DAYS and GH Alum Tyler Christopher Arrested for Public Intoxication

Photo: NBCUniversal

Daytime Emmy-winner, Tyler Christopher (ex-Nikolas, GH; ex-Stefan, DAYS) was arrested for public intoxication at the Burbank, California airport, this past Friday, on May 26th.

According to the Burbank PD and reports obtained by TMZ, Tyler was arrested after they found him asleep and on the ground at the American Airlines terminal.  The officers noted that Tyler displayed clear and objective signs of drinking.  They also reveal he was unable to care of himself.

Christopher, who remains a fan favorite as the former Nikolas Cassadine on GH and Stefan DiMera on DAYS has opened up and discussed his battle with alcoholism in the past.  Last year, he appeared on former GH co-star Maurice Benard’s You Tube series, State of Mind.

Tyler was released from police custody following his airport arrest, cited, and will need to appear in court at a later date.

Back in 2019, the popular actor was cited for two counts of misdemeanor public intoxication and landed in jail for two days, following an arrest in Indiana.

And people wonder why he can’t come back to GH!

SK has reached out to him he has been thru this I respect him he has not turned his back on Tyler he is a recovery alcoholic I think him for reaching out. Stand up guy if he has support he will make it I hope he does. I think this man has lost enough now climb back up the mountain.

Wishing Tyler gets the support he needs to get back to recovery. This incident shows it’s a never ending process.

Sadly, this should also confirm he’s not returning to GH now or in the next few years. Frank (and Mark T) need to find a strong leading man to take on Nikolas. With Genie’s upcoming summer break and a pending actor’s strike, we’re likely not going to see Nik on our screens until much later in the year.

Well shit…. there goes any chance of a real Nikolas return.

Sad… he was on “State of Mind” with Maurice Benard a few months back, and he really seemed to be doing well, which is one of the reasons I was hoping he would return as Nikolas, after they let the last guy go, and then (via the temp hire) made it clear they weren’t actually bothering to kill the character off again, thus expect a short absence.

Guess that’s not going to happen now. Say HELLo to cousin Molly in rehab.

Not “bothering” to kill off the character? I was so happy to hear they weren’t! I always loved “Nikolas” and was afraid they were going to; this current regime seems to have no problem killing off legacy characters.

I have much more compassion for Tyler than I do for Haley Pullos. She comes off like an entitled, self-absorbed brat. Tyler? He seems genuine; I truly hope he can get the help he needs. With so much going for him; looks, health, children he loves and a career he loved, it’s a shame that he just can’t beat this. Truly sad…

@Rebecca1 – I don’t know HP. You don’t know HP. “She comes off like an entitled, self-absorbed brat”? Is that from a quote that we don’t know is true about a $400 shirt? Most people deserve compassion. Hopefully you aren’t judged by strangers just like you’re judging HP.

@TVJeff; No. It comes from me reading her tweets and her IG and looking at the pics she posts. She’s all about herself; her looks. Each one is her vamping for the camera. Never a word about anything substantial. She sounds full of herself and superficial. At the height of covid with people lying on ventilators, she found the fact that a restaurant put an ingredient in her salad that she specifically asked them not to something she HAD to tweet about to the world AND name the place which could jeopardize their business. I can totally believe the $400 dollar shirt comment. I haven’t liked her in quite a while, and her portrayal of Molly reflects what seems to be Haley’s personality; entitled. If I never hear her nasal, whiny voice, again it’ll be too soon.

TV Jeff, it’s quite simple. Haley choose to get behind the wheel while drunk out of her mind. She went the wrong way on the freeway causing her victim to sustain severe multiple injuries. Drunken wrong way crashes have occurred in my area resulting in multiple fatalities. It’s quite serious. Tyler relapsed, it is common on the road to recovery. Tyler decided to sleep it off in the Airport-the only person he hurt, was himself. Even had the firemen on the scene of the accident had not reported that Hayley was quite combative whole shrilling about her $400.00 shirt, I’d be disappointed in her. These two cases are not remotely the same.

@Harry – yes you are right. I should have prefaced my comment by indicating that there was NO excuse for her to get behind the wheel and she should be punished to the fullest extent of the law for what she did.

