Pride Month: Memorable LGBT Characters Through the Years – Photo Gallery

June is Pride month around the world and in major cities in the U.S.

For the soaps; daytime and primetime, over the years, we’ve seen an evolution from having no LGBT characters, to more inclusion and representation of the gay community on your favorite shows. However, there is still far more representation that is clearly needed.

While several daytime and primetime dramas have given us coming out stories, love stories, same-sex weddings, and more, some have anchored their characters into the core drama of their respective shows, but others have tread lightly.

Check out our gallery below of these moving and memorable characters played by actors who made them come to life that have represented the rainbow flag, and some clunkers that flatlined along the way.

GL’s Olivia (Crystal Chappell) and Natalia (Jessica Leccia) became a soap sensation known as “Otalia.”

GH’s Lucas (Ryan Carnes) came out to his family, and fell for conniving, but lovable, Brad Cooper (Parry Shen).

OLTL’s Billy Douglas (a young Ryan Phillippe seen her with a young Chris McKenna) represented the first teen coming out story on the soaps.

Dynasty’s Steven Carrington (James MacKay) and Sammy Jo (Rafael de La Fuente) tied the knot in the season finale of the CW reboot.

Who can forget when Adam Newman (Michael Muhney) apparently had sex with openly gay legal eagle, Rafe! And where is Rafe, anyway?

People were invested in love story of Oliver Fish (Scott Evans) and Kyle Lewis (Brett Claywell), but all of a sudden "Kish" were gone from Llanview.

Matt Fielding (Doug Savant) was the openly gay character on Melrose Place. The show focused on his problems in the workplace, etc. The scene where Matt kissed a man was cut.

DAYS, Sonny (Freddie Smith), followed by Will (Chandler Massey), and then Paul (Christopher Sean) have given us emotional and riveting drama whether you're Team WilSon PaulSon, or Horita.

Unfortunately, the AMC Zarf (Jeffrey Carlson) storyline just didn’t work for many. Rock star, Zarf was transitioning to Zoe while falling for Bianca.

ATWT’s Nuke! Jake Silberman (Noah) and Van Hansis (Luke) were the “It” couple from Oakdale. Hansis’ touching performances stand the test of time.

The Pristina fan base has been vocal to bring back their gals, and the love story of GH’s Kristina (Lexi Ainsworth) and Parker (Ashley Jones).

Hamptons socialite and bestie to Emily, Nolan Ross (Gabriel Mann), had his own style on "Revenge".

Before Y&R and "This Is Us", Justin Hartley played Victoria Grayson’s gay son on "Revenge".

Who can forget the AMC same-sex wedding of Bianca (Eden Riegel) and Reese (Tamara Braun)? Problem is the writers wrecked it, by having that kiss between Zach and Reese!

Eden Riegel and Elizabeth Hendrickson appeared on AMC as lovers Bianca and Frankie, and then as Bianca and Maggie. Bianca's coming out story was an Agnes Nixon classic.

The law student with an intriguing personal life, Connor Walsh (Jack Falahee) on "How to Get Away with Murder".

ATWT controversial love story as Luke (Hansis) fell in love with Dr. Reid Oliver (Eric Sheffer Stevens). Tragically, Reid was killed, leaving Luke alone in the series finale.

OLTL’s in the closet lawyer, Daniel Colson, became a murderer to retain his secret.

Jamal Lyon (Jussie Smollett, in scene with Rafael de La Fuente) has struggled with his father’s acceptance, but is determined to live life his way.

GH’s Nurse Felix Du Bois (Marc Anthony Samuel) has never landed the man of his dreams. Will he sometime soon?

Billy Crystal became a household name as the gay Jodie Dallas on the 80’s sitcom, "Soap".

In 1988, ATWT’s fashion designer from NYC, Hank (Brian Starcher) came out as gay to Iva (Lisa Brown). This was a big step forward at the time, and then his story was aborted.

Now openly gay, Joanna Johnson came back to B&B as Karen Spencer, who had a partner, Dani, played by Crystal Chappell.

Kevin Keller (Casey Cott) is the Archie comic books first openly gay character, and is now in story on CW’s Riverdale.

Sexy bellhop Derrick (Spencer Neville) caught the eye of the other gay men in Salem on DAYS.

DAYS conniving Leo (Greg Rikaart) is playing havoc with Sonny’s life right now.

AMC’s Devon (Tricia McFadden) found herself drawn to lesbian Lynn Carson (Donna Pescow).

