm” when attempting to clothesline King, all great comedy and in character. GRADE: B

As the night came to a close, “Hangman” Adam Page came down the ring ramp, contract in-hand, signed it, and threw it at MJF as the two went nose-to-nose as we know what’s next! Page vs MJF on March 15 at AEW Revolution from Los Angeles.

AEW GRAND SLAM AUSTRALIA OVERALL GRADE: B+

AEW Honors Ted Turner with 10-Bell Salute

Published

on

By

Ted Turner, the billionaire businessman, who turned a struggling Atlanta news station into a media empire with first 24-hour news channel, CNN, died on Wednesday, May 6 at the age of 87.  Turner died reportedly ‘surrounded by his family.”

However, Turner’s impact is felt far and wide with how he revolutionized cable television as we know. One such way is how Turner believed in professional wrestling, when other network executives didn’t. Turner, who helped launch TNT and TBS, and purchased World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in the late 1980s and gave it a primetime slot.

Through his leadership, the landscape of pro wrestling was changed forever, leading to the infamous Monday Night Wars” between the WWE and WCW with their flagship shows, Monday Night Nitro vs. Monday Night Raw. Since 2019, wrestling has been back on TNT and TBS in a big way with AEW’s Dynamite and AEW Collision.

TED TURNER BELIEVED IN PRO WRESTLING

Last night, All Elite Wrestling opened its broadcast with a tribute to Turner, which led to the 10-bell salute, which is given to someone from the world of professional wrestling had passed on.

AEW commentator Tony Schiavone said at the top of the special three-hour Dynamite and Collision episode. “Ted Turner believed in pro wrestling. He believed in you, the fans, and he believed that pro wrestling belonged on national television.” Schiavone who was also a commentator for WCW noted that it was because of Turner’s vision that pro wrestling found a home on TBS and later in the 90s with TNT, sharing, “Generations of fans around the world knew that we were destination viewing.”

Schavione recalled, “I knew that firsthand. I began in the studio in TBS in 1985. Decades later, because of the foundation that was laid by Ted Turner, we still survive today through the leadership of Tony Khan in AEW, through the leadership of Warner Discovery, wrestling still survives.”

STING RECALLS TED TURNER STANDING UP TO EXECS

Suddenly, in a special appearance, pro wrestling and WCW legend, Sting, came to the ring and addressed the crowd in Charleston, South Carolina and at home. “Can you imagine having an all-in billionaire who absolutely loved pro wrestling? I can’t believe what (Turner) did for us. He was completely committed to us, devoted to us in every conceivable way.”

Sting went on to tell the story of how Turner stood up to the executives at CNN Towers.  ‘We don’t know about this whole pro wrestling thing. I think it’s time to cut them off because we’re always in the red, Ted would share. “I’d look at all of them and say, you wrestlers just keep on doing what you’re doing because I got some deep pockets.’”

“There wouldn’t be a TNT title, there wouldn’t be a Sting. There wouldn’t be a Darby Allin. There wouldn’t be a Tony Schiavone here tonight. You wouldn’t be here tonight. So, thank you, once again, Ted,” Sting said as he concluded his comments. Moments later came the emotional ten-bell salute (you can watch it below)

Earlier on Wednesday, AEW president Tony Khan shared his own tribute on X, expressing, “It’s a very sad day in the world of television and certainly in the world of professional wrestling. The man who gave us this platform, the man who created TBS and TNT and so many great television channels and so many great concepts in the field of television, the late great Mr. Ted Turner has passed.”

So, what are your thoughts on the passing of Ted Turner? How without the billionaire’s love of pro wrestling, WCW and now AEW would not have had the platform they have to bring fans around the world the sports entertainment shows that they love? Comment below.