Not sure Frank is as eager to kill legacy characters as you state. In his 11 years, legacy-wise, both AJ and Duke were resurrected and now both are dead-dead. Both had more to do with Carlivati’s mini-feuds. Edward died in real life, so that doesn’t count. Morgan’s body was never found, so eventually, he’ll probably be back (but Sonny has plenty other kids in town). And then there’s Luke. Geary retired and moved to Europe and is likely never to return. Could it have been a better story, yes, but it rallied the town against Victor. Of all those listed, AJ is the one that should still be around today.

Frank prevented Robin from being dead-dead and brought so many of the 80s era cast back from exile. Laura, Anna & Felicia on contract!

Other deaths including Connie, Sabrina, Julian, Franco, Brando and Britt were all non-legacy.

@OG Steve. I would think Frank has the final approval. But yes, as you said, Carlivati, then-head writer, brought back AJ which I was so excited about, and over the moon (lol, an expression I’ve never used) that he and Michael were FINALLY bonding. Then from what I read, Sean didn’t like the pickle relish script or the digs about his weight, and he and Carlivati had it out. And Carlivati killed AJ off. Asinine move with no regard for the fans. He jerked us around (not to mention Sean) and killed off not only a legacy character but an important character to so many in the story and many stories that could have been created. Now we’re left with Ned and Brook Lynn (both whom I adore) and a house of characters that shouldn’t be allowed in the Quartermaine house let alone be considered Quartermaines. These writers have killed everything that once was Quartermaine.

They also killed off Ryan, Franco, Victor, Julian, Jason. Now obviously Steve left due to the vax, and they probably wouldn’t recast the role again; either way he’s gone. And while Franco wasn’t a legacy character, he was popular enough. Killing off Victor was the wrong move (unless he pops up again with some miraculous soap rationale). With Helena, Mikos, Stavros, Stefan gone, who does that leave? Just Spencer until they bring Nikolas back. Still, they’ve killed off all the Cassadine villains.

Killing off Ryan? Why? They could have just committed him again and brought him out IF the show is still on down the line. But both legacy villains dead/dead.

I wouldn’t be killing off any legacy characters at this point. Many of the actors who played them have passed in real life; we just unfortunately lost Sonja (Epiphany) and Jackie (Bobbie). They shouldn’t touch any of the vets and their characters who are still with us…or they might as well rename the show and start anew. They killed some future generations of legacy families too: Oscar, Morgan, Kiki. Who they should kill off in my opinion is Monica. Her absence is too ridiculous to be explained away. Just have the character pass, or say she’s moved out of country, or recast. Point is? We’re losing vets. No need to hasten their exit especially when many of the actors are still here and want to work.

Monica is becoming the new Audrey. She’ll live on in offscreen land. You can’t recast someone who had the role for 45 years.

Totally forgot about Oscar. Still don’t consider the Jeromes legacy (due to that 20+ year gap in appearances. And, it still bugs me that boring dead Silas has 3 bio kids – more than Robert, Mac or Ned.

You’re right about Ryan – another resurrected character now dead-dead.

Jason will be back eventually. Based on the way they treated Billy Miller, no actor worth a grain of salt would take that role knowing Burton will some day return. I know they had to rush his departure, but sending the character to prison might’ve been a better solution.

And despite what we’ve said about legacy characters and how awful the murders of Emily and Georgie were, I think both you & I would be fine with Molly meeting an end. It would open up great story for Alexis and TJ. Don’t even have to find the body in case they want to revisit the role in the future.

I wouldn’t mind losing Molly in the least, unless her supposed temporary recast plays the character as someone I could miraculously like. (Her not being Haley Pullos would be a great start for me). Killing Molly though, would seem incredibly cruel to do to Alexis, who has seen the demise of her sister, Julian, Neal, and now the diagnosis of Gregory. (I won’t watch that story; GH has become beyond morbid. Brain tumors, teens dying, brain dead babies, leukemia, Huntingtons and now Gregory’s diagnosis? I guess “escapism” escapes these writers.)

Alexis has had her share of grief, so I’d rather she FINALLY find happiness instead of driving her back to the bottle due to grief upon grief. And don’t get me started with what they did to Lexi Ainsworth. I don’t for a second believe it was a “mutual decision.” I think they screwed her and now, just as it seems for the first time in ages that Kristina is getting a story, it goes to Kate Mansi, who looks to me close to Sam’s age (though I know in real life she’s closer to Lexi’s). I just don’t buy her as Kristina. But I digress…

I only suggested a possible recast of Monica (though that would be a REALLY hard sell) because they already chose to recast her temporarily twice. I don’t want a character that is forever “off-screen.” If not a recast, then kill her off or have her retire and move to Europe with Tracy… But this glaring absence like we’re not supposed to notice she’s never present, ESPECIALLY at memorials, births, weddings, Willow’s illness and now Tracy’s return, is an insult to the viewers intelligence. Just freaking address it.