Y&R’s Mariah (Camryn Grimes) found herself in love with another woman, Tessa (Cait Fairbanks).

AMC’s Michael Delaney (Chris Bruno) was a high school teacher who came out to his students. Sadly, he got fired after that.

Thom Bierdz returned to Y&R in his role of Phillip Chancellor III, but this time Phillip was gay. Story fizzled. Phillip is nowhere to be found.

B&B’s Maya Avant (Karla Mosley) revealed she was a transgender woman in an epic and important storyline for our time.

On B&B, Scott Turner Schofield played Maya’s trans friend, Nick. B&B was inclusive featuring trans models: Isis King, Carmen Carerra in a fashion show.

Nashville's country and western singer, Will Lexington has struggled with coming out and more, played with great depth by Chris Carmack.

Crystal Chappell took the fan base for "Otalia" and created "Venice" which reunited her on-screen with Jessica Leccia. This time they played star-crossed lovers Gina and Ani.

They were all special and riveting in their own way but they couldn’t hold a Candle to the UK when it comes to Same Sex Love. The First Same Sex Kiss took place on a UK Soap called Brookside where Beth fell in love with fellow classmate Margaret and almost had an affair with her Professor. On Emmerdale Zoe Tate got Married in a Blessing to her Girlfriend Emma Nightingale. Things didn’t work out, but Zoe was quite the “Playa” who had a diversified set of Girlfriends. Eastenders had the first gay kiss on a UK soap in 1987, between Michael Cashman’s Colin and Gary Hailes’ Barry. Brooksides’s first lesbian kiss was in 1994 (apparently that was the first pre-watershed, ie. daytime, gay kiss in UK soaps).

My favorite characters have been Bianca and Reese. Bette and Tina. Kat and Adena. Vivian and Aster. Willow, Tara and Kennedy. Dana and Lara. And of course, Parker and Kristina. Who unfortunately, are still stuck off-screen in Oregon. General Hospital really, really needs to bring them back. It’s been way too long and we miss them terribly.

Favorite lesbian character is Bianca Montgomery (who sadly never had a single well written romance during her entire run).

I had no idea there were so many gay characters on soaps (or I clearly have forgotten some of them). It’s not to the point of oversaturation, however. For the record, more people know someone who is gay than they do someone who is a mob boss! So the relatable factor is built in. B&B’s 36th Anniversary Party (Photos)

Last week, the cast of The Bold and the Beautiful celebrated their 36th anniversary milestone with a get-together at La Piazza in Los Angeles.

The Bold and the Beautiful debuted on March 23rd, 1987 and is the sister soap to The Young and the Restless who is celebrating their 50th anniversary just three days later on March 26th.

Y&R’s 50th Anniversary Party (Photos)

It was a night to remember and quite the spectacular event, when CBS, Sony Pictures Televisions, and The Young and the Restless, celebrated in style the iconic soap opera’s 50th anniversary.

Over the weekend on Friday, March 17th, cast, crew, colleagues, families, and the press gathered to salute the series at the The Vibiana, a beautiful venue in downtown Los Angeles that used to be a cathedral now turned event space.

After many of the stars in attendance walked the red carpet and conducted interviews with the press, the crowd gathered inside for a very special presentation featuring several speakers, and emceed by Peter Bergman (Jack Abbott).

During the speeches, none was more touching than when Lauralee Bell (Christine, Y&R) was joined by her brother Bradley P. Bell (executive producer and head writer of B&B) and in remarks, honored their late parents William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell, the creators of The Young and the Restless.

CBS Entertainment President, Amy Reisenbach, Sony’s Steve Kent, and Y&R’s legendary stars, Eric Braeden (Victor) and Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) also spoke and shared their thoughts on this milestone and more.

General Hospital 60th Anniversary Cast Photo Revealed

Valentine’s Day marked the highly-anticipated unveiling of General Hospital 60th anniversary cast photo. While the photo is sprawling, it included all the current cast members and the returning Jane Elliot (Tracy Quartermaine) dressed to the nines.

As previously reported plans for the series milestone include a special episodes to air on Wednesday, March 29, honoring the late Sonya Eddy, who played Epiphany Johnson on the series starting in 2006.

Then, the Nurses Ball returns starting the week of April 3rd. This marks the first time the Nurses’ Ball has aired since 2020. The festivities will then continue as icons of Port Charles unite to stop a legendary threat from the past.
