AEW DYNASTY: FTR Turns Heel and Demolish Cope, The Young Bucks Return and Ruin Swerve Strickland’s Chance at the Title

On last night’s AEW Dynasty pay-per-view, two major story turns will be what is remembered when the fans left the arena in Philadelphia and to all pro wresting fans watching at home.

FTR, one of the all-time most decorated and beloved tag teams has reverted back to their old ways. After wrestling for the AEW Trios Championship alongside Cope (Adam Copeland, ex-Edge, WWE) against the “Death Riders” and current champs, Claudio Castagnoli, PAC & Wheeler Yuta, things took an ugly turn.

Cracks emerged during the match as teammates, Dax Harwood and Cope ran into each other. Later, Harwood was at the mercy of Wheeler Yuta, and lost the match. After the “Death Riders” celebrated their victory and cleared the ring, Harwood attacked Cope with a piledriver. Pretending to be odds with his tag partner, Cash Wheeler eventually revealed himself to be on the same side, by delivering two “Con-Chair-Tos” to the previously surgically repaired and vulnerable neck of Cope.

Eventually, after continuing to beat up a defenseless Cope, the former “R-rated Superstar” was going to be stretchered out, but Cash Wheeler poked fun at the gurney and Cope by putting the neck brace around his own neck and mocking the injury sustained by his former best friend. Next, the now former babyfaces went up the ring ramp towards the back as bonafide heels much to the chagrin and shock of the crowd.

Meanwhile, in the main event for the AEW World Heavyweight Championship between the champion Jon Moxley and the challenger, former champ, Swerve Strickland, the match was a heated confrontation that suddenly took a hard left. After the referee was knocked out, Hangman Adam Page came to the ring, and fans did not know whether his target was Moxley or Strickland.Hangman took out all three  of Moxley’s “Death Riders.” Next, “The Opps” ran down the ramp to fend off the “Death Riders” and get them to the back and out of the picture also ending Page’s run-in for the night leaving more questions than answers.

As the match in the ring continued, Strickland set Moxley up for the “Swerve Stomp.” However, the lights went out in the arena and before Swerve could make the cover for the pin, the lights came back on, and revealed that The Young Bucks were back and had Swerve in a predicament and took him out with the BTE Trigger. The referee eventually crawled into the ring and made the count as Moxley fell on top of Strickland to come out the victor and retain the championship.

Why were The Young Bucks back and how are they aligning themselves with the “Death Riders”? After all, the Bucks are EVPs of All Elite Wrestling and had been gone from TV for the last six months. The finish left too many open questions without some explanation as to why the ‘Bucks” attacked Strickland. On the surface, it would seem that the EVPs might have more to do with the “Death Riders” formation and success than they have let on from the very beginning.

In other standout matches: Will Opsreay defeated Kevin Knight to advance to the semi-finals of the Owen Hart Men’s tournament. The match was the best of the night for high flying action and intensity. Timeless Toni Storm defeated Megan Bayne to retain the AEW Women’s World Championship with her “Rocky-inspired” ring garb and so too of her valet, Luther. Adam Cole defeated Daniel Garcia to become the new TNT Champion and Kenny Omega defeated Speedball Mike Bailey and Ricochet to retain his AEW International Championship belt in a fatal three-way bout.

As always with AEW pay-per-views, fans were treated to fantastic in-ring action, coupled with some stunning story surprises while some confusion reigned. In the end, AEW Dynasty was another solid outing from the company as it continues on to May’s Double or Nothing pay-per-view. Grade B+

So, what did you think of FTR turning on Cope? Glad they are back to being full-fledged heels? What did you think about the Young Bucks return and the ending of the Moxley vs. Strickland AEW Heavyweight Championship match? Weigh-in below. But first, check out the aforementioned video highlights.

AEW Honors Ted Turner with 10-Bell Salute

Published

Ted Turner, the billionaire businessman, who turned a struggling Atlanta news station into a media empire with first 24-hour news channel, CNN, died on Wednesday, May 6 at the age of 87.  Turner died reportedly ‘surrounded by his family.”

However, Turner’s impact is felt far and wide with how he revolutionized cable television as we know. One such way is how Turner believed in professional wrestling, when other network executives didn’t. Turner, who helped launch TNT and TBS, and purchased World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in the late 1980s and gave it a primetime slot.

Through his leadership, the landscape of pro wrestling was changed forever, leading to the infamous Monday Night Wars” between the WWE and WCW with their flagship shows, Monday Night Nitro vs. Monday Night Raw. Since 2019, wrestling has been back on TNT and TBS in a big way with AEW’s Dynamite and AEW Collision.

TED TURNER BELIEVED IN PRO WRESTLING

Last night, All Elite Wrestling opened its broadcast with a tribute to Turner, which led to the 10-bell salute, which is given to someone from the world of professional wrestling had passed on.

AEW commentator Tony Schiavone said at the top of the special three-hour Dynamite and Collision episode. “Ted Turner believed in pro wrestling. He believed in you, the fans, and he believed that pro wrestling belonged on national television.” Schiavone who was also a commentator for WCW noted that it was because of Turner’s vision that pro wrestling found a home on TBS and later in the 90s with TNT, sharing, “Generations of fans around the world knew that we were destination viewing.”

Schavione recalled, “I knew that firsthand. I began in the studio in TBS in 1985. Decades later, because of the foundation that was laid by Ted Turner, we still survive today through the leadership of Tony Khan in AEW, through the leadership of Warner Discovery, wrestling still survives.”

STING RECALLS TED TURNER STANDING UP TO EXECS

Suddenly, in a special appearance, pro wrestling and WCW legend, Sting, came to the ring and addressed the crowd in Charleston, South Carolina and at home. “Can you imagine having an all-in billionaire who absolutely loved pro wrestling? I can’t believe what (Turner) did for us. He was completely committed to us, devoted to us in every conceivable way.”

Sting went on to tell the story of how Turner stood up to the executives at CNN Towers.  ‘We don’t know about this whole pro wrestling thing. I think it’s time to cut them off because we’re always in the red, Ted would share. “I’d look at all of them and say, you wrestlers just keep on doing what you’re doing because I got some deep pockets.’”

“There wouldn’t be a TNT title, there wouldn’t be a Sting. There wouldn’t be a Darby Allin. There wouldn’t be a Tony Schiavone here tonight. You wouldn’t be here tonight. So, thank you, once again, Ted,” Sting said as he concluded his comments. Moments later came the emotional ten-bell salute (you can watch it below)

Earlier on Wednesday, AEW president Tony Khan shared his own tribute on X, expressing, “It’s a very sad day in the world of television and certainly in the world of professional wrestling. The man who gave us this platform, the man who created TBS and TNT and so many great television channels and so many great concepts in the field of television, the late great Mr. Ted Turner has passed.”

So, what are your thoughts on the passing of Ted Turner? How without the billionaire’s love of pro wrestling, WCW and now AEW would not have had the platform they have to bring fans around the world the sports entertainment shows that they love? Comment below.