NuDrew is vile. Cameron Mathison is a good actor and good-looking, but this is a complete rewrite of Drew. It was difficult enough to believe that Jason had a twin with Billy Miller, but I accepted that because I thought Billy was great in whichever role he had (not that I bought him as Jason for one second because he always had “Drew’s” personality; warm, calm, fair, non judgmental.) This “Drew” is all about Carly, back-stabbed Ned, punched him out. Can’t stand him. But my point is Oscar (another new sudden addition to the Q family at the time) would have at least been a future generation of this legacy family. So killing him off made no sense.

As for the Q’s? I can’t stand this motley crew that we’re now supposed to consider the Quartermaines. It’s ridiculous. Their in-family arguments have none of the fun and enjoyment of watching the original Qs go at it. This is just Olivia, Drew, Carly, Willow and Michael “Corinthos” bringing their already established pre-Quartermaine stories and personalities into the house. Drew OR Olivia being snarky and rude to Tracy made no sense. They don’t know her; they have no history with her. It just comes off to me as outsiders being rude to a mother-in-law and an aunt, and the writers trying to recreate the internal fights of the family. Sorry, but without the original members it doesn’t work. All they’ve done is bring Carly’s world into the Quartermaines: her son, her daughter-in-law, her bestie, and her boyfriend. Then Joss comes over, Dante comes to visit Olivia…most times the Quartermaine scenes should be titled: Find An Actual Quartermaine. They should bring back Dillon, Skye, Lila Rae, and resurrect AJ again. I don’t really care if he was dead/dead. I’d buy whatever soapy explanation they shoveled just to have him back.

Rebecca 1,
Been reading your Posts and agree with most of them ,especially Haley Pullos, that girl has some big ego, comes right through in her character as Molly. I won’t miss her either. The Quatermaine ” Hotel” you refer to is unbelievable plus the fact that Carly thought Olivia should kick Ned out of his own home. I’m one of the few that can’t stand Tracy, acting like she’s God’s gift to everyone. Joss is another one I wouldn’t mind getting rid of , shes turned into a real little bitch, everything Sonny’s done for her, how dare he fall in love with someone else, just toss him in jail. I don’t like Nina either but does Joss tell her mother who to be with? I agree about Monica, give her some respect and let her die peacefully in the home Alan gave her. I miss Jason, mainly because he was so much to so many people. I liked this Drew on AMC, and like him better with Sam, not Carley and there is one good reason to be glad Billy Miller is not here right now ,it would kill most of us to see him and Carley together. About Harrison, I keep hoping somehow he was misdiagnosed and Phin will save him.

Hi Violet :)..
Christopher should have had a talk with my g’ma…
I was 12yrs or so..my Uncle would come in drunk holding a bottle–G’ma took the broom and hit him up and down saying’
Don’t you bring your devil piss into my home….it will destroy you and all who love you…if your devil piss doesn’t kill you it will kill any decent life you could have- get it out of my home…That would have put the fear in Christopher ahaa haa!!

SuOOO,
Too bad more people didn’t have a grandma like yours. I just feel so bad for this guy. It’s not like he hasn’t tried to beat this ” devil piss” but it just doesn’t work.My heart just goes out to him.

Rebecca1
You bring up a good point about the amount of tragedy that Alexis has seen. Killing Molly would put Alexis more into the Monica zone.

Lexi said it was “mutually beneficial” not a mutual decision. Big difference in those words.

I’m fine with Drew (but not CMs interpretation of him) being a Q. Skye is in the same category as some of the interlopers.

Killing off AJ and Duke were two of the worst decisions made under the Valentini regime. I knew about the behind the scenes issues with Sean Kanan and “The Writer” (who can blame Sean for hating the Pickle Lila storyline, lol), but was there also something that went on with Ian Buchanan? I’ve never heard anything about that, and I’ve always been curious. Ian is a such a lovely man, he deserved so much better.

That one pisses me off to this day. A beloved legacy character like Duke Lavery should have never been killed off the way he was, to prop up the Julian/Carlos story. He should still be on the show today with the other vets that they do a reasonably decent job utilizing, Robert, Felicia, Lucy and the like. Anna and Duke deserved their happily ever after.

Dan, I agree but I have to put killing off Alan Quartermaine as one of the worst, if not the worst, decision of all time.

Harry
Letting Alan die ripped a portion of the show’s heart away. That, however, occurred under a previous Executive Producer. We were comparing what has happened in the 11 years Frank has been at the helm.

Dan
If I remember correctly, there were rumblings that Ian mentioned that the writers didn’t know what to do with Duke and putting him back in Sonny’s orbit was against his character’s growth.

Unless Finola was going to leave, killing Duke was sadly the only way for her character to grow. And yes, Ian is an incredibly nice man.

This breaks my heart. Addiction is such a horrible thing and recovery a never ending process. I wish Tyler all the very best.

Sorry to hear this but I’m glad it wasn’t worse. (Drunken car accident or a suicide.) Still praying for Tyler and his loved ones. As long as there is breath in his lungs, there is hope for better days ahead. Hang on Tyler. You are loved.

I feel so bad for Tyler I really thought he was doing okay praying for him

I had no idea he was bipolar I watched that YouTube thing with Maurice and he talked about his problems with alcohol he has a very serious problem. I hope he’s ok.im praying too I’ve always loved him on GH.

Yes the Bipolar exacerbates the problem with alcohol and the other way around too. Its such a shame because he has worked so hard and he pulled himself out of the abyss of drinking and living on the streets. I pray he regains the strength to fight his demons. He is a wonderful actor.I wish him the best and will keep him in my prayers. I hope he gets back on the road to recovery.

Poor baby he is so talented and handsome it’s very sad. BUT at least he didn’t drive drunk like that fool Hayley what’s her face.

Talented, handsome, and such a promising long term career whether with Days or GH. This man needs to get serious help before it is too late. GH must focus on a top notch actor for Nicholas. Needs chemistry with Ava for the re-cast to work. Don’t care for the previous Nicholas replacements.

this is sad to hear, only wishing him the best, I’m sure a lot of people have things to say, but I just feel sad for him and hope he can turn things around.

I’m so sorry to hear about this. After watching Tyler’s interview on Maurice Benard’s show, which was really a fantastic talk that people should go out of their way to watch, it really seemed like Tyler had finally gotten straightened out and his life back on track. I was so hoping there might even be a shot for him to return to his rightful place as Nikolas on GH. But obviously, a TV show doesn’t mean anything when you’re talking about something like this.

Alcoholism is a seemingly never ending battle, literally a daily, even hourly battle in some cases. I never ever judge anyone fighting alcoholism, because it’s an illness, plain and simple. I’ve had quite a few friends and family members go through it over the years. Some came out on the positive side and are doing well, others unfortunately lost the battle.

I wish nothing but the best for Tyler, and I hope he gets the help and support he needs to get back on the road to recovery, health and happiness.

GH could do a storyline on alcoholism. Or just too much alcohol. Ava comes to mind who ironically was married to the Nicolas character.

GH has covered that subject quite a lot over the years. AJ, Monica, Alexis. They hinted at it with Luke (and Sonny) but didn’t go all the way.

rose,
We have Alexis, an alcoholic and Finn , an addict period.

He won’t be coming back to GH. I guess a new Nik coming in the fall.

Its a shame, I thought he was doing better and would reappear on GH when Nick resurfaced. Moving forward, when Nicholas does reappear, there is only one replacement and he did it well before, Nick Stabile. BUT, who would really be great in that role is former Adam from Y&R, Michael Muhney. He is a great actor who needs a second chance. Lets not dig up the whole backstory about what he allegedly did. Eric Braeden did not like Michael and he was fired! Move on! Hollywood redeems actors all the time. Ask Alec Baldwin, Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr.

There’s little chance that Disney/ABC takes a chance on Muhney. With the negative publicity of Tyler & Haley, combined with back to back to back deaths of cast and crew, the show isn’t going to rock the boat in casting. Jason Shane Scott comes to mind as a possible Nu-Nik. Stabile, while having chemistry with West, is a bit too old to play Laura’s son permanently.

JSS isn’t a bad choice but he looks too old and evil. He reminds me of the problem I see with Cameron Matteson. I like him but he is not Drew. He is too old and doesn’t have a mysterious undertone.

Agreed that CM doesn’t have that mysterious undertone. I had high hopes when he first appeared on Cassadine Island, but his Hallmark personality returned once they paired him with LW. He actually has chemistry in his sporadic scenes with Kelly Monaco, more so than LW.

I’ll disagree that he’s too old. He’s less than a year older than Burton. As much as I liked Miller, he’s 10 years younger than Burton. The character’s plastic surgery can’t really make up that big a difference.

My husband is a recovering alcoholic. So I know how hard it is. I wish Tyler the very best.

Arianne Zucker Reveals Her Last Days of our Lives Airdate

Arianne Zucker, who is no longer on contract with Days of our Lives, and involved in a lawsuit against the show, took to her You Tube channel and in her latest episode, and offered up what she believes is her final airdate as Nicole Walker DiMera.

The actress expressed: “I was really appreciative of the amount of support that I have had since leaving Days of our Lives.” She then added,  “My last airdate, I think, it’s July 29th and we’ll see how things go after that.”

Zucker went on to say how she has continued to receive overwhelming support since suing her former employer, Corday Productions, with the allegations that former Co-EP Albert Alarr sexually harassed her and other females at the show, and that the production company entity did not respond sufficiently and adequately.

Photo: JPI

After lodging her complaints, Zucker said her agents received two notices that Corday Productions were reducing her pay before her character was ultimately written off.  Zucker’s contract expired in January and since DAYS tapes over six months ahead it brings her final airdate, which as of now, to the end of July. Zucker is suing for harassment, discrimination, retaliation, negligent hiring and supervision, and wrongful termination among other claims.

Previously, Corday Productions issued this statement on Zucker’s claims: “The allegations in Ms. Zucker’s lawsuit are without merit. Corday Productions, offered to renew Ms. Zucker’s contract including offering her a pay increase. Rejecting Ms. Zucker’s counteroffer does not constitute retaliation. Complaints about Mr. Alarr’s on-set behavior were promptly investigated. Corday Productions fully cooperated with the impartial investigation and subsequently terminated Mr. Alarr.”

On her You Tube channel, Arianne went on to thank everyone who came out to the east coast fan event last weekend that featured several DAYS stars. She expressed, “My whole goal is to really help people stand up for themselves.” Arianne also shared she thinks it’s important for people who have gone through trauma to help each other through it.

Photo: JPI

On DAYS, Nicole is still in the dark that Sloan (Jessica Serfaty) is raising her child, Jude, with Eric (Greg Vaughan), and Eric also doesn’t know that he is raising his biological son. Will Eric and Nicole reunite and will Nicole find out what Sloan, Melinda and Leo (Greg Rikaart) have been hiding for months, before she exits the show? Stay tuned. There has been on official confirmation from DAYS that July 29th is Zucker’s final airdate.

You can check out Ari’s latest episode from her You Tube Channel below.

Now let us know, do you think somehow DAYS and Arianne will work these out and she will somehow be back on the show? What do you think Nicole’s exit will look like? Do you think they will recast? Let us know in the comment section below.

DAYS and ‘Supernatural’ Alum Jensen Ackles Joins the Cast of Justin Hartley’s CBS Series ‘Tracker’

Look who’s joining Justin Hartley’s hit freshman drama, Tracker! None other than another soap alum, former Days of our Lives and Supernatural favorite Jensen Ackles.

In a reveal via Hartley’s Instagram on Thursday, Ackles is set to play Hartley’s on-screen brother on the CBS procedural drama. In Tracker, Colter Shaw is estranged from his brother, Russell, which has been a big part of the mystery of season one.

Ackles is best known for his long run as Dean Winchester in The CW’s Supernatural, a role he reprised in the prequel of the series The Winchesters. He also recently starred in ABC’s Big Sky as Sheriff Beau Arlen and in The Boys as Soldier Boy.

Jensen was the original Eric Brady on Days of our Lives, a role he played from 1997-2000, before departing for the world of primetime and film.  Eric was in love with Nicole played by Arianne Zucker. The part of Eric was recast with Greg Vaughan taking over the role in 2012.

Wally Kurth Talks on His DAYS Daytime Emmy Nomination, His Emotional Scenes, and Remembering John Aniston

During our 2023 year-end honors at Michael Fairman TV, we named Wally Kurth as our pick for Best Overall Performance by an Actor for his double-turn as both Ned Quartermaine on General Hospital and as Justin Kiriakis on Days of our Lives. So, it was absolutely no surprise to us that Wally landed a Daytime Emmy nomination for his riveting work as a grieving Justin in the Supporting Actor category for the upcoming 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards.

On DAYS, Justin had been put through the emotional wringer, of first, losing his beloved Uncle Vic, played by the late John Aniston, and then finding out that Victor was the supposed biological father to Justin’s son, Alex (Rob Scott Wilson). If you didn’t reach for the hankies during some of Kurth’s work in these scenes, we don’t know what will make you do so.

Michael Fairman TV caught up with Wally to get his reaction to his fourth Daytime Emmy nomination in the last six years. Kurth was nominated in the Supporting category in 2018, 2020 and now 2024 and Lead Actor in 2021.

In addition, Wally shares what scenes were on his nominated reel, how John Aniston impacted his work, how he has changed as an actor over the years with a new outlook, and being the only actor out there with two long-running roles on two long-running soaps, and much more. Here’s what Wally had to share below.

Congratulations on your well-deserved nomination. You decided to submit yourself this year for Emmy contention in both Lead Actor for GH and Supporting Actor at DAYS, correct?

WALLY: I did. I thought the DAYS reel was a little more dramatic, much more emotional. I had thought with the way the judging goes that it might be a little bit more, winnable, if you will. I enjoyed and was proud of my work at General Hospital, so it’s all good. I’m thrilled. It’s always nice to be nominated.

Photo: JPI

What scenes did you ultimately choose for your Supporting Actor reel?

WALLY: I started chronologically, as always, trying to tell a little bit of a story. I actually started with a scene where Justin has to tell Maggie (Suzanne Rogers) that Victor’s (the late John Aniston) plane went down and it was not found. Then, the scene with Bonnie (Judi Evans) where I sort of have to let it all out, and grieve the loss of this man who was practically Justin’s father, but it was his Uncle Vic. We have a little scene talking about Victor, and then there is a short snippet at the funeral where Justin eulogizes Victor. Next, we jump to scene where Justin discovers the letter where Angelica admits that indeed Victor is Alex’s father (Rob Scott Wilson). So then, Justin has to tell Alex, and then I also sort of grieve the fact that I’m no longer his father. Justin basically lost his son. It was very dramatic and very emotional. I was guessing the judges would be like, “Hey! Enough with the crying! Stop, you big baby!” But, they didn’t. They must have thought that it was convincing enough that it felt really truthful at how Justin was upset about these two unfortunate realizations.

Photo: JPI

You bring up a really good point. I talk to actors all the time about crying on Emmy reels. Sometimes, many feel it might put voters off. But obviously, this time it worked well for you!

WALLY:  What I liked about the crying scenes was that, like in real life, you’re not crying all the time when something bad is happening, right? I think crying happens and it takes you off guard. It happens without you realizing it. These were all moments when Justin was alone, really. Bonnie comes in the room where Justin is just kind of like dealing with it. And then her coming in, opens up Justin and she is there to hold him. I think that often happens in real life. I thought that was correct for the writers to do that, you know, that Justin would break down when he was alone.

Photo: JPI

Did you feel the pressure of wanting to get these scenes when Victor died and at his memorial, just right due to the enormity to it, and to do justice for John Aniston?

WALLY: I allowed myself to use my heartbreak over John Aniston. I loved him. I just sort of allowed his presence for me in the scenes. It was sweet. It was good for me. I’m just thinking about it now and I feel teary-eyed. John was such a sweet man. He led by example, and he really did teach me how to be a professional actor, and he was a mentor. He never told me anything specific, but he was just John, and in the scenes, this was the time for me tell him how I feel.

Photo: JPI

Then, you had the heartbreaking scenes with Rob Scott Wilson where Justin tells Alex he is not his father!

WALLY:  I thought that was just really challenging material. As I get older, I just trust the material, and don’t get ahead of myself. I trust myself with the emotion. Just let it happen if it happens. When I first read it, I kind of imagined what it could look like and then you just let it unfold from there.

You’ve got Robert Gossett (Marshall, GH), A Martinez (Nardo, The Bay), Mike Manning (Caleb, The Bay), and Bryton James (Devon, Y&R) all in your category. Robert has won two Daytime Emmys in a row, last year for Supporting Actor and the year before for Guest Performer.

WALLY:  l love Robert. I worked with the character Marshall on General Hospital, and we had so much fun. He’s a great guy and a really good actor. A Martinez is the best guy ever. I have such admiration for him. Whenever I see him, we always really connect and to be in included with him is great. Bryton James, I don’t know, but I know he beat me in this category in 2020. Mike Manning, I didn’t get the opportunity to know when he was at DAYS as he weren’t in scenes together, but I hear good things about him, too.

Photo: JPI

When you are judging Emmy reels, what do you look for when you’re voting on a performance?

WALLY: That’s a really great question. And because let’s face it, there’s just a lot of terrific talent in daytime. This year, I judged two categories. I don’t just go with, “Okay, who’s crying the most.” I really try to go with the one who’s touches me the most, who surprises me and moves me. And so, if you go with that, you’re probably going in the right direction. I also think that upfront you do need to kind of give them something in the first couple minutes that shows you know what you’re doing and don’t make it too repetitive.

Who did you first tell you were nominated?

WALLY: My manager, Michael Bruno called me. I was in Chicago with my daughters having a late breakfast and I knew the nominations were going to happen around 11 am Chicago time. I didn’t tell my daughters about what was happening, just in case, I didn’t get nominated. So, when Michael called, I went, “Oh, boy!” I told my daughters who were sitting at the table with me. So, they were the first two people that I could tell, and that was really nice.  We had champagne which was really funny because I bought three little glasses of champagne, and as soon as I bought it, we toasted. They said, “We don’t really like champagne.” So, I ended up drinking all three glasses. (Laughs)

Photo: JPI

What do you think of Eric Martsolf (Brady), your Day Players Band member, and DAYS co-star getting a Lead Actor nomination?

WALLY: I remember, I was like talking to him and I was like, “Eric, are you going to submit yourself?” And he is like, “I don’t know. I don’t really have anything …” And the next thing you know, he’s nominated. I’m like, “Wow! I guess he found something!” (Laughs) I love Eric. I have such respect for him and his gift, and he works really hard. So, I was very happy for him. I’m glad we weren’t in the same category, however.

How many years now have you been playing Justin on DAYS?

WALLY: I started here 37 years ago in 1987. I was there for four years and then I left. Then, 18 years later, Ken Corday (EP, DAYS) invited me back in 2009 and I’ve been on the show now for 15 years. So, I guess a total of 20 years on and off over the last 37 years. Everyone remembers 1987-1991 … those were big, big years for Justin and Adrienne who back then were a supercouple.

Have you determined who you would thank in your acceptance speech if you win this year’s Supporting Actor Daytime Emmy?

WALLY: I feel like this year I kind of have an idea of what I would say. I think I can remember all of that without writing it down. If I had gotten nominated for both shows, I was definitely going to point out and thank the powers-that-be for giving me dual citizenship and how much I appreciate that. I do think that being on both soaps, I will go to my grave believing that it’s made me a better actor. In fact, since I’ve been doing both shows, I’ve been nominated for Daytime Emmys. I’ve become a better actor. I feel like maybe it’s just that I’ve gotten older and wiser, but I feel as though when I go in there to work, I’m really focused and I’m really prepared. I know I pretty much get one shot to get it. We’re in the business of “one takes” now in the soaps.

People are so lucky to even have one enduring role in their careers, but you’ve been able to have two, and they’re completely separate characters on two legacy shows; one which just turned 61, General Hospital, and the other Days of our Lives which will soon celebrate 60 years, as well.

WALLY: I didn’t plan on it. I must have done something right. Back in 2009, Ken called me up and invited me back to DAYS. I really jumped in. I’d been out of work for four or five years. I went back with a whole new attitude about the work, about the genre.  In 2004, when I left General Hospital, I was kind of burnt out. Looking back on it, I didn’t have a good attitude and I was just done. I was kind of tired. New writers come in and sometimes, when you have new writers that look at your character differently, it can be very difficult, because you just know that their passion is not with your character. However, in this case, I’m like, “I’m going to take whatever the writers give me and do the best I can and do my job. Let the writers do their job.” I think the writers also know that I really respect them and I’m not going to complain. I’m not going to tell them what to do and I’m going to stay out of it. They have enough to work out. They have enough to do. I’m going to be the problem solver, not the problem creator. There are enough problem creators. Believe me when I tell you that every time I leave those sets, I’m like, “Thank you. I love it.  See you the next time I see you.” I know how lucky I am to do both shows and to have this opportunity to act at my age and still be sent scripts. I love the art of acting. I’d do it for free. The fact that they’re paying me and I am able to do this and work with these great, wonderful, talented actors every day, it’s kind of mind-blowing.
